Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this breathtaking chronicle of the most spectacular shipwrecks and survivals on the Great Lakes, William Ratigan re-creates vivid scenes of high courage and screaming panic from which no reader can turn away. Included in this striking catalog of catastrophes and Flying Dutchmen are the magnificent excursion liner Eastland, which capsized at her pier in the Chicago River, drowning 835 people within clutching distance of busy downtown streets; the shipwrecked steel freighter Mataafa, which dumped its crew into freezing waters while the snowbound town of Duluth looked on; the dark Sunday in November 1913 when Lake Huron swallowed eight long ships without a man surviving to tell the tale; and the bitter November of 1958 when the Bradley went down in Lake Michigan during one of the greatest killer storms on the freshwater seas. An entire section is dedicated to the wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald -- the most famous maritime loss in modern times -- in Lake Superior in 1975. Chilling watercolor illustrations, photographs, maps, and news clippings accentuate Ratigan's compelling and dramatic storytelling. Sailors, historians, and general readers alike will be swept away by these unforgettable tales of tragedy and heroism.

Book excerpt: Steamboats and Sailors of the Great Lakestraces the evolution of the Great Lakes shipping industry over the last three centuries. The Great Lakes shipping industry can trace its lineage to 1679 with the launching on Lake Erie of the Griffon, a sixty-foot galley weighing nearly fifty tons. Built by LaSalle, a French explorer who had been commissioned to search for a passage through North America to China, it was the first sailing ship to operate on the upper lakes, signaling the dawn of the Great Lakes shipping industry as we know it today. Steamboats and Sailors of the Great Lakes is the most thorough and factual study of the Great Lakes shipping industry written this century. Author Mark L. Thompson tells the fascinating story of the world's most efficient bulk transportation system, describing the Great Lakes freighters, the cargoes of the great ships ,and the men and women who have served as crew. He documents the dramatic changes that have taken places in the industry and looks at the critical role that Great Lakes shipping plays in the economic well-being of the U.S. and Canada, despite the fact tat the size of the fleet and the amount of cargo carried have declined dramatically in recent years. Spanning more than three centuries, from LaSalle's voyage in 1679, through 1975 with the mysterious sinking of the Edmund Fitzgerald, to life aboard today's thousand-foot behemoths, this important volume documents the evolution of the industry through its "Golden Age" at the end of the nineteenth century to the present, with a downsized U.S. fleet that numbers fewer than seventy vessels.

This book was released on 2018-04-08 with total page 229 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Silver has been called both the "investment of the decade" by billionaire Eric Sprott and the "Devil's Metal" by John Levin in the recent past. Those who have been brave enough to collect, invest, or stack silver can certainly attest to both perspectives. The precious metal skyrocketed in price to a high of $49.80 per ounce on the 25th of April 2011, before plummeting back down to the narrow trading range where it has languished for the better part of seven years. This has provided collectors, investors and stackers with an ideal opportunity to accumulate the metal, or equivalent investments, at historically low prices. In stark contrast to the price of the metal has been investment demand, which has been relentless. This investment demand has spurred a plethora of new silver bullion coin releases that have been a boon to collectors. The intent of this book is to provide a comprehensive guide for silver enthusiasts of all types, including collectors, investors and stackers, and all levels of expertise, from those looking at joining the ranks of silver enthusiasts to silver veterans. The guide is comprehensive in terms of both breadth and depth. Specifically, it contains well over two hundred pages of silver content specifically targeted at collectors, investors and stackers, including in excess of 400 original photos of silver coins from over forty countries. The book also lays out the case for silver, demonstrating in a clear and concise manner how the price of the underlying asset has very little downside and extraordinary upside if specific events come to fruition. Rather than dealing in generalities, the guide details specific accumulation strategies for all three types of silver enthusiasts. The 2018 edition is the first edition of what will be an annual release, expanded and updated based on feedback from the silver community.

Book excerpt: In this witty third novel in the Nice series, from beloved actress Celia Imrie, the retired expats in the South of France must rally to save their failing restaurant, and protect Theresa from an unsavory stalker. The beautiful town of Bellevue-sur-Mer, tucked between glitzy Monte Carlo and the plush red carpets of Cannes, is home to Theresa, Carol, William, Benjamin, and Sally: five retired expats who have pooled their resources to set up La Mosaïque, a divine little restaurant. But there is trouble in paradise: the friends are desperately struggling to make ends meet. It will take every bit of their talent and gumption to save La Mosaïque. With fussy customers, obnoxious cruise parties, and a failing delivery van, it's certainly not going to be easy. On top of this, Theresa and Sally have their own distractions. Theresa's teenage granddaughter has run away, and Theresa herself has been getting mysterious phone calls and the strong sense that someone's watching her. Meanwhile, Sally's run into a nasty couple from her acting days, and their barbed jibes are enough to send her on an ill-advised search for the limelight. A Nice Cup of Tea is a delightful cozy mystery, a wickedly fun page-turner that's sassier than a cup of tea, no matter how Nice!

Book excerpt: The first biography of Sherman's chief engineer and the man whose post-Civil War engineering work changed Great Lakes navigation forever Orlando M. Poe chronicles the life of one of the most influential yet underrated and overlooked soldiers during the Civil War. After joining the Union Army in 1861, Poe commanded the 2nd Michigan Infantry in the Peninsula Campaign and led brigades at Second Bull Run and Fredericksburg. He was then sent west and became one of the Union heroes in the defense of Knoxville. Poe served under several of the war's greatest generals, including George McClellan and William T. Sherman, who appointed him chief engineer to oversee the burning of Atlanta and Sherman's March to the Sea. Though technically only a captain in the regular army at the war's end, Poe was one of Sherman's most valued subordinates, and he was ultimately appointed brevet brigadier general for his bravery and service. After the war, Poe supervised the design and construction of numerous Great Lakes lighthouses, all of which are still in service. He rejoined Sherman's staff in 1873 as engineer aide-de-camp and continued his role as trusted advisor until the general's retirement in 1884. Poe then returned to his adopted home in Detroit where he began planning his ultimate post-Civil War engineering achievement: the design and construction of what would become the largest shipping lock in the world at Sault St. Marie, Michigan. Mining an extensive collection of Poe's unpublished personal papers that span his entire civil and military career, and illustrating the narrative with many previously unpublished photographs, Paul Taylor brings to life for the first time the story of one of the nineteenth century's most overlooked war heroes.

Book excerpt: “Not since Sebastian Junger in The Perfect Storm has a writer captured so well the fury of the seas as Curt Brown.” —The Maritime Executive Through masterful research and elegant prose, Curt Brown traces the devastating intersection of nature’s fury and corporate greed. It was Thanksgiving week 1905, and the industry bosses wanted one last run before the shipping season ended; the bottom line depended on it. The tragedy that followed led to the building of Split Rock Lighthouse—and went down in history as one of the nation’s worst shipping disasters. The explosive squall caught nearly 30 vessels on Lake Superior. In the wake of the storm, weather forecasting and shipbuilding were forever changed. Drawn from the accounts of witnesses and survivors, So Terrible a Storm is a must-read.
