Download or read book The Balance Of Power written by Michael Sheehan and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2004-11-11 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The balance of power principle has been central to both the study and practice of international politics for over 300 years. It has guided governments in the conduct of foreign policy and provided a structure for explanations of some of the recurring patterns of international relations. This study examines the various meanings given to the balance of power over the centuries and traces the historical evolution of its theory and practice through steadily more complex forms. It describes the balance principle in practice, both as a guiding light of national foreign policies and as a structural explanation of how the international system operates. The reader is provided with an understanding of the various meanings of the balance principle and the key thinkers and politicians who have influenced its development. The text presents the essence of arguments concerning the morality of the principle as a foreign policy guide and its value as a structural explanation of the fundamental reality of international relations.

This book was released on 1951-01-01 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper explains contribution of the September 1949 devaluations to the solution of Europe’s dollar problem. After the devaluations, the dollar value of exports to the United States from the devaluing countries in Europe recovered from the low levels of the second and third quarters of 1949, but this recovery, which restored exports in the first half of 1950 approximately to the 1948 level should be attributed in large part to the recovery in the US economy rather than to the devaluations. Between the first half of 1949 and the first half of 1950, Europe's dollar imports declined by one-third. Most of this decline occurred, however, between the second and third quarter of 1949, that is, before the devaluations. With imports generally controlled, the effect of the devaluations appeared much more in the reduction of pressure on the control authorities, the substitution of the price mechanism for at least part of the controls as barriers to imports, and the consequent more rational allocation of the relatively scarce dollars among different uses and different users.
Download or read book How Ike Led written by Susan Eisenhower and published by Macmillan + ORM. This book was released on 2020-08-11 with total page 309 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How Dwight D. Eisenhower led America through a transformational time—by a DC policy strategist, security expert and his granddaughter. Few people have made decisions as momentous as Eisenhower, nor has one person had to make such a varied range of them. From D-Day to Little Rock, from the Korean War to Cold War crises, from the Red Scare to the Missile Gap controversies, Ike was able to give our country eight years of peace and prosperity by relying on a core set of principles. These were informed by his heritage and upbringing, as well as his strong character and his personal discipline, but he also avoided making himself the center of things. He was a man of judgment, and steadying force. He sought national unity, by pursuing a course he called the "Middle Way" that tried to make winners on both sides of any issue. Ike was a strategic, not an operational leader, who relied on a rigorous pursuit of the facts for decision-making. His talent for envisioning a whole, especially in the context of the long game, and his ability to see causes and various consequences, explains his success as Allied Commander and as President. After making a decision, he made himself accountable for it, recognizing that personal responsibility is the bedrock of sound principles. Susan Eisenhower's How Ike Led shows us not just what a great American did, but why—and what we can learn from him today.

It illustrates the challenges and successes they have had in the areas of law, politics, education, community healing, language, and art, while suggesting significant options for sustained improvement of individual, family, and community well-being. Written by fifteen Aboriginal scholars, activists, and community leaders, Restoring the Balance combines life histories and biographical accounts with historical and critical analyses grounded in traditional thought and approaches. Book excerpt: There is something wrong with the world. Life and death depend on a delicate balance of the elements within nature. When these elements fall out of balance, the world will pay the price. The element of FIRE gives warmth and safety. The element of WATER gives life. The element of EARTH gives protection, shelter, and food. The element of WIND spreads seeds for crops and controls the climate. All of these are bound to the elements of the heavens LIGHT and DARK. When the balance is altered, then the elements will turn against mankind. For the elements that provide can also be formidable. Fires will spread and destroy all in its path. Floods will wash away homes and crops. Quakes will swallow and destroy settlements. Tornadoes will lash out, and hurricanes will tear through everything. This is the world we live in. If the balance is not restored, there will be no more life to speak of. Two brothers come of age and seek to take the Trial of Ascension. Many in their village have tried, and all have failed. These two brothers are different. Destiny has chosen these two to be the champions of balance.

Book Synopsis The Meaning of Balance of Payments Statistics in an Interdependent World by : Mr.Jack Bame

This book was released on 1994-11-01 with total page 14 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The relevance of the standard measures of international transactions in goods and services as reflected in the fifth edition of the IMF Balance of Payments Manual (BPM) and in the 1993 System of National Accounts (SNA) has been questioned in several recent studies and articles. Alternative measures have been proposed, that either (i) substitute an ownership basis for transactions for the long-established residency basis; (ii) maintain the residency basis but combine net direct, investment income with goods and services; or question the validity of any measures in the form of net balances as a guide to policy. This paper affirms the central role of residency in the international accounts, discusses the supplementary value of alternative proposals, and notes the importance of international efforts to improve and refine the measurement of external transactions based on the principles of the BPM and SNA.
