Book excerpt: "Part teen drama, part horror story... Readers will want to finish in one sitting." —Kirkus Reviews A music fest goes wrong in Lorence Alison's comic YA thriller Solstice as selfie-mad concert-goers wake up to realize their tropical island fantasy is a deadly nightmare. When Adri is offered an all-expenses-paid trip to the exclusive Solstice Festival, she throws caution, her prestigious summer internship, and her parents goodwill to the wind. She just wants to live a little before the first day of the rest of her life, planned and scheduled in accordance with her parents’ law school dreams. But when she and a horde of affluent, entitled teen partiers arrive at the island paradise, it looks nothing like the luxury vacation they were promised. There’s barely any food, nowhere to stay, and not nearly enough porta-potties. Pretty soon, the festival is trending on social media for all the wrong reasons, and the music acts are cancelling left and right. And then the first dead body washes up on the beach. Adri has a front-row seat as everything devolves into chaos—and she's in a prime position to put together the clues to who—or what—is killing off the helpless attendees. But even if she finds the killer, how can she hope to stop them? Check your privilege at the door—before it gets you killed. This is one vacation you can’t escape. An Imprint Book "Topical, tropical—and terrifying! A fast-paced read that will have you on the edge of your seat." —Caleb Roehrig, author of Death Prefers Blondes

Book excerpt: Another festive edition to the Tales of the Weird series, following on from Spirits of the Season and Chill Tidings. A unique selection ranging from the spooky haunted houses of Victorian Christmastime to experimental twentieth-century horrors. It offers a truly international scope of stories, from the pine forests of Canada to the peaks of the Alps. Like any other boy I expected ghost stories at Christmas, that was the time for them. What I had not expected, and now feared, was that such things should actually become real. Strange things happen on the dark wintry nights of December. Welcome to a new collection of haunting Christmas tales, ranging from traditional Victorian chillers to weird and uncanny episodes by twentieth-century horror masters including Daphne du Maurier and Robert Aickman. Lurking in the blizzard are menacing cat spirits, vengeful trees, malignant forces on the mountainside and a skater skirting the line between the mortal and spiritual realms. Wrap up warm - and prepare for the longest nights of all.

Book excerpt: From lucky last meals to kissing flags, rituals and superstition have always been a special tradition for the United States space program and its members. However, the spread of a rumored Native American curse on the nation's premier launch site was a first for the industry. Space Launch Complex- 6 (SLC-6), on what is now Vandenberg Space Force base in Lompoc, California, was constructed in 1966 to be the most sophisticated launch complex in the world, but, despite robust government funding, found itself plagued with over four decades of mission cancellations, collapses, floods, fires, and deaths. Amongst airmen, a rumor emerged that SLC-6 had been built atop of a Native American burial site belonging to the local Chumash tribe and thus began a contentious relationship between the future of America's space program and indigenous spirituality. Following from the initial construction of the launch facility to the declaration of a US government official that the site had been hexed, this thesis deconstructs how the rumored "Curse of SLC-6" reflects a larger and inherent tension between the perceptions of Native American identity and the visions of what a prosperous America looks like. This thesis analyzes significant historical points during the mid-late twentieth century including the fear of Soviet Espionage, the rise of the American Indian Movement, and the revival of the Mystic Native Trope in an attempt to understand the socio-political environment of Lompoc that allowed this rumor to flourish. Utilizing local newspapers, private Vandenberg archives, and exclusive interviews with base officials and Chumash elders, this research uncovers never before known information that upsets decades of misreporting on this conflict. Ultimately, this research concludes how the development of the US space program is inherently tied to the concept of national imperialism and is designed as an antithesis to indigenous communities.

Book excerpt: If the made-for-television movie has long been regarded as a poor stepchild of the film industry, then telefilm horror has been the most uncelebrated offspring of all. Considered unworthy of critical attention, scary movies made for television have received little notice over the years. Yet millions of fans grew up watching them--especially during the 1970s--and remember them fondly. This exhaustive survey addresses the lack of critical attention by evaluating such films on their own merits. Covering nearly 150 made-for-TV fright movies from the 1970s, the book includes credits, a plot synopsis, and critical commentary for each. From the well-remembered Don't Be Afraid of the Dark to the better-forgotten Look What's Happened to Rosemary's Baby, it's a trustworthy and entertaining guide to the golden age of the televised horror movie.
