I am convinced that it is only by a succession of visits at intervals that an unfamiliar country, of such marked and strong character as Spain possesses, can be comprehended; it is necessary to meditate over one's impressions at leisure, to start afresh, again and again, with some old prejudice re moved, and a clearer vision of the essential facts; during a single visit, however lengthy, this is difficult to effect. Book excerpt: This historic book may have numerous typos and missing text. Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1915 edition. Excerpt: ... Ill THE WOMEN OF SPAIN There are some countries, one is inclined to assert, peculiarly apt to produce fine men, others peculiarly apt to produce fine women. That this is so on the physical side all who are familiar with several countries have had occasion to observe. It is so also on the mental side. I have elsewhere pointed out, when investigating the genius of Great Britain, that while the men of Scotland have contributed more than their share to the sum of British intellectual achievement, and the men of Ireland less, as regards women the case is reversed, and the women of Ireland have contributed more than the women of Scotland.1 The Spaniards, if we take their history as a whole, have been a peculiarly virile people, yet at the present day one is tempted to think that the women of Spain are on the average superior to the men. In the past, the men of Spain have been distinguished by the most brilliant personal qualities. In the Spanish men of to-day, however, it is sometimes difficult to recognise the splendid and restless activities of their forefathers. It cannot be said that this must be set down to "degeneration," for then it would affect the feminine half of the race; but the women are full of energy and vigour even to advanced age; the Spaniards also are certainly a healthy people, and centenarians are by no means rare.1 1 Havelock Ellis, A Study of British Genius, p. 28. While the problem is somewhat complicated, we may perhaps appeal to selection for its explanation. Everything has happened that...

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Over the Pyrenees Into SpainThe Spanish nation is professedly devote; they forget while professing themselves Chris tians, that hospitality is especially inculcated by Christ, and Heaven itself held out as its reward I was a stranger, and ye took me in.' All, therefore, that this little volume can claim is to be a lively narrative of the scenes I passed through, and the people I met. If it meet from a discerning public as kind and generous a reception as its predecessor, I hope, ere long, to be once more a candidate for equal favour; and meanwhile, I meekly fold my arms, curtsey down to the very ground to the audience in pit and boxes, in grateful thanks for their favour, and hope the gods - i.e. The critics in the gallery - won't hiss me.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ballads and Songs of Spain Alhama, Baza, Jaen, Denia, Moclin, Salobrena - such are the names of a few of these sentinels of the stony Sierras, and more than one of them is known to have been garrisoned as early as the age Of Roderick the Goth - three hundred years, that is to say, before the Norman invasion of England. Yet, in dealing with Spain, it is by no means necessary to retrace the events of many centuries in order to reach an abundant source of inspira tion for the poet, and a point where history and romance will be found to have become perilously interwoven. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Toledo: The Story of an Old Spanish Capital Toledo, on its hillside, with the tawny half circle of the Tagus at its feet, has the colour, the roughness, the haughty poverty of the sierra on which it is built, and whose strong articulations from the very first produce an impression of energy and passion. It is less a town, a noisy a 'air yielding to the commodities of life, than a significant spot for the soul. Beneath a crude illumination, which gives to each line of its ruins a vigour, a clearness by which the least energetic characters acquire backbone, at the same time it is mysterious, with its cathedral springing towards the sky, its alcazars and palaces that only take sight from their invisible patios. Thus secret and in exible, in this harsh overheated land, Toledo appears like an image of exaltation in solitude, a cry in the desert.
