Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As recently as fifty years ago most people expected to lose their teeth as they aged. Few children benefited from braces to straighten their teeth, and cosmetic procedures to change the appearance of smiles were largely unknown. Today, many Canadians enjoy straight, white teeth and far more of them are keeping their teeth for the entirety of their lives. Yet these advances have not reached everyone. The Smile Gap examines the enormous improvements that have taken place over the past century. The use of fluorides, emphasis on toothbrushing, the rise of cosmetic dentistry, and better access to dental care have had a profound effect on the oral health and beauty of Canadians. Yet while the introduction of employer-provided dental insurance in the 1970s has allowed for regular visits to the dentist for many people, a significant number of Canadians still lack access to good oral health care, especially disabled Canadians, those on social assistance, the working poor, the elderly, and new immigrants. At the same time, an attractive smile has become increasingly important in the workplace and in relationships. People with damaged and missing teeth are at a substantial disadvantage, not just because of the pain and suffering caused by poor oral health, but because we live in a society that prizes good teeth and warm smiles. The first history of oral health in Canada, The Smile Gap reveals that despite the gains made, too many Canadians go without any dental care, with damaging consequences for their oral health, general physical health, and self-image. To complete our health care system, it is time to close the gap.

Book excerpt: You could be forgiven for thinking that the smile has no history; it has always been the same. However, just as different cultures in our own day have different rules about smiling, so did different societies in the past. In fact, amazing as it might seem, it was only in late eighteenth century France that western civilization discovered the art of the smile. In the 'Old Regime of Teeth' which prevailed in western Europe until then, smiling was quite literally frowned upon. Individuals were fatalistic about tooth loss, and their open mouths would often have been visually repulsive. Rules of conduct dating back to Antiquity disapproved of the opening of the mouth to express feelings in most social situations. Open and unrestrained smiling was associated with the impolite lower orders. In late eighteenth-century Paris, however, these age-old conventions changed, reflecting broader transformations in the way people expressed their feelings. This allowed the emergence of the modern smile par excellence: the open-mouthed smile which, while highlighting physical beauty and expressing individual identity, revealed white teeth. It was a transformation linked to changing patterns of politeness, new ideals of sensibility, shifts in styles of self-presentation - and, not least, the emergence of scientific dentistry. These changes seemed to usher in a revolution, a revolution in smiling. Yet if the French revolutionaries initially went about their business with a smile on their faces, the Reign of Terror soon wiped it off. Only in the twentieth century would the white-tooth smile re-emerge as an accepted model of self-presentation. In this entertaining, absorbing, and highly original work of cultural history, Colin Jones ranges from the history of art, literature, and culture to the history of science, medicine, and dentistry, to tell a unique and untold story about a facial expression at the heart of western civilization.

Book excerpt: The Institute of Medicine (IOM) Roundtable on Health Literacy focuses on bringing together leaders from the federal government, foundations, health plans, associations, and private companies to address challenges facing health literacy practice and research and to identify approaches to promote health literacy in both the public and private sectors. The roundtable serves to educate the public, press, and policy makers regarding the issues of health literacy, sponsoring workshops to discuss approaches to resolve health literacy challenges. It also builds partnerships to move the field of health literacy forward by translating research findings into practical strategies for implementation. The Roundtable held a workshop March 29, 2012, to explore the field of oral health literacy. The workshop was organized by an independent planning committee in accordance with the procedures of the National Academy of Sciences. The planning group was composed of Sharon Barrett, Benard P. Dreyer, Alice M. Horowitz, Clarence Pearson, and Rima Rudd. The role of the workshop planning committee was limited to planning the workshop. Unlike a consensus committee report, a workshop summary may not contain conclusions and recommendations, except as expressed by and attributed to individual presenters and participants. Therefore, the summary has been prepared by the workshop rapporteur as a factual summary of what occurred at the workshop.

Reunion Gap series: Book One: Strangers Like Us Book Two: Liars Like Us Book Three: Lovers Like Us Book Four: Couples Like Us STRANGERS LIKE US When the son of the man who lost everything falls in love with the daughter of the man who stole it all, there can only be heartache ahead. A tale of deception, secrets, forgiveness and redemption set in a small town. Rogan Donovan gave up the glamour of big city life and returned home to help his family rebuild their lives after a smooth-talking stranger swindled his parents out of their life savings. But some things—like reputation and trust—can’t be rebuilt, and small towns never forget past offenses. When Elizabeth Hayes arrives in Reunion Gap, bent on helping the people her father cheated, Rogan opens his heart to her, unaware she’s the daughter of the man who destroyed his father’s life. Despite her good intentions, Elizabeth’s secret will be exposed creating heartache, resentment, and bitterness. Will forgiveness and redemption follow? LIARS LIKE US What happens when destiny ignores the rules? Tate Alexander has the good luck to be born with looks and charm, and the bad luck to belong to a family where money and power mean more than honor and integrity. When he returns to Reunion Gap to take over his father’s company, he’s determined to uncover and right the wrongs his father committed. He’s also determined to win over Charlotte Donovan, the woman who’s stolen his heart. Charlotte Donovan is big on causes and vows no man will ever “own” her, especially a playboy who can’t commit to a vehicle, let alone a woman. However, her heart isn’t listening to her brain. The only way to battle that is to create a web of lies that keeps Tate believing she doesn’t care about him. But maybe she’s so busy keeping her lies in place that she almost misses the man’s devotion to his siblings, and his commitment to righting past wrongs his father committed. When the lies catch up with her, it’s not going to be easy for a man like Tate to forgive a woman who betrayed his trust. Will it be too late for them or can destiny step in once again and give them a chance at happiness? LIARS LIKE US The only woman he’s ever trusted is about to betray him… Luke Donovan is the irresistible bad boy every woman wants, and no woman can catch. Until he meets Helena Montrey. There’s something about her reserved manner and fresh-faced beauty that makes him want to commit…to her. Damn, but he’s finally fallen in love! It’s time to face up to past mistakes and returning to his hometown of Reunion Gap and the family he deserted is the first step. After her fiancé’s betrayal makes her question her ability to tell an honest man from a liar, Helena Montrey shies away from men. Then she meets Luke Donovan. Her heart wants to tell him she’s the creator of a very successful greeting card line, not the struggling waitress and wannabe-writer he thinks she is. But her brain forces her to wait until she’s sure the former bad boy with an admitted penchant for the open roads and constant change, is in this for keeps. When the couple arrives in Reunion Gap, the Donovans are waiting for them with a lot of questions, and a ton of concerns. How is it that a woman they’ve never heard of ends up with a man who’s vowed he’ll never be tied down? What’s the woman’s back story? More importantly, what is she hiding? The truth about Helena will come out, and then Luke must decide if he loves her enough to give her a second chance. The Donovans aren’t going to stand by and watch this heartbreak happen without getting involved. After all, what’s family for, if not to get involved?

Book excerpt: Bridging the Gap is an exposure, an exposure to family bonding. It is an ardent appeal to maintain a sound equilibrium between the past and the present, the present and the future. For the author, this appeal had been lodged against her by her father. Now it has been extended to her children. In the near future, it would be passed on to her grandchildren too, she thinks. Bridging the Gap, an autobiographical work, is a telling tale of a mothers struggle throughout her life to get a foothold to assert herself. She wishes to augur her children through her experiences. Torn by the inner conflicts, she tries to focus on her relationship with her in-laws. Finally, as a mother-in-law, she could identify herself with her own. The book delves deep into self-realization, keeping pace with the eternal gap between the old and the young and exploring various ways to bridge the gap as well.
