Book excerpt: Excerpt from Report on the Ship-Building Industry of the United States The work of this investigation began in November, 1880, in the city Of Bath, Maine, at which place the greatest number and the largest and finest wooden vessels in this country are built. It was found almost at once that the only means of getting full, reliable, and accurate statistics of the ship-building industry would be by personal visitation of the various ship-buildin g localities of the country. After a thorough study Of the state of the industry in Maine, the whole coast southward to Norfolk, Virginia, was visited, every ship-yard, repair yard, boat-shop, and important establishment being entered on the way. All the different establishments scattered along the Hudson river were then visited, and after that the boat-yards of the Erie canal and the ship-yards of the northern lakes all the way from Oswego, New York, to Manitowoc, Wisconsin. The statistics of the industry at Green Bay, Wisconsin, were obtained by correspondence. Letter-writing was, however, seldom resorted to, as one day spent in a ship-yard in personal contact with builder, engineer, and workmen, and in the inspection Of such books, draughts, and models as one would be permitted to see, was worth four weeks' correspondence by mail. After a visit to the lakes, several weeks were spent on the Monongahela, Allegheny, Kanawha, Ohio, and Mississippi rivers in gathering the statistics Of barge and steamboat building and in learning by actual observation what was going on in the yards. Two months were then spent on the Pacific coast in personal visits to all the different ship-building localities in California and on Puget sound and the Columbia river, Humboldt bay and Coos bay alone excepted, data from the two bays being obtained by correspondence. With regard to the Gulf Of Mexico and the south Atlantic coast, the statistics Of the industry were Obtained through the medium of the local census agents and the local collectors of customs, and were verified by means of data prepared by leading and well-informed shipwrights in Charleston, South Carolina; Key West, Florida; New Orleans, Louisiana; and Galveston, Texas. After referring to the patriotism of the shipyard workers on the North East Coast, Lord Fumess added that with this encouraging Spirit animating our shipyard workers he for one was not pessimistic, and he felt sure that the shipbuilding industry of this country need not fear eclipse, even by our American cousins, who were putting such tremendous energy into the vital task of building ships in the present emergency. As to the future, the role of prophet was a thankless one, and in any case in existing circumstances the future was hard to forecast. He could, however, say with confidence that there was a large volume of work awaiting the shipbuilding industry, and for some years to come it was certain that all their facilities would be kept fully occupied. That the shipbuilding industry will flourish for many years after the cessation of hostilities is almost self-evident when one considers the depletion of tonnage which the war has entailed. But two factors will have to be considered before any definite ideas can be entertained, first the extent to which Government control will be maintained after the war, and second, the effect of the world-wide extension of shipbuilding facilities which were almost non-existent in pro-war days. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ship-Building in Iron and Wood The question, however, whether ships with broadside guns, or ships with Captain Goles's revolving turrets, are to be preferred, still remains unsettled. It will perhaps be found that each of these classes will prove useful in a sphere of its own, and that what ever success may attend Captain Coles's ships, a considerable, if not the largest portion of our future fleet, must still consist of ships with broadside guns. It has been assumed by the advocates of turret ships, in their arguments in their favour, that in revolving turrets alone can guns of very large calibre be used; but it is submitted that this is not necessarily the case if the guns in the broadside of a ship be placed on a traversing platform worked by mechanical appliances; and it may be remarked, that though guns worked on board ship in the way here suggested might not each have individually the same extent of angular traverse as the guns in revolving turrets, yet as all screw ships have to some degree, by judicious management of the helm and the screw, the power of revolving almost on their own axis without going ahead, this objection is very much obviated. It must not be forgotten, also, that the ship to carry a turret, to prevent her being sunk or set on fire, must be as thoroughly protected as the ship to carry broadside guns and though possibly she may be built with her sides of a less height out of the water, yet for a sea-going vessel this advantage has many counter balancing evils.
