Book excerpt: This edited volume presents a collection of carefully refereed articles covering the latest advances in Automorphic Forms and Number Theory, that were primarily developed from presentations given at the 2012 “International Conference on Automorphic Forms and Number Theory,” held in Muscat, Sultanate of Oman. The present volume includes original research as well as some surveys and outlines of research altogether providing a contemporary snapshot on the latest activities in the field and covering the topics of: Borcherds products Congruences and Codes Jacobi forms Siegel and Hermitian modular forms Special values of L-series Recently, the Sultanate of Oman became a member of the International Mathematical Society. In view of this development, the conference provided the platform for scientific exchange and collaboration between scientists of different countries from all over the world. In particular, an opportunity was established for a close exchange between scientists and students of Germany, Oman, and Japan. The conference was hosted by the Sultan Qaboos University and the German University of Technology in Oman.

This book was released on 2004-10-11 with total page 159 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Around 1994 R. Borcherds discovered a new type of meromorphic modular form on the orthogonal group $O(2,n)$. These "Borcherds products" have infinite product expansions analogous to the Dedekind eta-function. They arise as multiplicative liftings of elliptic modular forms on $(SL)_2(R)$. The fact that the zeros and poles of Borcherds products are explicitly given in terms of Heegner divisors makes them interesting for geometric and arithmetic applications. In the present text the Borcherds' construction is extended to Maass wave forms and is used to study the Chern classes of Heegner divisors. A converse theorem for the lifting is proved.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At the time of Professor Rademacher's death early in 1969, there was available a complete manuscript of the present work. The editors had only to supply a few bibliographical references and to correct a few misprints and errors. No substantive changes were made in the manu script except in one or two places where references to additional material appeared; since this material was not found in Rademacher's papers, these references were deleted. The editors are grateful to Springer-Verlag for their helpfulness and courtesy. Rademacher started work on the present volume no later than 1944; he was still working on it at the inception of his final illness. It represents the parts of analytic number theory that were of greatest interest to him. The editors, his students, offer this work as homage to the memory of a great man to whom they, in common with all number theorists, owe a deep and lasting debt. E. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1929, Mr. Toyosaburo Taniguchi established the Taniguchi Foundation with the goal of promoting research in the basic sciences in Japan and to engender mutual understanding on an international level via the exchange of ideas and research. In 1956, he instituted a division for mathematics within the Foundation and sponsored the first summer seminar. Since that time, the seminar has been held each year on various mathematical topics. In 1974, Mr. Taniguchi promoted and sponsored an International Symposium in various fields of science on a smaller scale. His aim was to raise the level of scientific thought and research, while providing a forum where promising young scholars the world over could gather informally to exchange thoughts and to contribute their knowledge. These gatherings were held until 1999. This volume is a collection of the research manuscripts written by the invited speakers at the final conference set up by the Taniguchi Foundation, the Taniguchi Conference on Mathematics 1998, held in Nara, Japan. The conference was aimed at gathering all previous participants of Taniguchi Symposia. The subject areas were chosen to include all important and active fields of mathematics. Hence the topics in this volume are quite diverse. The contributors are world-class mathematicians who are generally reporting on subjects for which they are well known. For example, contributions include R. E. Borcherds on vertex algebras, M. Kontsevich on non-commutative algebraic manifolds, P.-L. Lions on fluid mechnics, M. Kashiwara on micro-localization, J. Kollar on the topology of algebraic varieties, S. Mori on rational curves in algebraic varieties, and others. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The functions studied in this monogra9h are a cross between elliptic functions and modular forms in one variable. Specifically, we define a Jacobi form on SL (~) to be a holomorphic function 2 (JC = upper half-plane) satisfying the t\-10 transformation eouations 2Tiimcz· k CT +d a-r +b z) (1) ((cT+d) e cp(T, z) cp CT +d ' CT +d (2) rjl(T, z+h+]l) and having a Four·ier expansion of the form 00 e2Tii(nT +rz) (3) cp(T, z) 2: c(n, r) 2:: rE~ n=O 2 r ~ 4nm Here k and m are natural numbers, called the weight and index of rp, respectively. Note that th e function cp (T, 0) is an ordinary modular formofweight k, whileforfixed T thefunction z-+rjl( -r, z) isa function of the type normally used to embed the elliptic curve ~/~T + ~ into a projective space. If m= 0, then cp is independent of z and the definition reduces to the usual notion of modular forms in one variable. We give three other examples of situations where functions satisfying (1)-(3) arise classically: 1. Theta series. Let Q: ~-+ ~ be a positive definite integer valued quadratic form and B the associated bilinear form.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This comprehensive textbook is devoted to classical and quantum cosmology, with particular emphasis on modern approaches to quantum gravity and string theory and on their observational imprint. It covers major challenges in theoretical physics such as the big bang and the cosmological constant problem. An extensive review of standard cosmology, the cosmic microwave background, inflation and dark energy sets the scene for the phenomenological application of all the main quantum-gravity and string-theory models of cosmology. Born of the author's teaching experience and commitment to bridging the gap between cosmologists and theoreticians working beyond the established laws of particle physics and general relativity, this is a unique text where quantum-gravity approaches and string theory are treated on an equal footing. As well as introducing cosmology to undergraduate and graduate students with its pedagogical presentation and the help of 45 solved exercises, this book, which includes an ambitious bibliography of about 3500 items, will serve as a valuable reference for lecturers and researchers.

The 23rd edition, chaired by 2004 Nobel Laureate David Gross, did not break with that tradition. It gathered most of the leading figures working on the central problem of reconciling EinsteinOCOs theory of gravity with quantum mechanics. These proceedings give a broad overview with unique insight into the most fundamental issues raised by this challenge for 21st century physics, by distinguished renowned scientists. The contributions cover: the status of quantum mechanics, spacetime singularities and breakdown of classical space and time, mathematical structures underlying the most promising attempts under current development, spacetime as an emergent concept, as well as cosmology and the cosmological constant puzzle. A historical overview of the Solvay conferences by historian of sciences Peter Galison opens the volume. In the Solvay tradition, the volume also includes the discussions among the participants OCo many of which were quite lively and illustrate dramatically divergent points of view OCo carefully edited and reproduced in full."
