Book excerpt: FP6 is a fundamentally new and different scheme for driving European research further and faster than ever before. It provides much-needed direction for the European Research Area, shaping and structuring the face of European research in years to come. Alongside the new instruments created especially for FP6, such as networks of excellence and integrated projects, a number of past instruments have been included to ensure continuity from one Framework Programme to another. The purpose of this guide is to provide prospective participants in EU research programmes - and anyone interested in the future of European research - with some useful background information, tips and a general overview of the Sixth Framework Programme. This guide will also enable the readers to assess : - the opportunities for their organisation, research centre, network of excellence, etc. under FP6, - whether their partnership has the resources needed for a successful application and, if not, - where they can get help in making a successful application for co-funding with the European Commission.

Book Synopsis Making Gender Equality Happen by : Rosalind Cavaghan
Download or read book Making Gender Equality Happen written by Rosalind Cavaghan and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2017-05-25 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In theory, the EU’s ‘Gender Mainstreaming’ policy should mark it out as a trail-blazer in gender equality, but gender equality activists in Europe confront a knotty problem; most civil servants and policy makers can’t understand how to ‘mainstream’ gender. Making Gender Equality Happen argues that we should take this problem seriously. In this book Cavaghan uncovers the social processes that make gender appear irrelevant to so many policy makers using a new method, gender knowledge contestation analysis. Building on this new perspective Cavaghan identifies: barriers to effective gender mainstreaming; mechanisms of resistance to gender mainstreaming; and the steps towards positive change, which gender mainstreaming can yield, even when results stop short of ‘transformation’. These findings present fresh perspectives for policy makers and activists aiming to make gender equality happen. Cavaghan’s new method also opens fresh avenues in feminist EU studies, which are particularly relevant in the wake of the financial crisis, as the EU seems to be stepping away from its commitments to gender equality.

Book Synopsis Engineering, Development and Philosophy by : Steen Hyldgaard Christensen
Download or read book Engineering, Development and Philosophy written by Steen Hyldgaard Christensen and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-10-30 with total page 426 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This inclusive, cross-cultural study rethinks the nexus between engineering, development, and culture. It offers diverse commentary from a range of disciplinary perspectives on how the philosophies of today’s cultural triumvirate—American, European and Chinese—are shaped and given nuance by the cross-fertilization of engineering and development. Scholars from the humanities and social sciences as well as engineers themselves reflect on key questions that arise in this relational context, such as how international development work affects the professional views, identities, practice and ethics of engineers. The first volume to offer a systematic and collaborative study that cuts across continental boundaries, the book delineates the kinds of skills and competences that tomorrow’s engineering success stories will require, and analyzes fascinating aspects of the interplay between engineering and philosophy, such as how traditionally Chinese ways of thinking can influence modern engineering practice in the world’s most populous country. China’s problematic mix of engineering woes and wonders, from the high-profile crash on its high-profile rail network to its ‘bird’s nest’ Olympic stadium, adds to the urgency for reform, while Europe’s Enlightenment-informed legal frameworks are contrasted with Chinese mechanisms in their governance of the field of nanotechnology, a crucial element of future technical evolution. Fascinating and compelling in equal measure, this volume addresses one of the topics at the leading edge of humanity’s quest to survive, and to thrive.
Book Synopsis Solutions to master the Demographic Change: Ambient Assisted Living for the Elderly by : Franz Gosch
Download or read book Solutions to master the Demographic Change: Ambient Assisted Living for the Elderly written by Franz Gosch and published by Anchor Academic Publishing (aap_verlag). This book was released on 2014-02-01 with total page 47 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How will the Western World manage to master the implications of the demographic change? The answer to this may be Ambient Assisted Living (AAL) that becomes the topic of this research study. The aim of the research is to present the field of AAL with relation to home care. Furthermore, the work of the European Union (EU) in the field of AAL is presented as the EU is a major key player in enhancing research on AAL solutions that help meeting the demands of the future. Moreover, a categorization scheme of AAL solutions is developed through research evidence. Additionally, characteristics of a successful innovation given by the Diffusion of Innovations theory by E. M. Rogers are used to identify challenges for the diffusion process of AAL. Eventually, knowledge and evidence from the research conducted is used to give recommendations for the future concerning the diffusion and research directions of AAL.

Book Synopsis World Yearbook of Education 2006 by : Jenny Ozga
Download or read book World Yearbook of Education 2006 written by Jenny Ozga and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-01-11 with total page 362 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume considers the ways in which educational research is being shaped by policy across the globe. Policy effects on research are increasingly influential, as policies in and beyond education drive the formation of a knowledge-based economy by supporting increased international competitiveness through more effective, evidence-based interventions in schooling, education and training systems. What consequences does this increased steering have for research in education? How do transnational agencies make their influence felt on educational research? How do national systems and traditions of educational research - and relations with policy - respond to these new pressures? What effects does it have on the quality of research and on the freedom of researchers to pursue their own agendas? The 2006 volume of the World Yearbook of Education explores these issues, focusing on three key themes: globalising policy and research in education steering education research in national contexts global-local politics of education research. The 2006 volume has a truly global reach, incorporating transnational policy perspectives from the OECD and the European Commission, alongside national cases from across the world in contrasting contexts that include North and South America, Canada, France, Singapore, China, Russia and New Zealand. The range of contributions reflect how pervasive these developments are, how much is new in this situation and to what extent evidence-based policy pressures on research in education build on past relationships between education and policy. This book considers the impact of the steering processes on the work and identities of individual researchers and considers how research can be organised to play a more active role in the politics of the knowledge economy and learning society.
