This book was released on 2019-05-15 with total page 227 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most of Japan's leading textile firms date back to the turn of the century. Unlike many of their Western competitors, however, Japan's larger companies have survived the "decline" of a sector consumed by fierce international competition. Providing the fullest English-language account of Japanese textiles, Dennis L. McNamara explores the entire sweep of the industry, from factory to high-fashion brokerage to policymaking circle. Tracing the strategies by which the textile industry has survived, he provides a distinctive view of Japanese capitalism in a climate of change. McNamara reconstructs a world riven by the competing interests of state and capital, firm and industry, labor and management, mill and merchant. We encounter giant "mogul" companies and upstart independent "mavericks"—such firms as Toray, Toyobo, Itochu, Tsuzuki, Kondobo, Onward, and Renown—all hustling to restructure for survival. Drawing on extensive interview data as well as recent Japanese and English-language work in political economy and social anthropology, McNamara describes a dynamic of competition between moguls and mavericks in a turbulent business torn by divisions but bound together by compromise. He finds that, despite enormous international pressures, the industry has maintained much of its market share, largely because state bureaucrats and leaders of major firms have managed to create a cooperative politics of adjustment. A corporatist structuring of interests, he concludes, has helped to moderate decline and maintain stability, permitting survival among the moguls without preventing the successful participation of mavericks.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The makers of obi, the elegant and costly sash worn over kimono in Japan, belong to an endangered species. These families of manufacturers, weavers, and other craftspeople centered in the Nishijin weaving district of Kyoto have practiced their demanding craft for generations. In recent decades, however, as a result of declining markets for kimono, they find their livelihood and pride harder to sustain. This book is a poignant exploration of a vanishing world. Tamara Hareven integrates historical research with intensive life history interviews to reveal the relationships among family, work, and community in this highly specialized occupation. Hareven uses her knowledge of textile workers' lives in the United States and Western Europe to show how striking similarities in weavers' experiences transcend cultural differences. These very rich personal testimonies, taken over a decade and a half, provide insight into how these men and women have juggled family and work roles and coped with insecurities. Readers can learn firsthand how weavers perceive their craft and how they interpret their lives and view the world around them. With rare immediacy, The Silk Weavers of Kyoto captures a way of life that is rapidly disappearing.

This book was released on 1963 with total page 620 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A geographic investigation was carried out in Japan to determine the impact of the drastic decline in the Japanese raw silk industry after 1930 upon land utilization and silk reeling in four selected areas of sericultural specialization. Two of these areas were located on the western portion of Kanto Plain: Gumma Ken, the leading prefecture for mulberry acreage and cocoon production during the past-War years, and the Sagami diluvial terrace region of central Kanagawa Ken, the silk industry of which was directly affected by proximity to the Tokyo-Kawasaki-Yokohama conurbation. Two regions were in high, isolated, intermontane basins where silk reeling factories were concentrated: the Suwa and Hagano Basins of Nagano Ken. Variations in the rate of change of mulberry acreage in Gumma Ken seemed most closely related to the degree of pre-Depression emphasis upon sericulture and to variations in changes in reeling capacities within the prefecture. In the Suwa Basin, the degree of food self-sufficiency seemed to be the key factor behind differences in rates of change among areas within the basin. (Author).
