Book excerpt: Why would any educated scientist with a PhD advocate a literal interpretation of the six days of creation? Why, indeed, when only one in three Americans believes "the Bible is the actual word of God and is to be taken literally, word for word" according to a recent Gallup poll. Science can neither prove nor disprove evolution any more than it can creation. Certainly there are no human eyewitness accounts of either. However, certain factors are present today which are capable of swaying one's beliefs one way or the other. In this book are the testimonies of fifty men and women holding doctorates in a wide range of scientific fields who have been convicted by the evidence to believe in a literal six-day creation. For example, meet: The geneticist who concludes that there must have been 150 billion forerunners of "modern man" in order for the natural selection required by evolution to have taken place in the development of man. The evidence for such vast numbers of "prehistoric man" is in dire shortage. The orthodontist who discovered that European museum fossils of ancient man have been tampered with to adhere to evolution theories. The geologist who studied under the late Stephen Jay Gould and literally cut the Bible to pieces before totally rejecting evolution. All fifty of these scientists, through faith and scientific fact, have come to the conclusion that God's Word is true and everything had its origin not so very long ago, in the beginning, In Six Days.

Book Synopsis On the Six Days of Creation by : St. Gregory of Nyssa
Download or read book On the Six Days of Creation written by St. Gregory of Nyssa and published by CUA Press. This book was released on 2021-05-07 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first volume of our new series, Fathers of the Church: Shorter Works, will be available in the summer of 2021. This series, to be printed only in paperback format, will offer English translations of treatises, homilies, poems, and letters of the Church Fathers in slim, easily affordable volumes. In this way a multitude of important writings will become accessible to scholars and students as well as the reading public. This is the first complete English translation of St. Gregory of Nyssa’s treatise On the Six Days of Creation (In Hexaemeron). It was probably written in 380-381, and is designed as both a defense and a critique of his recently deceased brother St. Basil’s better known homilies on the creation story as set out in the first chapter of Genesis. At the same time it incorporates Gregory’s own observations on the Genesis text, which reflect his desire to show the consistency between Scripture and the philosophy and natural science of his day A notable feature is Gregory’s presentation of God’s creation of the world as what has been called a “substantification” of God’s own will, creatio ex Deo rather than creatio ex nihilo. Other ideas of his seem interestingly to foreshadow those of modern science, notably his challenge to the idea that matter is a primary ontological category and his theory that the world as we know it developed through a process of “sequence” (akolouthia) from an originally simultaneous creation of everything. Gregory differs from Basil in maintaining that the “waters above the firmament” in Genesis 1 are spiritual rather than physical in nature. He uses a modified form of Aristotle’s theory of elements, together with some interesting observations on geography and meteorology, to construct a detailed and ingenious account of the “water cycle.” This description enables him to refute Basil’s notion that there needs to be an extra supply of physical water above the firmament so that the water lost from earthly seas and rivers through evaporation can be “topped up.”
Book Synopsis Creation in Six Days by : James B. Jordan
Download or read book Creation in Six Days written by James B. Jordan and published by Canon Press & Book Service. This book was released on 1999 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Creation in Six Days offers an exegetical, literary, and theological defense of the traditional interpretation of the Genesis account of six-day creation. Jordan's account is primarily designed to answer any approach to the text of Genesis, such as the increasingly popular Framework Hypothesis, that pits the text's literary features against its historical and narrative sense. Beyond his exegetical critique of several prominent positions, Jordan offers a constructive reading of the early parts of Genesis and also seeks to uncover the assumptions which attract people to the Framework Interpretation and similar views. The explanation, he says, lies in the acceptance of many of the questionable assumptions of modern science on the part of most Christians today, coupled with the pervasiveness of a gnostic or nonhistorical attitude toward the Christian faith.
Book Synopsis Seven Days That Divide the World by : John C. Lennox
Download or read book Seven Days That Divide the World written by John C. Lennox and published by Zondervan. This book was released on 2011-08-23 with total page 191 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What did the writer of Genesis mean by “the first day”? Is it a literal week or a series of time periods? If I believe that the earth is 4.5 billion years old, am I denying the authority of Scripture? In response to the continuing controversy over the interpretation of the creation narrative in Genesis, John Lennox proposes a succinct method of reading and interpreting the first chapters of Genesis without discounting either science or Scripture. With examples from history, a brief but thorough exploration of the major interpretations, and a look into the particular significance of the creation of human beings, Lennox suggests that Christians can heed modern scientific knowledge while staying faithful to the biblical narrative. He moves beyond a simple response to the controversy, insisting that Genesis teaches us far more about the God of Jesus Christ and about God’s intention for creation than it does about the age of the earth. With this book, Lennox offers a careful yet accessible introduction to a scientifically-savvy, theologically-astute, and Scripturally faithful interpretation of Genesis.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fourteen theological scholars address key topics related to the age of the earth, which is the crucial issue of debate in the church today regarding origins. Bringing to bear rigorous biblical, theological, and historical arguments in favor of a six-day creation, the global Flood, and a young earth, they also provide much-needed critiques of a number of contemporary old-earth interpretations of the book of Genesis. This fresh defense of the literal history of Genesis 1-11 nicely complements other studies which focus more on the scientific evidence of young-earth creationism. As such, this book can serve as a versatile supplement to other works, but is also designed to be used as a standalone text for seminary and Bible college professors and students, pastors, missionaries, and others who want in-depth apologetic resources. Coming to Grips with Genesis: Biblical Authority and the Age of the Earthincludes: Forewords by Dr. John MacArthur, President of the Master's Seminary and Senior Pastor of Grace Community Church, Sun Valley, CA; and the late Dr. Henry Morris, Founder and President Emeritus, Institute for Creation Research Detailed analysis of the verbs of Genesis 1 A defense of the Genesis 5 & 11 genealogies as strict chronologies Reasons for rejecting millions of years of death and natural evil before Adam's sin Careful reflection on Jesus' teachings regarding a young earth

