The qualitative features of the solution are the same as those found by previous investigators using integral methods, in that an otherwise arbitrary initial condition (the local free stream Mach number) is determined by the fact that only a particular value results in a physically meaningful solution. Book excerpt: Numerical solutions of the laminar, incompressible boundary-layer equations are presented for flows involving separation and reattachment. Regular solutions are obtained with an inverse approach in which either the displacement thickness or the skin friction is specified; the pressure is deduced from the solution. A vorticity--stream-function formulation of the boundary-layer equations is used to eliminate the unknown pressure. Solutions of the resulting finite-difference equations, in which the flow direction is taken into account, are obtained by several global iteration schemes which are stable and have unconditional diagonal dominance. Results are compared with Klineberg and Steger's separated boundary-layer calculations, and with Briley's solution of the Navier-Stokes equations for a separated region. In addition, an approximate technique is presented in which the streamwise convection of vorticity is set equal to zero in the reversed flow region; such a technique results in a quick forward-marching procedure for separated flows.

The plate is infinitely thin and is aligned parallel to a uniform stream. The Reynolds number based on plate length is assumed large enough to allow the formation of boundary layers on the sides of the plate. The upstream influence of the trailing-edge disturbance necessitates solving the complete Navier-Stokes equations in the trailing-edge region. The aim of the investigation is to calculate an improved first approximation to the solution in this region for large values of the Reynolds number. The elliptic equations define a boundary-value problem. A finite-difference solution to equations which closely approximate the Navier-Stokes equations is obtained in a rectangular region which includes the trailing edge. A relaxation-type procedure is used. Weighted differences, which combine backward and central differences in equal proportion, are introduced to provide the upstream influence in the scheme. The nonlinear partial differential equations are replaced by linear difference equations and iteration is used until the solutions converge. Solutions are obtained for Reynolds numbers larger than 100,000. A complete description of the flow field is provided in the rectangle and downstream wake except in a very small region surrounding the trailing edge. (Author).

The fully developed turbulent region is treated by replacing the Reynolds stress terms with an eddy viscosity model. The mean properties of the transitional boundary layer are calculated by multiplying the eddy viscosity by an intermittency function based on the statistical production and growth of the turbulent spots. A specifiable turbulent Prandtl number relates the turbulent flux of heat to the eddy viscosity. A three-point implicit finite-difference scheme is used to solve the system of equations. The momentum and energy equations are solved simultaneously without iteration. Numerous test cases are compared with experimental data for supersonic and hypersonic flows; these cases include flows with both favorable and mildly unfavorable pressure gradient histories, mass flux at the wall, and traverse curvature.
