Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hunting literature had its beginnings as early as the fourteenth century, when nobles hunted stag, bear, fox, and other game on horseback. As foxhunting grew in popularity, literary works that covered the sport flourished, as well. In Six Centuries of Foxhunting: An Annotated Bibliography, M. L. Biscotti has compiled all books produced in Great Britain and the United States that pertain to, or mention, foxhunting with hounds. Arranged alphabetically by author, more than 2000 titles are included. Each entry features details such as place and year of publication, publisher, book size, page count, illustrations, and binding. Nearly every title is also annotated with a description of the book’s contents, and biographical sketches are provided for the most notable authors. Narratives, histories, illustrated works, verse, fiction, and even anti-hunting literature all have their place in this volume. Six Centuries of Foxhunting also features more than thirty images of book covers and foxhunting illustrations. With appendixes that contain author, title, and illustrator time lines, and separate author and title indexes, this comprehensive bibliography is a valuable resource for researchers, book dealers and collectors, and foxhunters.

Book Synopsis The Canterbury Catch Club 1826 by : Chris Price
Download or read book The Canterbury Catch Club 1826 written by Chris Price and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2018-11-30 with total page 498 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1825, an enterprising Canterbury newsagent by the name of Henry Ward raised a subscription to commission a lasting tribute to his beloved musical society. The result was a fine lithograph showing 100 gentlemen in assured poses, carefully placed in surroundings eloquently freighted with classical allusion, cultural literacy, deep-rooted patriotism, and strictly masculine politics. That image is the subject of this book. With insights gleaned from a unique collection of music, papers, and artefacts in the archives of the city and the cathedral, this study considers not only the accomplished performance of bourgeois status which is clearly visible in the print, but other characteristics of the Club which are either less pictorially privileged or entirely omitted. Deploying iconographical, cultural, and musicological analysis, the book discusses this curiously contradictory slice of British social history in which the respectable apparently coexisted happily with the libertine. What emerges is an unusually clear view of the production, performance and consumption of music in a provincial city at a fascinating time: a period when cultural activity was a strategic assertion of socio-political identity.
Book Synopsis Berit Olam: The Song of Songs by : Dianne Bergant
Download or read book Berit Olam: The Song of Songs written by Dianne Bergant and published by Liturgical Press. This book was released on 2023-06-10 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Among all of the books of the First Testament, the Song of Songs is one of the most intriguing. On the one hand, its unabashed sensuality has captured the imagination and has endeared it to those who appreciate passionate human love. On the other hand, more demure readers have frequently been chagrined by their own fascination with its erotic character and have cloaked their interest under the guise of metaphorical reading. Both interpretations of the Song of Songs have been endorsed. Down through the ages, both Jewish and Christian interpreters have delighted in the exquisite imagery of the book's songs, but they have also frequently reverted to allegory in their interpretations. This commentary views the Song as a collection of love poems and carefully examines features of Hebrew poetry in order to uncover the delicacy of their expression. It is unique not only in the attention that it gives to the obvious feminine perspective of the poems but in their ecosensitive character. Although it is a tribute to mutual love, the principal frame of reference is the amorous disposition of the woman. Her words open and close the Song and her voice is dominant throughout. The imagery that the lovers use is drawn from nature. Whether it is the woman in awe of the strength and splendor of her lover or the man glorifying her physical charms, the descriptions all call on elements from the natural world to characterize the feature being described. Whatever they experience or know or even desire is somehow rooted in the natural world. Chapters are Superscription," "Mutual Yearning (1:2-2:7)," "An Opportunity Lost, Then Found (2:8-3:5)," "Ravished By Beauty (3:6-5:1)," "One of a Kind (5:2-6:3)," "The Admiration of all over (6:4-8:4)," and "Love Affirmed (8:5-8:14)."
