Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Sources of Archbishop Parker's Collection of Mss at Corpus Christi College, Cambridge: With a Reprint of the Catalogue of Thomas Markaunt's Libarary Historians, palaeographers, and archaeologists, will all agree that it is very important to determine the places in which ancient books were written or preserved. If we can trace the career of a manuscript from the scriptorium where it took shape to the library shelf on which it rests to-day, we may find that its history will throw light on the most unexpected matters. It may shew us the origin of a school of handwriting: it may explain the genesis of a type of text: or it may account for the presence of a particular element in the works of a famous writer. Some of the notable results gained by study of the history of individual manuscripts will appear as I proceed. They are probably sufficient to justify the rash attempt I have made to determine the original homes of the books comprising that famous collection, the Parker Mss. at Corpus Christi College. I say that my attempt is rash, because it is not to be expected that any one person should be capable of seizing upon and rightly appreciating all the indications which are significant and might be made to yield the information we seek. Still, it so happens that a very considerable proportion of the books in Archbishop Parker's collection can be assigned to their ancient homes with certainty, or with great probability; and, for the rest, I have noted such indications as may in the future enable myself, or other searchers in the same field, to fill up the gaps I have been forced to leave. James (1862-1936) is probably best remembered as a writer of chilling ghost stories, but he was an outstanding scholar of medieval literature and palaeography, who served both as Provost of King's College, Cambridge, and as Director of the Fitzwilliam Museum, and many of his stories reflect his academic background. His detailed descriptive catalogues of manuscripts owned by colleges, cathedrals and museums are still of value to scholars today. In this ground-breaking book, first published in 1899, James analysed 482 manuscripts in the renowned Parker Collection at Cambridge for evidence of their provenance. James argued that by discovering what books were owned by individual English monasteries in the middle ages, historians could better understand medieval English intellectual life. He established the origin of nearly 200 of the books, and the results of his investigations (one volume, for example, belonged to Thomas Becket) still make fascinating reading today.

Book Synopsis The King's Hall Within the University of Cambridge in the Later Middle Ages by : Alan B. Cobban

This book was released on 2007-01-11 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A detailed study of the King's Hall, Cambridge, from its foundation in the early fourteenth century until its dissolution in 1546. It is based largely on the 26 extant volumes of the King's Hall accounts which form one of the most remarkable sequences of medieval collegiate records in Europe. The rich profusion of the material has made it possible to reconstruct the economic, constitutional and business organisation of a medieval academic society, thereby providing for the college that same kind of exhaustive treatment which has been lavished upon other categories of medieval institutions. Dr Cobban discusses the vital contribution made by the King's Hall to the evolution of the University of Cambridge and shows how the interpretation of medieval Cambridge history has to be considerably modified. He demonstrates the important formative influence of the King's Hall in shaping the course of English collegiate development and the ways in which this College was finely attuned to the new educational trends of the age.

This book was released on 2008-07-28 with total page 465 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Greenfield and Robinson state in their preface that they have sought to include every book, monograph, article, note, and review published on Old English literature since the invention of printing. They have come as close to doing so as two descendants of Adam possibly can, undeterred by the trouble at Babel. (By my count, thirty different languages are represented in the bibliography, sixteen of them frequently.) Rarely has any bibliography in any other discipline equalled the thoroughness and accuracy of this one. It is a contribution for which Greenfield and Robinson will long receive from their colleagues that measure of gratitude reserved for Old English scholarship's most bounteous treasure-givers."--Carl T. Berkhout"What astonishes is how well [Greenfield and Robinson] have succeeded in what they set out to do, how uniformly excellent their volume is in all its profusion of information and detail. . . . The Bibliography will bring scholars that peculiar joy in complex intellectual work done well that only they know; it will be immensely useful, virtually indispensable--if not a vade mecum because of its size . . . then at least an enchiridion with which they will fight their battles on behalf of Beowulf and Brunanburb and the Blickling Homilies."--The Old English Newsletter"[A] volume long needed, [the Bibliography] will now become an indispensable reference work for every student of Old English literature from the beginner to the acknowledged authority."--British Book News

Book Synopsis Through the Looking Glass: Byzantium through British Eyes by : Robin Cormack
Download or read book Through the Looking Glass: Byzantium through British Eyes written by Robin Cormack and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-12-05 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The papers in this volume derive from the 29th Spring Symposium of Byzantine Studies. This was held for the Society for the Promotion of Byzantine Studies in the University of London in March 1995, in order to complement the British Museum exhibition 'Byzantium. Treasures of Byzantine Art and Culture'. The objective of the symposium was to explore the ways in which British scholars, travellers, novelists, architects, churchmen and critics came into contact with Byzantium, and how they perceived what they saw. The present volume sets out some of the results of this enquiry. Byzantium is treated both as a source of influence on British culture as well as an 'idea' which British culture constructed in different ways in different periods of history. To give some comparative context, attention is also paid to attitudes towards Byzantium in continental Europe. Papers deal, amongst other topics, with the collecting of objects representative of Byzantine culture and with the changing appreciation of Byzantine manuscripts. They also include a series of case studies of individual historians and Byzantinists, and two deal in particular with Ruskin, who emerges as a perceptive 19th-century critic of Byzantine culture. Through the Looking Glass is volume 7 in the series published by Ashgate/Variorum on behalf of the Society for the Promotion of Byzantine Studies.
