Jane Yolen's lilting verses and Lisel Jane Ashlock's sensitive portraits convey the cyclical nature of the seasons in this poetic tribute to the characteristics of the four periods of the year.

Book excerpt: This was the summer he discovered what he wanted--at a gruesome museum of criminology far off the beaten track of more timid tourists. Visions of torture inspired his fantasies like a muse. It would prove so terribly fulfilling. The bodies of four men have been discovered in the town of Bradfield. Enlisted to investigate is criminal psychologist Tony Hill. Even for a seasoned professional, the series of mutilation sex murders is unlike anything he's encountered before. But profiling the psychopath is not beyond him. Hill's own past has made him the perfect man to comprehend the killer's motives. It's also made him the perfect victim. A game has begun for the hunter and the hunted. But as Hill confronts his own hidden demons, he must also come face-to-face with an evil so profound he may not have the courage--or the power--to stop it... The Mermaids Singing is a chilling and taut psychological mystery from Val McDermid.

Book excerpt: The Singing Earth is a collection of stories from musician and writer Barrett Martin, which follow his musical adventures around the globe. The reader is taken on a journey that starts with Martin's involvement in the '90s Seattle music scene, and then moves to Australian Aboriginal songlines, Garifuna ancestral drumming, Senegalese griot music, musical diplomacy in Cuba, touring with a Brazilian rock band, recording Shipibo shamanic music in the Peruvian Amazon, playing with a delta blues legend, recording in Jerusalem, Native American ceremonies, and the power of music as a form of political resistance. There is also a companion CD that comes with the book, which has rare, unreleased songs from Martin's various bands, as well as field recordings from the incredible musical environments he has visited. Those who have read the book have called it a musical adventure story that looks at the links between ecology, community, and how music helps us connect with our greater humanity.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dāphā, or dāphā bhajan, is a genre of Hindu-Buddhist devotional singing, performed by male, non-professional musicians of the farmer and other castes belonging to the Newar ethnic group, in the towns and villages of the Kathmandu Valley, Nepal. The songs, their texts, and their characteristic responsorial performance-style represent an extension of pan-South Asian traditions of rāga- and tāla-based devotional song, but at the same time embody distinctive characteristics of Newar culture. This culture is of unique importance as an urban South Asian society in which many traditional models survive into the modern age. There are few book-length studies of non-classical vocal music in South Asia, and none of dāphā. Richard Widdess describes the music and musical practices of dāphā, accounts for their historical origins and later transformations, investigates links with other South Asian traditions, and describes a cultural world in which music is an integral part of everyday social and religious life. The book focusses particularly on the musical system and structures of dāphā, but aims to integrate their analysis with that of the cultural and historical context of the music, in order to address the question of what music means in a traditional South Asian society.
