Book Synopsis The Moral Culture of the Scottish Enlightenment, 1690-1805 by : Thomas Ahnert
Download or read book The Moral Culture of the Scottish Enlightenment, 1690-1805 written by Thomas Ahnert and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2014-01-01 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the Enlightenment it was often argued that moral conduct, rather than adherence to theological doctrine, was the true measure of religious belief. Thomas Ahnert argues that this “enlightened” emphasis on conduct in religion relied less on arguments from reason alone than has been believed. In fact, Scottish Enlightenment champions advocated a practical program of “moral culture,” in which revealed religion was of central importance. Ahnert traces this to theological controversies going back as far as the Reformation concerning the conditions of salvation. His findings present a new point of departure for all scholars interested in the intersection of religion and Enlightenment.

Book Synopsis Narratives of Enlightenment by : Karen O'Brien
Download or read book Narratives of Enlightenment written by Karen O'Brien and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1997-06-05 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Narratives of Enlightenment is an interdisciplinary study of cosmopolitan approaches to the past. It reappraises the work of five of the most important narrative historians of the century - Voltaire, David Hume, William Robertson, Edward Gibbon and the historian of the American Revolution, David Ramsay - in the context of political and national debates in France, Scotland, England and America; and it investigates the nature and degree of their intellectual investment in the idea of a common European civilisation. Karen O'Brien combines the methodologies of literary criticism and intellectual history to explore debates about Enlightenments and the political uses of narrative. Where previous studies have emphasised the growth of nationalism in eighteenth-century literature, she reveals the development of cosmopolitan ways of thinking beyond national cultural issues.

Book Synopsis Orthodoxy and Enlightenment by : Jeffrey M. Suderman
Download or read book Orthodoxy and Enlightenment written by Jeffrey M. Suderman and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 2001-10-16 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: George Campbell (1719-1796) has long been regarded as a seminal figure in the development of modern theories of persuasion, but modern students of rhetoric seldom look beyond his Philosophy of Rhetoric to his equally important religious writings. Campbell is portrayed as a secular figure, and his contributions to eighteenth-century Christian apology have been largely forgotten. In his own time, however, Campbell had an international reputation as a champion of the Gospel miracles against the sceptical assaults of the philosopher David Hume and as a respected biblical scholar and authority on Church history. Orthodoxy and Enlightenment is the first study to deal with the entire range of Campbell's interests and publications. Suderman sets Campbell firmly in his eighteenth-century context, reconstructing his life and times from contemporary and manuscript sources. He argues that while Campbell's wide-ranging scholarly and scientific interests made him as much a man of the Enlightenment as his better-known contemporaries Voltaire and Hume, he used the critical tools of the Enlightenment to defend a sincere and orthodox Christian faith. The detailed reconstruction of Campbell's apologetic system will be of interest to students of history, philosophy, literary criticism, rhetoric, and religious thought, as well as to general readers interested in the eighteenth century.
