Book Synopsis Warfare in the Sokoto Caliphate by : Joseph P. Smaldone
Download or read book Warfare in the Sokoto Caliphate written by Joseph P. Smaldone and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2008-11-03 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The successful jihad of 1804 in Hausaland - perhaps the most important Islamic revolution in West African history, with consequences still apparent in Nigeria today - resulted in the establishment of the Sokoto Caliphate, the largest and most enduring West African polity in the nineteenth century. The book is a full length study of traditional Sudanic military history, and an authoritative analysis of warfare in its most prominent Islamic state. After a brief survey of the evolution of Sudanic warfare and military organisation before 1800, Dr Smaldone examines the historical development and sociological implications of the two important revolutions in military technology which occurred in the nineteenth century: the adoption of cavalry during the jihad period and the introduction of firearms in the latter half of the century. He argues that these two revolutions were causal factors in producing two structural transformations in the emirates of the Caliphate, first from relatively egalitarian combatant communities to feudal systems, and then to centralised bureaucratic state organisations.

Book Synopsis Shari'ah on Trial by : Sarah Eltantawi
Download or read book Shari'ah on Trial written by Sarah Eltantawi and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2017-03-28 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In November of 1999, Nigerians took to the streets demanding the re-implementation of shari'ah law in their country. Two years later, many Nigerians supported the death sentence by stoning of a peasant woman for alleged sexual misconduct. Public outcry in the West was met with assurances to the Western public: stoning is not a part of Islam; stoning happens "only in Africa"; reports of stoning are exaggerated by Western sensationalism. However, none of these statements are true. Shari'ah on Trial goes beyond journalistic headlines and liberal pieties to give a powerful account of how Northern Nigerians reached a point of such desperation that they demanded the return of the strictest possible shari'ah law. Sarah Eltantawi analyzes changing conceptions of Islamic theology and practice as well as Muslim and British interactions dating back to the colonial period to explain the resurgence of shari'ah, with implications for Muslim-majority countries around the world.
Book Synopsis A Geography of Jihad by : Stephanie Zehnle
Download or read book A Geography of Jihad written by Stephanie Zehnle and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2020-01-20 with total page 703 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book addresses the Jihad movement that created the largest African state of the 19th century: the Sokoto Caliphate, existing for 99 years from 1804 until its military defeat by European colonial troops in 1903. The author carves out the entanglements of jihadist ideology and warfare with geographical concepts at Africa’s periphery of the Islamic world: geographical knowledge about the boundary between the “Land of Islam” and the “Land of War”; the pre-colonial construction of “the Muslim” and “the unbeliever”; and the transfer of ideas between political elites and mobile actors (traders, pilgrims, slaves, soldiers), whose reports helped shape new definitions of the African frontier of Islam. Research for this book is based on the study of a very wide range of Arabic and West African (Hausa, Fulfulde) manuscripts. Their policies reveal the persistent reciprocity of jihadist warfare and territorial statehood, of Africa and the Middle East. Stephanie Zehnle is Assistant Professor (JProf) of Extra-European History at Kiel University (Christian-Albrechts-Universität). Her work on African and trans-continental history includes research on the history of Islam, human-animal relations, and comics in Africa.
Book Synopsis One Woman's Jihad by : Beverly Blow Mack
Download or read book One Woman's Jihad written by Beverly Blow Mack and published by Indiana University Press. This book was released on 2000 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a lively life and times of Nana Asma'u (1793-1864), a West African woman who was a Muslim scholar and poet. As the daughter of the spiritual and political leader of the Sokoto community, Asma'u was a role model and teacher for other Muslim women as well as a scholar of Islam and a key advisor to her father as he waged a jihad to convert the population of what is now present day northwestern Nigeria to Islam. Asma'u's literary legacy, consisting of 65 poems in Arabic, Fulfulde and Hausa, constitutes one of the largest existing collections of 19th-century material from the region. Her poetry has been transmitted - even forged - over the years and is familiar to Hausa Muslims today, attesting to the power and continued relevance of her convictions and achievements. One Woman's Jihad provides a fascinating glimpse into the West African Muslim community at a pivotal point in its history.
Book Synopsis Telling Stories, Making Histories by : Mary Wren Bivins
Download or read book Telling Stories, Making Histories written by Mary Wren Bivins and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2007-03-30 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Through reconstruction of oral testimony, folk stories and poetry, the true history of Hausa women and their reception of Islam's vision of Muslim in Western Africa have been uncovered. Mary Wren Bivins is the first author to locate and examine the oral texts of the 19th century Hausa women and challenge the written documentation of the Sokoto Caliphate. The personal narratives and folk stories reveal the importance of illiterate, non-elite women to the history of jihad and the assimilation of normative Islam in rural Hausaland. The captivating lives of the Hausa are captured, shedding light on their ordinary existence as wives, mothers, and providers for their family on the eve of European colonial conquest.
