Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Broadview Anthology of British Satire, 1660-1750 provides instructors and students with a thorough introduction to the highpoint of British literary satire. Reflecting current pedagogical practice and scholarship, the anthology presents works by thirty satirists, including eleven women. The contents are expansive: they include canonical, frequently taught texts, less anthologized works by major satirists, and works by writers who have been traditionally excluded from anthologies. Biographical headnotes, crisp footnotes, and carefully edited texts make the book suitable for use in both undergraduate and graduate classrooms. By turns raucous, piercing, acerbic, winking, vexatious, and sly, the satires in the anthology will provoke fresh, dynamic approaches to this crucial literary period.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Protagonists featured include: William Pitt; Henry Fox; the Duke of Newcastle; Lord Bute; George II and III; and Britain's ally Frederick II of Prussia. By placing literary works in a close political context they test the accuracy of the information conveyed against the correspondence and memoirs of politicians and parliamentary debates. The degree to which literature not only recorded, but also helped to shape political attitudes, is explored by its interaction with these and other expressions of opinion, such as popular protest and extra-parliamentary initiatives.

Book Synopsis The Oxford Handbook of Eighteenth-Century Satire by : Paddy Bullard
Download or read book The Oxford Handbook of Eighteenth-Century Satire written by Paddy Bullard and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2019-07-24 with total page 816 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Eighteenth century Britain thought of itself as a polite, sentimental, enlightened place, but often its literature belied this self-image. This was an age of satire, and the century's novels, poems, plays, and prints resound with mockery and laughter, with cruelty and wit. The street-level invective of Grub Street pamphleteers is full of satire, and the same accents of raillery echo through the high scepticism of the period's philosophers and poets, many of whom were part-time pamphleteers themselves. The novel, a genre that emerged during the eighteenth century, was from the beginning shot through with satirical colours borrowed from popular romances and scandal sheets. This Handbook is a guide to the different kinds of satire written in English during the 'long' eighteenth century. It focuses on texts that appeared between the restoration of the Stuart monarchy in 1660 and the outbreak of the French Revolution in 1789. Outlier chapters extend the story back to first decade of the seventeenth century, and forward to the second decade of the nineteenth. The scope of the volume is not confined by genre, however. So prevalent was the satirical mode in writing of the age that this book serves as a broad and characteristic survey of its literature. The Oxford Handbook of Eighteenth-Century Satire reflects developments in historical criticism of eighteenth-century writing over the last two decades, and provides a forum in which the widening diversity of literary, intellectual, and socio-historical approaches to the period's texts can come together.
Book Synopsis Political Controversy by : Robert D. Spector
Download or read book Political Controversy written by Robert D. Spector and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 1992-02-28 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work provides the first full-scale examination of the eighteenth century periodical Political Controversy and of the essay-sheets reprinted therein, Briton, Auditor, North Briton, and Monitor. These essay-sheets were published in England at the end of the Seven Years' War with France, in support of and in opposition to Lord Bute's proposed terms in the treaty negotiations. Political Controversy reprinted the essay-sheets weekly along with the editor's annotations, material from other publications, and original contributions from readers. The journal provides modern readers with a good example of eighteenth century propaganda techniques, and is a guide to the issues revolving around the war, the struggle for governmental control, the British Empire, and the liberty of the press. This book provides a clear analysis of the methods used in the political propaganda of the journal and the essay-sheets, including the writings of three significant authors, Tobias Smollett, Arthur Murphy, and John Wilkes. The work opens with a discussion of the essay-sheets and their relationship to one another, and follows with two chapters devoted to Political Controversy. The final chapter covers the most significant case for freedom of the press in England up to that time, North Briton, No. 45. This book will be of interest to scholars and students concerned with journalism, history, political science, and literature.
