Book Synopsis Focality and Extension in Kinship by : Warren Shapiro
Download or read book Focality and Extension in Kinship written by Warren Shapiro and published by ANU Press. This book was released on 2018-04-20 with total page 429 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When we think of kinship, we usually think of ties between people based upon blood or marriage. But we also have other ways—nowadays called ‘performative’—of establishing kinship, or hinting at kinship: many Christians have, in addition to parents, godparents; members of a trade union may refer to each other as ‘brother’ or ‘sister’. Similar performative ties are even more common among the so-called ‘tribal’ peoples that anthropologists have studied and, especially in recent years, they have received considerable attention from scholars in this field. However, these scholars tend to argue that performative kinship in the Tribal World is semantically on a par with kinship established through procreation and marriage. Harold Scheffler, long-time Professor of Anthropology at Yale University, has argued, by contrast, that procreative ties are everywhere semantically central, i.e. focal, that they provide bases from which other kinship ties are extended. Most of the essays in this volume illustrate the validity of Scheffler’s position, though two contest it, and one exemplifies the soundness of a similarly universalistic stance in gender behaviour. This book will be of interest to everyone concerned with current controversy in kinship and gender studies, as well as those who would know what anthropologists have to say about human nature. “The study of kinship once ruled the discipline of anthropology, and Hal Scheffler was one of its magisterial figures. This volumes reminds us why. Scheffler’s powerful analyses of kinship systems often conflicted with the views of his more relativist contemporaries. He cut through the fog of theory to emphasise the human essentials, namely the importance of the social bonds rooted in motherhood and fatherhood. Anthropology in its decades-long retreat from the serious study of kinship has lost a great deal. This volume points the way to a restoration.” — Peter Wood, National Association of Scholars

Book Synopsis Worship and the Ceremonial Economy of a Royal South Indian Temple by : Anthony Good
Download or read book Worship and the Ceremonial Economy of a Royal South Indian Temple written by Anthony Good and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page 416 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The temple of the god Kalugacalamurtti - the local name for Murugan, Siva's younger son - is the largest economic enterprise in the town of Kalugumalai, South India, yet ostentatious display and devotionalism loom far larger in the conduct of its affairs than economic rationality, despite attempts at bureaucratic rationalism by successive governments. This book describes this Hindu temple's complex patterns of public liturgy and private worship, and explores the metaphysical themes which underlie them according to the Saiva Sidhhanta philosophy governing temple worship. It shows how temple rituals portray and enact the sexuality, kinship, and regality of the gods. It then recounts how temple economy and administration have changed over the past two centuries, how groups and interests within Kalugumalai town challenged the temple's hegemony over their affairs, and how and why the Rajas of Ettaiyapuram, the temple's hereditary Trustees, successfully resisted repeated government attempts to assume control of the temple over the past 50 years. There have relatively few previous ethnographic studies of large Hindu temples and no other field-worker has access to such detailed information
Book Synopsis An Anthropological Analysis of Local Politics and Patronage in a Pakistani Village by : Stephen M. Lyon
Download or read book An Anthropological Analysis of Local Politics and Patronage in a Pakistani Village written by Stephen M. Lyon and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Asymmetrical power relationships are found throughout Pakistan's Punjabi and Pukhtun communities. These relationships must be examined as manifestations of cultural continuity rather than as separate structures. The various cultures of Pakistan display certain common cultural features which suggest a re-examination of past analytical divisions of tribe and peasant societies. This book looks at the ways power is expressed, accumulated and maintained in three social contexts: kinship, caste, and political relationships. These are embedded within a collection of 'hybridising' cultures. Socialisation within kin groups provides the building blocks for Pakistani asymmetrical relationships, which may be understood as a form of patronage. As these social building blocks are transferred to non-kin contexts, the patron/client aspects are more easily identified and studied. State politics and religion are examined for the ways in which these patron/client roles are enacted on much larger scales but remain embedded within the cultural values underpinning those roles.
