Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is a growing need for cooperation between disciplines, not only to deal with the burning problems of the present, but to study the interaction of societies and their ecosystems in the past. In the 1970s studies in Environmental History were largely confined to North America. Recent years have brought about a vast increase in the "amount, the quality and the scope of scholarship on historical interactions between human (social and economic) de velopment and the biosphere in Europe, both East and West. This broad interest in environmental history may have been heightened and sharpened by the dangers of unbridled technology and unlimited growth, which are becoming more and more manifest. However, for several reasons it is still difficult to become familiar with the different approaches to this new and interdisciplinary of study. Many fields of thought - biology, anthropology, field geography, sociology and history - are involved; the relevant books and articles are hard to find and a coherent theoretical framework is still lacking, because the key issues have yet to be submitted to a thorough scholarly debate. It is hoped that the pre sent volume will make a contribution towards overcoming those shortcomings.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since around 1500 C.E., humans have shaped the global environment in ways that were previously unimaginable. Bringing together leading environmental historians and world historians, this book offers an overview of global environmental history throughout this remarkable 500-year period. In eleven essays, the contributors examine the connections between environmental change and other major topics of early modern and modern world history: population growth, commercialization, imperialism, industrialization, the fossil fuel revolution, and more. Rather than attributing environmental change largely to European science, technology, and capitalism, the essays illuminate a series of culturally distinctive, yet often parallel developments arising in many parts of the world, leading to intensified exploitation of land and water. The wide range of regional studies—including some in Russia, China, the Middle East, India, Southeast Asia, Latin America, Southern Africa, and Western Europe—together with the book's broader thematic essays makes The Environment and World History ideal for courses that seek to incorporate the environment and environmental change more fully into a truly integrative understanding of world history. CONTRIBUTORS: Michael Adas, William Beinart, Edmund Burke III, Mark Cioc, Kenneth Pomeranz, Mahesh Rangarajan, John F. Richards, Lise Sedrez, Douglas R. Weiner

Book excerpt: WARNING: Slow readers, do not read before bed time! Fast readers, go ahead and dig for that happy(?) ending. The Ice Trader starts this intensely suspenseful and suspensefully intense tale deep in the past of our galaxy where the species were all benevolent. Then an outside force entered and destroyed the peace of the entire galaxy. Thousands of years later, one female alien is left upon Earth. Sickened by Earths viruses, germs and diseases, she struggles against all odds to finish her assignment: to prepare Earth for her kind to invade this blue planet for the sake of its abundant water. She and her friend, who died about a decade earlier, had taken many Earth people captive and made them icy meals. However, at the time the ability of the two was not enough to allow the upcoming invasion force to un-terra-form the Earth for their own kind and to make it into a second frigid home world, turning all humans into icy delicacies for the to trade with other species of the galaxy. Tom Andrews, the Earth-man hero, becomes the hero of not only the Earth, but of all species that remained true to their benevolent beginnings. The evil is eradicated and everything, except for the extinguished specie of extreme evil, returns back to normal in more ways than one. The author would recommend 99.999 percent of this book to the general readership of G-rated science fiction. The remainder, though not sexual, involves one rather intense scene on two pages of chapter eight that involves the alien female upon the lap of the yet-to-be hero, inquisitive as to the so-called romance packages that are vagrantly displayed upon Earth television and movies. One particular kind of a television program has her most intrigued: soap operas. Kids grow up too fast in todays culture, and it may not be suitable for pre-teens and some teenagers. There is no sex portrayed within the book, but the author would suggest that parents carefully read and determine their own childs individual ability before allowing them read it. Its on two pages within Chapter 8. The Ice Trader is full of intensity and suspense, but does not lack moments of humor, love, and romance. This is definitely one book not to be missed, and the ending alone is well-worth the read.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a book by people who have had to make decisions which affect the environment in which we all live, decisions which sometimes affect the quality of life of millions. It is not an academic disquisition on how to approach decision-making. Most of the chapters are written by scientists who have had to take action or make recommendations on environmental matters in situations where the data are incomplete or choices hedged by factors beyond scientific resolution; the result is that they have had to resolve dilemmas about the proper way forward in the matter. My brief to the authors was to describe issues with which they had been personally concerned, rather than simply select from the vast range of envir- mental problems 'out there'. The only exception to this was Andrew Brennan (Chapter 1), who is a professional philosopher; I asked him to say something about the processes and errors indulged by environmental decision-makers. There is some overlap between chapters, but this is not extensive. I have made no attempt to eliminate it, because the aim has been to present personal points of view, not a systematic account of environmental problems. Similarly, there are important topics which are not covered. Indeed, a critic would complain that a book on environmental dilemmas which does not deal directly with the crucial divide between development and conservation is almost wholly irrelevant; from one point of view, it could be condemned as fiddling while Rome burns.

Never looking beyond the next winter, his lot was unremarkable and one with little hope of improvement. When an opportunity to earn easy coin falls into Callum’s lap, he readily accepts without thinking of the risk. Wolves and brigands turn out to be the least of his problems, however, for a chance encounter with an old weathered sword puts him at the centre of mysterious events, earns him the attention of a suspicious knight and gains him some unlikely allies. Their journey for answers — one Callum has little choice but to go on — leads him to learn of the terrible responsibilities that come with wielding the sword and of an enemy whose goals will change his world forever. Pulling inspiration from the science fiction and fantasy media of his youth and the lessons learned throughout his life about overcoming adversity, Errant Hope is Damien Jennison's first novel and the first steps in an epic adventure that will sweep you away.

Wild, rebellious, and rakish, Cade's been a bad boy since the day he was born. Don't get him wrong—he's as aware of his faults as he is his virtues, and he thinks he'd be better off without a mate of his own. He'd be a hell of a handful to keep up with. Then a chance encounter brings Cade into Dennis' path. Blind since birth, Dennis prides himself on being plainspoken and knowing how to have a good time. He isn't looking for a soulmate either, but after meeting Cade he's tempted to change his mind. Can the rebels with a cause change their ways, or will they miss their chance?
