OF THE SUPPOSED IDENTITY OF THE CAUSES GIVING RISE TO INDIVIDUAL AND NATIONAL WEALTH.1 PART I.--WHEN ASSUMED AS A SELF-EVIDENT TRUTH. PART U.--WHEN DEDUCED FROM AN INGENIOUS THEORY. PART I. When wealth, considered in the general, is conceived to be a thing either so clear as to require no definition, or so simple as to be fully grasped by any definition, two different and opposing systems naturally seem to arise concerning it. The wealth of all the individuals in a state being, it may be said, of necessity measured by the amount of the national 1 [The title of Rae's first "Book " in the original edition was " Individual and National Interests are not Identical." The idea accords with bis leading concept on the side of man's association with his fellow men, which is that the sociological principle of the "social and benevolent affections" takes precedence over the purely economic principle of individual profit. The social virtues of the individual, embodying the "instincts of society," maximise prosperity through stimulating all the fundamental productive forces, and further the real, long-run, economic interests of the individual as well as those of the society. On the other hand, it is certain that the direct, short-sighted attempts of individuals (actuated by " isolation of thought and feeling ") to increase their advantage, often miss their aim as regards the individual, and cause loss to the social body as a whole. (Compare Article V.) There is, therefore, always room for efforts of society to compel its delinquent members to observe their real, long-run interests. But the argument elaborated in this and the foregoing Article, --that organized civil society is itself called upon to play the part of entrepreneur and be...

Book excerpt: Foundations of Classical Sociological Theory: Functionalism, Conflict and Action provides an extensive analysis of classical sociological theory by giving readers an introduction to the life and ideas of all the eminent thinkers. The book begins by giving an overview of the emergence of sociology as a discipline in the background of socio-economic development that characterized Europe in 18th century. The first part of the book examines how the theorists viewed society as an organism; the second part takes cognizance of the conflict theory and third part deals with the emergence of action theory which took ambivalent position with regard to science and emphasized human agency and consciousness. Written in a very simple language, this book will help students delve deeper into the subject.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first handbook focussing on classical social theory. It offers extensive discussions of debates, arguments, and discussions in classical theory and how they have informed contemporary sociological theory. The book pushes against the conventional classical theory pedagogy, which often focused on single theorists and their contributions, and looks at isolating themes capturing the essence of the interest of classical theorists that seem to have relevance to modern research questions and theoretical traditions. This book presents new approaches to thinking about theory in relationship to sociological methods.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Combining theoretical approaches with practical applications, Rethinking Social Capital delineates the meaning, uses, and problems surrounding the concept of social capital. Carl Bankston, a leading scholar in the field, offers a fresh take on the topic, presenting an original way of understanding social capital as a process. The book provides key definitions of social capital, describing its functionality, the surrounding theoretical issues, and its relationship with social structure. Examining capital in its various forms, Bankston discusses the complications of defining social relationships in a financial resource analogy as investments in future outcomes, and proposes an alternative of an original structural model that approaches social capital as a process. Chapters then explore the major applications of social capital theory: to families, communities and education; to formal organizations and informal networks; to class, race, ethnicity and inequality; and to the nation-state. This cutting-edge book is invaluable in clarifying ambiguities surrounding the concept of social capital to students and scholars of the social sciences. Its practical applications will also prove useful to policy makers and public policy institutes.
