Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Sources of the First Ten Books of Augustine's De Civitate Dei: A Thesis Presented to the Faculty of Princeton University for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy The following treatise - the work of three happy years - was not at first intended as a thesis for a doctor's degree, but has been converted from its original purpose. It was started in the first place at the suggestion of Professor A. F. West, and it is due to his personal encouragement that it has been completed. I wish to offer him my sincere thanks for having read through all my work in Ms, for calling my attention to some things I had overlooked, and for the help derived from his own Ms notes. Thanks are also due to Professors Winansand Westcott for suggestions; also to Dr. E. C. Richardson, Librarian of Princeton University, and to Rev. J. H, Dulles, Librarian of Princeton Theological Seminary, for having procured for me so many books I wished to consult. This book was released on 2009 with total page 161 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Book V of The City of God is of particular importance for Augustine's philosophy of history. In accounting for the prodigious growth and continuance of the Roman Empire, he dismisses secular theories of chance and fate in favour of the universal sway of divine Providence. In achieving this end, God has exploited the Roman virtues, and Christians are urged to emulate them. Both pagan and Christian leaders have contributed to Roman greatness. The book concludes with eulogies of the Christian leaders Constantine and Theodosius." --Book Jacket.

Download or read book Augustine: de Civitate Dei the City of God Book X written by Saint Augustine (of Hippo) and published by Aris and Phillips Classical Te. This book was released on 2014 with total page 155 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This edition of St Augustine's City of God is the only one in English to provide a text and translation as well as a detailed commentary of this most influential document in the history of western Christianity. In these books, written in the aftermath of the sack of Rome in AD 410 by the Goths, Augustine replies to the pagans, who attributed the fall of Rome to the Christian religion and its prohibition of the worship of the pagan gods. Following on from Book IX, this book discusses the issue of demons and their role in Platonism as being partly identical with the lesser gods. Having previously argued that in order to achieve the blessed life, we must worship one true God alone, Augustine now continues his discussion using the celebrated Neoplatonist Porphyry as his main source. Whilst applauding aspects of Porphyry's views, Augustine's main concern is to deliver his message that the sole path to blessedness after death is acknowledgement of the Incarnation and Christ as Mediator. Increasingly concerned with promoting the Christian message, Augustine cites the Bible frequently in book X. Latin text with facing-page translation, introduction and commentary.
