Book Synopsis Words of Cheer for Daily Life by : Charles H. Spurgeon
Download or read book Words of Cheer for Daily Life written by Charles H. Spurgeon and published by Curiosmith. This book was released on 2014-12-04 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Spurgeon points people to their faith in God for finding joy in life. Spurgeon said “I am the subject of depressions of spirit so fearful that I hope none of you ever get to such extremes of misery as I go to, but I always get back again by this—I know I trust Christ. I have no reliance but in him, and if he falls I shall fall with him, but if he does not, I shall not. Because he lives, I shall live also, and I spring to my legs again and fight with my depression of spirit and my melancholy, and get the victory through it. So may you, and so you must, for there is no other way of escaping from it. In your most depressed seasons you are to get joy and peace through believing.” The twenty-one chapters are excerpts of sermons that have to do with joy and hope in Christ. The text is updated to modern language.

Book Synopsis Sentimental Figures of Empire in Eighteenth-Century Britain and France by : Lynn Festa
Download or read book Sentimental Figures of Empire in Eighteenth-Century Britain and France written by Lynn Festa and published by JHU Press. This book was released on 2006-10-15 with total page 311 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this ambitious and original study, Lynn Festa examines how and why sentimental fiction became one of the primary ways of representing British and French relations with colonial populations in the eighteenth century. Drawing from novels, poetry, travel narratives, commerce manuals, and philosophical writings, Festa shows how sentimentality shaped communal and personal assertions of identity in an age of empire. Read in isolation, sentimental texts can be made to tell a simple story about the emergence of the modern psychological self. Placed in conversation with empire, however, sentimentality invites both psychological and cultural readings of the encounter between self and other. Sentimental texts, Festa claims, enabled readers to create powerful imagined relations to distant people. Yet these emotional bonds simultaneously threatened the boundaries between self and other, civilized and savage, colonizer and colonized. Festa argues that sentimental tropes and figures allowed readers to feel for others, while maintaining the particularity of the individual self. Sentimental identification thus operated as a form of differentiation as well as consolidation. Festa contends that global reach increasingly outstripped imaginative grasp during this era. Sentimentality became an important tool for writers on empire, allowing conquest to be portrayed as commerce and scenes of violence and exploitation to be converted into displays of benevolence and pity. Above all, sentimental texts used emotion as an important form of social and cultural distinction, as the attribution of sentience and feeling helped to define who would be recognized as human.
Book Synopsis Words of Warning (Annotated, Updated Edition) by : Charles H. Spurgeon
Download or read book Words of Warning (Annotated, Updated Edition) written by Charles H. Spurgeon and published by Aneko Press. This book was released on 2018-04-02 with total page 175 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: He that believes in the Son has eternal life, and he that does not obey the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God abides on him. (John 3:36) This book, Words of Warning, is an analysis of people and the gospel of Christ. Under inspiration of the Holy Spirit, Charles H. Spurgeon sheds light on the many ways people may refuse to come to Christ, but he also shines a brilliant light on how we can be saved. Unsaved or wavering individuals will be convicted, and if they allow it, they will be led to Christ. Sincere Christians will be happy and blessed as they consider the great salvation with which they have been saved. Whether or not we look to Jesus Christ for salvation is the single most important determination we must make during our lifetime. Countless books have been written addressing just about every imaginable self-help topic. Other books are written solely for entertainment. Some of these books are okay in their own right, but what good are they to the reader if he is lost in the end? Why do we spend so much time even with good things, but neglect the great? Not one thing we can do during our seventy or eighty years on earth amounts to anything if we are not in Christ. What we do for Christ is everlasting, and by claiming our salvation in Him, we have an exceedingly bright future.
