Book excerpt: "Book V of The City of God is of particular importance for Augustine's philosophy of history. In accounting for the prodigious growth and continuance of the Roman Empire, he dismisses secular theories of chance and fate in favour of the universal sway of divine Providence. In achieving this end, God has exploited the Roman virtues, and Christians are urged to emulate them. Both pagan and Christian leaders have contributed to Roman greatness. The book concludes with eulogies of the Christian leaders Constantine and Theodosius." --Book Jacket.

This book was released on 2014 with total page 155 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This edition of St Augustine's City of God is the only one in English to provide a text and translation as well as a detailed commentary of this most influential document in the history of western Christianity. In these books, written in the aftermath of the sack of Rome in AD 410 by the Goths, Augustine replies to the pagans, who attributed the fall of Rome to the Christian religion and its prohibition of the worship of the pagan gods. Following on from Book IX, this book discusses the issue of demons and their role in Platonism as being partly identical with the lesser gods. Having previously argued that in order to achieve the blessed life, we must worship one true God alone, Augustine now continues his discussion using the celebrated Neoplatonist Porphyry as his main source. Whilst applauding aspects of Porphyry's views, Augustine's main concern is to deliver his message that the sole path to blessedness after death is acknowledgement of the Incarnation and Christ as Mediator. Increasingly concerned with promoting the Christian message, Augustine cites the Bible frequently in book X. Latin text with facing-page translation, introduction and commentary.

Book excerpt: This work includes reference to studies on Augustine's De civitate Dei published from 1960-1990 in the United States and Canada. All critical studies that treat De civitate Dei in some substantial way are included. The text provides detailed annotations that indicate how each work contributes to a fuller understanding and interpretation of Augustine's most famous text. The work also has two sections which supplement the main bibliography. The first of these is an annotated list of selected important studies published in English by foreign publishers. The second includes selected important works published prior to 1960. The significant increase in studies on Augustine's De civitate Dei has generated a strong need for a comprehensive and annotated bibliography of recent scholarly studies devoted to Augustine's highly influential work. This book fills that need.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The ruling elite in ancient Rome sought to eradicate even the memory of their deceased opponents through a process now known as damnatio memoriae. These formal and traditional practices included removing the person's name and image from public monuments and inscriptions, making it illegal to speak of him, and forbidding funeral observances and mourning. Paradoxically, however, while these practices dishonored the person's memory, they did not destroy it. Indeed, a later turn of events could restore the offender not only to public favor but also to re-inclusion in the public record. This book examines the process of purge and rehabilitation of memory in the person of Virius Nicomachus Flavianus (?-394). Charles Hedrick describes how Flavian was condemned for participating in the rebellion against the Christian emperor Theodosius the Great -- and then restored to the public record a generation later as members of the newly Christianized senatorial class sought to reconcile their pagan past and Christian present. By selectively remembering and forgetting the actions of Flavian, Hedrick argues, the Roman elite honored their ancestors while participating in profound social, cultural, and religious change. Hedrick's interpretation sheds new light on the transition from antiquity to the middle ages. It also illuminates political repression in the twentieth century with specific comparisons between ancient and modern practices of the eradication of memory.