Book excerpt: Discover how many evangelical leaders, willingly or unwittingly, are undermining the authority of God's Word by compromising the Bible in Genesis Learn how allowing for an old/universe of billions of years unlocks a door of compromise Heed the wake-up call to the Church to return to the authority of God's Word, beginning in Genesis. Today, most Bible colleges, seminaries, K-12 Christian schools, and now even parts of the homeschool movement do not accept the first eleven chapters of Genesis as literal history. They try to fit the supposed billions of years into Genesis, and some teach evolution as fact. Our churches are largely following suit. Ken Ham, international speaker and author on biblical authority, examines how compromise starting in Genesis, particularly in regard to the six days of creation and the earth's age, have filtered down from the Bible colleges and seminaries to pastors—and finally to parents and their children. This erosive legacy is seen in generations of young people leaving the Church—2/3 of them. Get the facts, discover God's truth, and help bring a new reformation to the Church by helping to call it back to the authority of God's Word.
Book Synopsis In Six Days God Created by : Paulin Bedard
Download or read book In Six Days God Created written by Paulin Bedard and published by Xulon Press. This book was released on 2013-01-01 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book refutes the framework interpretation and other figurative interpretations of the days of creation and shows the majestic progression of God's work of creation in six literal days. The author enters into debate with renowned contemporary theologians and seeks to give exegetical and theological guidance to modern students, pastors, and church leaders amidst the present attractiveness of non literal interpretations of Genesis 1 and 2. Rev. Bedard's focused critique of the Framework Hypothesis and his vigorous defence of the plain meaning of Scripture deserves a wide reading. Heartily recommended! - Dr. Cornelis Van Dam (Professor Emeritus, Old Testament, Canadian Reformed Theological Seminary) Those who find themselves attracted to the Framework Hypothesis should read this book for its thorough, incisive, and cautionary critique of this theory and its potential consequences. - Dr. Jannes Smith (Professor of Old Testament, Canadian Reformed Theological Seminary) Paulin Bedard has done an admirable job of highlighting the dangers inherent in this insidious interpretation of the creation account. His extensive research demonstrates that those who embrace the Framework Hypothesis often are influenced by the 'apparent' scientific evidence for long ages in their reading of Genesis 1 and 2. Clearly presenting the presuppositions and refuting the arguments of those who promote these erroneous views, it is well worth a read. - Dr. Anco Farenhorst (DVM) Paulin Bedard has written an excellent refutation of figurative views of Genesis 1. He shows the necessity of maintaining the plain truth of God's Word, in face of current attacks on its credibility. I heartily recommend this book, particularly for Reformed (and other) theologians and students. - Dr. John Byl (Professor Emeritus, Mathematical Science, Trinity Western University) Rev. Bedard is a graduate of the Reformed Seminary in Aix-en-Provence, France. He is currently pastor of the Reformed Church of Saint-Georges, Quebec, Canada.

Book Synopsis Christ and the Bible, Third Edition by : John Wenham
Download or read book Christ and the Bible, Third Edition written by John Wenham and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2009-08-01 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Defense of the Bible begins with rational proofs for the historicity and accuracy of its documents. Christ and the Bible places the argument for the authority of scripture squarely on Jesus. With uncluttered logic and straightforward prose Wenham marshals Gospel evidence to show Jesus' own view of Scripture-that it is (1) historically accurate, (2) authoritative, (3) the standard for ethics, and (4) the verbally inspired revelation of God. He then considers why we should listen to Jesus when he makes such claims and why "Christ's view should be the Christian view." The study substantiates Jesus' reliability influence on all New Testament writers. Finally, Wenham considers two related problems: first, which writings really belong in the Bible; second, the reliability of the text as now available. The presentation is easy to read and understand. This third edition updates and dialogs with recent developments.

Book Synopsis Genesis: Translation and Commentary by : Robert Alter
Download or read book Genesis: Translation and Commentary written by Robert Alter and published by W. W. Norton & Company. This book was released on 1997-09-17 with total page 382 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "[Here is] the Genesis for our generation and beyond."—Robert Fagles Genesis begins with the making of heaven and earth and all life, and ends with the image of a mummy—Joseph's—in a coffin. In between come many of the primal stories in Western culture: Adam and Eve's expulsion from the garden of Eden, Cain's murder of Abel, Noah and the Flood, the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah, Abraham's binding of Isaac, the covenant of God and Abraham, Isaac's blessing of Jacob in place of Esau, the saga of Joseph and his brothers. In Robert Alter's brilliant translation, these stories cohere in a powerful narrative of the tortuous relations between fathers and sons, husbands and wives, eldest and younger brothers, God and his chosen people, the people of Israel and their neighbors. Alter's translation honors the meanings and literary strategies of the ancient Hebrew and conveys them in fluent English prose. It recovers a Genesis with the continuity of theme and motif of a wholly conceived and fully realized book. His insightful, fully informed commentary illuminates the book in all its dimensions.
