Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Soul of Denmark IN a world of book-makers, a visit to a country does not, as the World and his Wife seem to think, confer the right to the infliction of a new book upon a long-suffer ing people. If the Stranger within the Gates simply cannot refrain from utterance, he should at the outset state the reason, so as to give the reader, if he doesn't like it, a chance to burn the book - or the book-maker. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Poet's Bazaar, Vol. 1 of 3: From the Danish of Hans Christian Andersen The grandmother of our poet plays an important part in the history of his childhood. She had the care of the garden of the hospital; and here the intelligent boy, who was suscepti ble of the most vivid impressions, and who frequently spent entire days with the old lady, listened with heart and soul to the fables and ghost stories which were related to him by the inmates of the hospital, and had his mind filled with superstitious and religious images. It is told of him, that one day he went out with his mother and some other children to glean on a property, the steward of which was well known to be morose and ill-natured, and who per ceived them at their employment. The rest fled at his approach; he alone stood his ground, and with his childish, naive exclamation, How dare you beat me when God can see you? He softened the severe man, whose stick was already lifted against him. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: New York Times Bestseller Embrace Hygge (pronounced hoo-ga) and become happier with this definitive guide to the Danish philosophy of comfort, togetherness, and well-being. Why are Danes the happiest people in the world? The answer, says Meik Wiking, CEO of the Happiness Research Institute in Copenhagen, is Hygge. Loosely translated, Hygge—pronounced Hoo-ga—is a sense of comfort, togetherness, and well-being. "Hygge is about an atmosphere and an experience," Wiking explains. "It is about being with the people we love. A feeling of home. A feeling that we are safe." Hygge is the sensation you get when you’re cuddled up on a sofa, in cozy socks under a soft throw, during a storm. It’s that feeling when you’re sharing comfort food and easy conversation with loved ones at a candlelit table. It is the warmth of morning light shining just right on a crisp blue-sky day. The Little Book of Hygge introduces you to this cornerstone of Danish life, and offers advice and ideas on incorporating it into your own life, such as: Get comfy. Take a break. Be here now. Turn off the phones. Turn down the lights. Bring out the candles. Build relationships. Spend time with your tribe. Give yourself a break from the demands of healthy living. Cake is most definitely Hygge. Live life today, like there is no coffee tomorrow. From picking the right lighting to organizing a Hygge get-together to dressing hygge, Wiking shows you how to experience more joy and contentment the Danish way.

Book excerpt: This book shows how the people of Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania confronted a military superpower and achieved independence in the Baltic "Singing Revolution". When attacked by Soviet soldiers in public displays of violent force, singing Balts maintained faith in non-violent political action. As an inspiration to all nations, the non-violent Baltic independence movement revolutionised each country through singing and smiling. The "Singing Revolution" is indeed the essence of the Baltic way, and began in 1987 as a public revolt against Soviet restrictions on free speech and assembly. The revolutions and following elections in 1990 resulted in three separate governments and a declaration of independence from the Soviet Union. The book seeks to answer questions such as why the struggle for Baltic independence came to be called the Singing Revolution? What did they sing? And what role did singing play in the Estonian, Latvian, and Lithuanian campaigns of political mobilisation and non-violent action? Furthermore, and uniquely for this publication, it explores, in great depth, the songs that gave the revolution its name, translating and interpreting over 110 choral, rock, and folk songs in their poetic, cultural, and historical context.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from My Danish Sweetheart: The Romance of a Month The heavens were a dark, stooping, universal mass of vapor - swollen, moist, of a complexion rendered malignant beyond belief by a sort of greenish color that lay upon the face of it. It was tufted here and there into the true aspect of the electric tempest; in other parts, it was of a sulky, foggy thickness; and as it went down to the sea-line it wore, in numerous places, a plentiful, heavy, dark shading that caused the clouds upon which this darkness rested to look as though their heavy burden of thunder was weighing their overcharged breasts down to the very sip of the salt. They have been in far Africa, have drunk of the waters of the Nile, and rested on the pyramids. The inhabitants of the Sicilian coasts and of the promontory of Messina relate how, at a certain time every year, the storks come over the sea in great flocks to rest themselves on the slopes of the mountains, which are then wholly covered by these creatures. Suddenly they again arise, and wing their way toward the north, over the snow and clouds of the Alps, where the great multitude divides itself into smaller companies. The smallest knows, as well as the largest, how to direct itself toward the land where it has its home: and it is not the smallest band which flies toward little Denmark. Each one knows the bay 'whither he must direct his course, knows the clump of trees, and the white chimney on the indented gable of the hall, where the empty nest awaits him. Strange. Mystical bird Upon thy back rides spring into the land the forests become green, the grass grows more joyously, the air becomes warmer. Indeed, both Helga and I had agreed to drop the subject until an opportunity for our transference should arrive. We might, at all events, be very certain that he would not set us ashore in the Canary Islands; nor did I consider it politic to press him to land us there, for, waiving all consideration of other reasons which might induce him to detain us, it would have been unreasonable to entreat him to go out of his course to oblige us, who were without the means to repay him for his trouble and for loss of time. He withdrew to his cabin after dinner. Helga and I sat over his draughtboard for half an hour she then went below, and I, as I have already said, on deck, to smoke a pipe. This book was released on 2018-06-11 with total page 367 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From different perspectives this book studies the role of Reformation theology in the shaping of Danish society and the social dimensions of Lutheran confessional culture. The book develops an approach making it possible to draw strong conclusion about the social teaching of Luther and its impact on the development of the Danish society. It works on a conceptual level by analyzing the social dimensions of key Lutheran concepts and their translation into the doctrine of the three estates (church, household, and state), and on the level of lived experience of life within these three orders, not at least within the household forming the ideal form also for church and state. Thus the chapters in the book endeavor to connect the social ideas inherent in the Lutheran confession with the social formation of the Danish state from the Reformation into the period of Absolutism. A long mono-confessional situation within the Danish Monarchy makes it possible to study the impact of Lutheranism and the development of a confessional culture within a uniquely long timeframe. The focus is on basic mediums for the translation of Lutheran ideas into social practice: law, primarily connected to marriage and family; and the role of household, both as primary social relations and as basic social and political model. In this way the book offers important insights for theologians, historians, sociologists, and academically anyone interested in the relation between theology and sociality, confession and culture.
