Book Synopsis A History of Tasmania by : Henry Reynolds
Download or read book A History of Tasmania written by Henry Reynolds and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2012-01-09 with total page 541 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This captivating work charts the history of Tasmania from the arrival of European maritime expeditions in the late eighteenth century, through to the modern day. By presenting the perspectives of both Indigenous Tasmanians and British settlers, author Henry Reynolds provides an original and engaging exploration of these first fraught encounters. Utilising key themes to bind his narrative, Reynolds explores how geography created a unique economic and migratory history for Tasmania, quite separate from the mainland experience. He offers an astute analysis of the island's economic and demographic reality, by noting that this facilitated the survival of a rich heritage of colonial architecture unique in Australia, and allowed the resident population to foster a powerful web of kinship. Reynolds' remarkable capacity to empathise with the characters of his chronicle makes this a powerful, engaging and moving account of Tasmania's unique position within Australian history.

Book Synopsis A Military History of Victoria, Australia 1803-1945 by : Bob Marmion
Download or read book A Military History of Victoria, Australia 1803-1945 written by Bob Marmion and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2024-02-06 with total page 359 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a case study of possibly the most complex defensive system in Australia between 1803 and 1945. Defending Victoria was such a wide ranging and demanding task that the colony, and later the state, of Victoria was known as the Gibraltar of the South. This book fills a major gap in Australian military and naval history. Using Victoria as a case study, the book shows how defence developed from the idea of a basic sand fort emanating from a fear of French invasion during the early 19th century, into a complex, modern three-dimensional defensive system incorporating air, land and sea defences as well as radar and secret defence technology by the 1940s. The book is not a simple narration of facts and events, but a substantial addition to Australian military history, on account of its extensive analysis of the political, social, economic and technological factors which impacted defence over many decades of the 19th century.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This history of Australian travel and tourism is set in the context of the world scene. The forces which have shaped modern tourism are all traced and then related to the Australian experience. The book deals primarily with the business of tourism, but the way Australian people travelled through the years and experienced tourism is also part of the story. It traces the beginning of tourism, the first attempts at defining it, how ways of measuring it were introduced, how the need for research was acknowledged, and how levels of education relating to hospitality and tourism were progressively raised.
Book Synopsis Cross Channel and Short Sea Ferries by : Lord Ambrose Greenway
Download or read book Cross Channel and Short Sea Ferries written by Lord Ambrose Greenway and published by Seaforth Publishing. This book was released on 2013-11-30 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This new book, beautifully illustrated with a magnificent collection of over 300 photographs, covers the development of a much-loved type of vessel, the 'classic' cross channel or short sea passenger ferry often described as a liner in miniature. From the mid-19th century paddle ferries slowly evolved into screw-driven steamers but it was the advent of the steam turbine and the construction of the railway steamers The Queen and Brighton in 1903 that caught the attention of the world. Similarly-propelled ships multiplied and their use soon spread to the Antipodes, Japan, the Mediterranean and North America. In 1912 Rudolf Diesel's new oil engine went to sea in a cargo ship but it was not until 1925 that it was first employed to widespread acclaim in the Danish North Sea packet Parkeston. In 1934 it made its debut on the English Channel with the Belgian Government's striking 25-knot motor ferry Prins Baudouin. The inexorable increase in car travel from the 1930s led to the development of a new breed of specialised car ferry accessed through bow and stern doors and the proliferation of these after WW2 led to the eventual demise of the 'classic' passenger ferry in the 1960s. With its informative introductory texts and abundant photographs and detailed captions, this book will appeal to ship enthusiasts around the world and to all those who mourn the passing of the golden age of the passenger ship.
