Book excerpt: This paper discusses some applications of Halphen's method for determining the long range (secular) perturbations for planetary and cometary type orbits. This method of treating secular planetary effects has been suggested by Musen for the determination of the long range perturbations due to the moon for artificial satellite orbits. Two FORTRAN II computer programs incorporating this method are described and representative results are presented. The comparison of results obtained here with those obtained by applying other methods demonstrates the adequacy of this method for minor planets and appropriate artificial satellites. It shows also that considerable saving in computer time can be made in the study of artificial satellite orbits when the short period perturbations are not of interest by using a program based on Halphen's method rather than one based on the use of an unaveraged disturbing function. The program for artificial satellites is given.

Book excerpt: A study of the perturbation of artificial satellite orbits by atmospheric drag forces is important in predicting satellite orbits and lifetimes, and can provide a means of obtaining atmospheric data from satellite observations. The purpose of this paper is to present straightforward and accurate methods of computing drag perturbations, with corrections for influencing factors such as the rotation of the earth. (Author).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the start of the space age more than 50 years ago, various space technology applications - including communication, navigation, and remote sensing - have advanced significantly. To meet the challenges in each application category, special orbits such as geo-stationary, semi-synchronous, Molniya, sun-synchronous, and frozen have been invented or selected. Although a good number of texts on the principles and applications of astrodynamics have been published, a book is needed to summarize the perturbation theories and control, or station keeping, algorithms for understanding the dynamics, stability, and maintenance of those orbits. Applied Orbit Perturbations and Maintenance was written to meet that need. It summarizes, in appropriate technical and mathematical detail, perturbation theories and station keeping algorithms for various types of mission orbits and constellations. Space mission designers/analysts and systems engineers will put this book to great use.

This book provides, for the first time in the history of human satellite development, the complete third order solution of the orbits under all possible disturbances. It describes the theory of satellite orbits, derives the complete solutions of the orbital disturbances, describes the algorithms of orbits determination based on the theory, describes the applications of the theory to the phenomenon of the satellite formation physically. The subjects include: Orbits Motion Equations, Disturbance theory, Solutions of the differential Equations, Algorithms of Orbits determinations, Applications of the theory to the satellite formation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume includes original papers presented at the 4th Symposium on Satellite Dynamics held at the XII Annual Plenary Meeting of COSPAR. At a time where it might be thought that very few problems were left un solved in celestial mechanics, we discover that new and more challenging questions must be answered. The pre cision of observations reaches the centimeter level and physical phenomena which had been disregarded come into play. We need a better treatment of atmospheric drag, radiation forces, and a better knowledge of the earth's gravitational field. Time has to be precisely defined as well as reference systems, including improved values for precision and nutation. The question of resonances introduced by nonzonal harmonics was to be carefully in vestigated. Numerical integration techniques must be optimized and means of controlling their errors improved. Analytical techniques must be made appropriate for com puter processing. Presently existing methods of solu tions of differential equations of interest to celestial mechanics are getting cumbersome as all these new facts come to light. It is clear that entirely new and more effective methods are necessary. These methods must, among other requirements, take into account the essential nonlinear character of the equations. Finally, the mo tion about the center of mass of a satellite is becoming an essential need for the thorough understanding and de scription of the orbital motion.
