Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Sinclairs of England But human nature returns; and the doctrine of survival of the fittest would create, if left to itself, an aristocracy which for iron exclusiveness and the worst vices of selection; might surpass all domination that the world has yet seen. The poor and the miserable, below a certain point, would be exterminated; and the fittest must lord it over the earth, as prime monkeys, to an extent beyond conception. An easier way of social existence which left chances to such broken lives as those of Shakespeare, Pope, Scott, Byron, and many others lame of body, is to be preferred to that of the so-called reign of law (for law is as unrealisable as everything else in the eternally limited province of human science); and nothing in our history is more comforting than the knowledge that some field was allowed at all times for the rise of every talent to its rights. There was nepotism enough, but in this there has been at least political safety, for the presumption is usually in favour of experienced stocks having the most natural aptitude for ruling position, though it has never been forgotten that to this law there are brilliant exceptions, who must have their places. No democracy can ever get free from some form of aristocracy, but the wisdom is to keep the best men and women as healthy as possible by continual mixture with the elect of the people. It is an ethnological fact that marriage of those too near of kin is as dangerous as of those too distant in blood, cousins to cousins, northerns to southerns, Swiss villagers to Swiss villagers, Desdemonas to Othelloes; and social unions in a country have similar dangers. But it is the insight that is to be got as to the formation of the nation, from the Norman Conquest downwards, individually rather than collectively, that was the attraction of the toil expended on this subject; and if others also realise something of the inner life of the past through these gatherings, the object will be attained. A word of detail is that the varied spelling of certain places and names is followed because of peculiar light thus thrown on changes of historical value. Spiralling from the outer limits of the Overground to the pinnacle of the Shard, Iain Sinclair encounters a metropolis stretched beyond recognition. The vestiges of secret tunnels, the ghosts of saints and lost poets lie buried by developments, the cycling revolution and Brexit. An electrifying final odyssey, The Last London is an unforgettable vision of the Big Smoke before it disappears into the air of memory.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Significance of Sinclair Now Main Street, a criticism of contemporary life with special reference to its interest and beauty, is important to us socially because, more thoroughly than any novel Since Uncle Tom's Cabin, it has shaken our complacency with regard to the average quality of our civilization. But it and the other work of Mr. Lewis which I shall discuss, are equally important to our literature as a return to the main matter and the manner of our national narrative. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Norman Sinclair, Vol. 2 of 3 I Was strolling one fine afternoon in February through the Park, by way of relaxation after my work, when I descried immediately before me the tall gaunt figure of Mr Jefferson J. Ewins. Without losing a moment I made up to the Yankee, upon whose cadaverous countenance hovered a grim smile as he returned my greeting, protesting that he was as happy as a clam at high water to renew the pleasure of our acquaintance. Mr Ewins was nowise altered in appearance since I saw him last, save that, in honour of the country he had been visiting, he had donned a pair of trousers of the fieriest tartan, which made him rather a conspicuous object, and attracted the notice of several butchers boys, who facetiously inquired if he had been getting his legs cut up into collops. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Jane Sinclair: Or the Fawn of Springvale It is dificult to account for the mingled reverence, and terror, and pity with which we look upon the insane, and it is equally strange that in this case we approach the temple of the mind with deeper homage, when we know that the divinity has passed out of it. It must be from a conviction of this that uncivilized nations venerate deranged persons as inspired and, in some instance go so far, I believe, as even to pay them divine worship. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Norman Sinclair, Vol. 3 of 3 The affair of the mysterious operations on the Stock Exchange seemed to pass from the public mind without exciting any further notice. It was, indeed, alluded to in the House of Commons; but the inuendo was met by one of those vehement protestations of the abso lute perfection of every part of the official machinery which it is so difficult to answer, unless the accuser is prepared with a specific charge and fortified by the strongest evidence. It was lighted by lamps sus pended from the delicately-coloured ceiling, and by a large fire that burnt brightly in the open grate. Standing on the left side of the hearth, with one elbow leaning on the high marble mantelpiece, was a young man of apparently twenty-three or twenty-four years. He had remained motionless, with his face half-buried in his hand, while his father had thus bitterly questioned him; only rousing himself slightly as he gave his monosyllabic answers. There were three other occupants of the room - a fair, pale lady with restless, light coloured eyes that shot quick glances every now and again from father to son; a child, with dark-hanging, heavy hair, and awkward hands, engaged in some plain needlework that seemed to require careful attention, for her head was bent down low over it; and a. Man of about thirty, lounging back in a large arm-chair, reading a newspaper, which he occasionally rustled impatiently. The small clock on the mantelpiece ticked loudly and jarringly, during the long pause that ensued, after the elderly man's satirical outburst.
