Book excerpt: Dom Combe presents the reader a sharply focused profile of a dedicated and extraordinary woman of the 20th century, Henry James'sister-in-law, independent in spirit and passionately devoted for more than 60 years to the cause of Gregorian Chant and its liturgical implementation. Drawing on her voluminous correspondence, he traces the main events of her life following her conversion in 1904 to the Catholic Church. From these letters emerges the clear image of a fiercely strong-willed and gracious woman who pursued her ideals with relentless zeal.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is essential for anyone who wishes to learn Gregorian Chant. Few words are necessary to introduce the present work to English speaking students of plainsong. Such a handbook has long been needed and is sure of its welcome. Neither the well known Stan brook Grammar of Plainsong nor Madame Ward's valuable school courses cover so much ground as Dom Gregory Sunol in his Spanish "Metoda”. The book first appeared in 1905, prefaced by a commendatory letter from Dom Andre Mocquereau, the famous director of the Solesmes School. Its author has many years of teaching experience behind him, as well as sound theoretical knowledge of his subject. His work has proved its popularity and practical usefulness by going through a number of editions in the original Spanish, besides being translated into French and German. Indeed by compressing the Solesmes teaching within the narrow limits of a general text book Dom Sunol has rendered good service to the Gregorian cause. Not everyone has access to the monumental publications of Solesmes, the Monographies gregoriennes or the Paleographie Musicale, and countless students will be glad to find the subject matter of this latter work, especially the important seventh volume on Gregorian Rhythm, here summed up and analysed, while the extensive quotations from Dom Mocquereau's Nombre Musical gregorien, with which the Spanish author has enriched his later editions, will make them desirous of seeing this fascinating synthesis of the whole subject brought out in English. The French translation of Dom Suf'lol's work was made by Dom Maur Sablayrolles who tells us in his preface that he inserted a few additional chapters and altered and developed his original here and there in inconsiderable ways, always with the author's permission. The present English version is a faithful rendering of the sixth French edition, and except for some extension of the note on Latin pronunciation, now embodied in the text, nothing of any importance has been added. But the work has been prepared under the direct supervision of the Solesmes Benedictine Fathers at Quarr Abbey who have supplied invaluable help on almost every page, mainly in the direction of ensuring greater accuracy, clearing up obscure· passages, simplifying technical points and generally making the book more accessible to the ordinary student of plainsong. The Spanish handbook was placed under the patronage of our Lady of Montserrat. In its English dress it is offered to our Lady of Quarr with the prayer that she may everywhere bless the work of those who are teaching the Catholic world to sing the praises of her Divine Son.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gregorian chant, the Catholic Church's very own music, is proper to the Roman liturgy, but during the course of its long history it has experienced periods of ascendancy and decline. A century ago, Pope Pius X called for a restoration of the sacred melodies, and the result was the Vatican Edition. This book presents for the first time in English the fully documented history of the Gregorian chant restoration. The original French edition was published by the Abbey of Solesmes in 1969.This book describes in careful, vivid detail the strenuous efforts of personalities like Dom Joseph Pothier, Dom Andre Mocquereau, Fr. Angelo de Santi, and Peter Wagner to carry out the wishes of the pope. The attentive reader will not fail to note that many of the questions so fervidly debated long ago are still current and topical today. Robert A. Skeris' introduction to this edition illuminates the current discussion with documentation, including the Preface to the Vatican Gradual and the Last Will and Testament written by Dom Eugene Cardine.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Complete and Practical Method of the Solesmes Plain Chant The end kept in view while compiling this "Method of Plain Chant" was to put into the hands of clergymen, organists, and choirmasters a book of practical instructions on Plain Chant in as concise a form as consistent with clearness and completeness. The history of Plain Chant is omitted, as well as rubrical precepts which may be learned from the official liturgical books, as Missale, Vesperale, etc. On the other hand, we have striven to unveil the art anc beauty of Gregorian melodies, convinced that the love and employment of these venerable and magnificent Chants will only return with their proper comprehension. This endeavor may be traced in our treatment of the subject. We thought, for instance, that we could render no better service to Plain Chant than to place it upon the basis of the universal laws of art, and laws of musical art in particular. By pointing out the presence and dominion of the supreme laws of beauty and art in Gregorian melodies, they are proven to be art productions. The recognition of this fact will excite feeling and reverence - two things which are indispensable in the dignified and artistically correct rendering. Apart from its manner of treating the subject, this Method has nothing new to offer. It is based upon well-known Plain Chant hand-books by authorities such as Dom Pothier Kienle, Tinel, Wagner, Haberl, etc. Particular assistance was rendered us in our work by a book which appeared a few years ago in Italy, "Mctodo compilato di Canto Gregoriano (Ravegnani)," which, on account of its practical arrangement, has found in Italy a wide circulation. We have taken from this work many of our practical examples. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Musical notation has not always existed: in the West, musical traditions have often depended on transmission from mouth to ear, and ear to mouth. Although the Ancient Greeks had a form of musical notation, it was not passed on to the medieval Latin West. This comprehensive study investigates the breadth of use of musical notation in Carolingian Europe, including many examples previously unknown in studies of notation, to deliver a crucial foundational model for the understanding of later Western notations. An overview of the study of neumatic notations from the French monastic scholar Dom Jean Mabillon (1632–1707) up to the present day precedes an examination of the function and potential of writing in support of a musical practice which continued to depend on trained memory. Later chapters examine passages of notation to reveal those ways in which scripts were shaped by contemporary rationalizations of musical sound. Finally, the new scripts are situated in the cultural and social contexts in which they emerged.
