Book excerpt: AN INTOLERANCE FOR TEMPERANCE Despite Iowa's statewide prohibition against liquor, Sioux City refuses to stay on the wagon. The saloon owners give a share of their profits to the city treasury to stay in business—and keep the newly established police force off their backs. But no amount of money can sway the Reverend George Channing Haddock from his fire-and-brimstone sermons against the evils of alcohol. The city's police commissioner has asked Clint Adams to protect the preacher from those seeking a different kind of retribution. Although not a teetotaler, Clint cannot stand by and allow the holy man to get riddled with holes. And when the good reverend survives some attempts made on his life, he's grateful to have the Gunsmith as his own angel of vengeance...

Book excerpt: "Brevet 2nd Lieutenant John Grattan set the stage when, in August 1854, his small command marched into a Brule camp near Fort Laramie to arrest a Lakota man. Grattan's rash decision to fire on the camp cost him, his interpreter, and twenty-nine soldiers their lives. A year later, sent to Nebraska Territory to avenge this loss, General Harney sighted a village on the banks of Blue Water Creek. His force attacked Little Thunder's village, killing dozens of men, women, and children and taking others captive on a battlefield that stretches across a buffalo ranch now owned by television mogul Ted Turner."--BOOK JACKET.

Book Synopsis American Indians in World War I by : Thomas Anthony Britten
Download or read book American Indians in World War I written by Thomas Anthony Britten and published by . This book was released on 1997 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over 17,000 Native Americans registered for military service during World War I. Of these about 10,000 either enlisted or were drafted into the American Expeditionary Force. Three related questions are examined in depth for the first time in this book: What were the battlefield experiences of Native Americans? How did racial and cultural stereotypes about Indians affect their duties? Were Native American veterans changed by their military service? Many American Indians distinguished themselves fighting on the Western Front. And as compared to black and Mexican American soldiers, Indians enjoyed near universal respect when in uniform. To celebrate their patriotism during and after the war, Indians could even perform warrior society dances otherwise proscribed. Both in combat and in their support roles on the home front, including volunteer contributions by Indian women, Native Americans hoped their efforts would result in a more vigorous application of democracy. But the Bureau of Indian Affairs continued to cut health and education programs and to suppress Indian culture.

Book excerpt: This two-volume encyclopedia offers a unique insight into the Civil War from a state and local perspective, showing how the American experience of the conflict varied significantly based on location. Intended for general-interest readers and high school and college students, American Civil War: A State-by-State Encyclopedia serves as a unique ready reference that documents the important contributions of each individual state to the American Civil War and underscores the similarities and differences between the states, both in the North and the South. Each state chapter leads off with an overview essay about that state's involvement in the war and then presents entries on prominent population centers, manufacturing facilities, and military posts within each state; important battles or other notable events that occurred within that state during the war; and key individuals from each state, both civilian and military. The A–Z entries within each state chapter enable readers to understand how the specific contributions and political climate of states resulted in the very different situations each state found itself in throughout the war. The set also provides a detailed chronology that will help students place important events in proper order.
