Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Technology is an omnipresent part of everyday life, as are decisions about the ethical and safe use of technology. When we decide whether to enable location services on a new app, set up two-factor authentication for a new service, or consider taking a carbon-free transportation alternative to our destination, we are working to improve the social impacts of technology. Along with our own decisions as users, a myriad of other stakeholders--including designers, developers, policymakers, and investors--also impact the technologies that they contribute to or regulate. Accordingly, while many small, everyday decisions can improve technologies' social impact, on a broader level, it may seem difficult, overwhelming, or too complex to try to turn the tide of technology's impact on privacy rights, our climate and environment, or human behaviour. Efforts to create “tech for good,” regulatory initiatives, public education, ethical investing, and other social and technical tools might all appear to be small, separate efforts, even though they all aim toward the same larger goal.As such, while there are many highly specific guidelines, calls to action, and standards for improving technologies or practices, the field of ethical technology in Canada lacks a synthesis aimed at all parties, including the general public and the private and public sectors. Considering a vast array of technologies and topics (including artificial intelligence [AI], open data, labour and automation, and climate and environment) this paper identifies individuals and organizations working at the intersection of technology and social outcomes. Drawing from a series of in-depth interviews, it synthesizes shared considerations, challenges, frameworks, and best practices for improving the social impact of technology from a wide variety of perspectives.
Book Synopsis Information, Innovation and Impacts by : John de la Mothe
Download or read book Information, Innovation and Impacts written by John de la Mothe and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Information, Innovation and Impacts - a joint project between the Program of Research in International Management and Economy (PRIME) at the University of Ottawa and Statistics Canada - brings together economic, social and statistical views of the impacts of the innovative uses of information. It examines the costs as well as the benefits of rapidly expanding availability of data, of information, and of codified knowledge, and it provides suggestions for future work and research. This project fits into an on-going research program at Statistics Canada to develop indicators for science and technology (S&T) in a more coherent manner, and it fits into the research program of PRIME to better understand the dynamics of innovation in an information economy. Together, Statistics Canada and PRIME strive to tell the story of the activities in S&T systems, their interactions, and the outcomes as actors go about the generation, transmission, or mediation of knowledge, information, and of data, as part of the effective functioning of the system.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: No area of technology has developed faster or affected contemporary society more pervasively than electronic communications. Networked computers linked through the internet have enabled finance, commerce and manufacturing to function in a "virtual" environment, unconstrained by time and space. Boundaries have also been removed in voice, image, and data transmission, once normally provided through discrete media. Although the effects of these developments are large, their significance is far from clear. This collection of eleven original papers by British and Canadian experts examines a wide range of practical consequences of the current revolution in communications technology and reconsiders the actual depth of changes so far produced in the economy and society.
