Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “What about people who don’t have a family to look out for them, to love them?” Abe asked. “Does their spirit shrivel up and die too?” “Not always, and it never has to come to that,” Sarah responded. “Discovering the love God has for each one of us and accepting the forgiveness that He freely gives can mend a dried-up and dying spirit.” Five years after the turn of the twentieth century, Sarah and her seven children are thriving on their rural Indiana farm. A young girl, physically beaten, emotionally battered, and near starvation, finds refuge in the family’s barn. Sarah takes the child in, bringing along with her a shadow of danger that threatens the family’s sense of security. Sarah goes on high alert to protect her family and leans on God’s love, wisdom, and the light of His grace to guide them through the darkness of fear. Read The Shelter of the Dove’s Wings, book 2 in the continuing saga of the lives of Sarah and her children. The family’s diverse and endearing personalities continue to define them as characters who leap from the pages, make you laugh, and steal your heart. Add a dash of unresolved conflict from book 1, On the Wings of a Dove, and the flavor of an old friend seeking romance, then season with the spices of life ground from small-town living, and you have a recipe for a story that challenges your objectivity while nourishing your faith.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is a common but often unspoken arrogance on the part of outside observers that folk science and traditional knowledge—the type developed by Native communities and tribal groups—is inferior to the “formal science” practiced by Westerners. In this lucidly written and humanistic account of the O’odham tribes of Arizona and Northwest Mexico, ethnobiologist Amadeo M. Rea exposes the limitations of this assumption by exploring the rich ornithology that these tribes have generated about the birds that are native to their region. He shows how these peoples’ observational knowledge provides insights into the behaviors, mating habits, migratory patterns, and distribution of local bird species, and he uncovers the various ways that this knowledge is incorporated into the communities’ traditions and esoteric belief systems. Drawing on more than four decades of field and textual research along with hundreds of interviews with tribe members, Rea identifies how birds are incorporated, both symbolically and practically, into Piman legends, songs, art, religion, and ceremonies. Through highly detailed descriptions and accounts loaded with Native voice, this book is the definitive study of folk ornithology. It also provides valuable data for scholars of linguistics and North American Native studies, and it makes a significant contribution to our understanding of how humans make sense of their world. It will be of interest to historians of science, anthropologists, and scholars of indigenous cultures and folk taxonomy.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Wings of the Dove, Vol. 1 "The wings of the dove," published in 1902, represents to my memory a very old - if I shouldn't perhaps rather say a very young - motive; I can scarce remember the time when the situation on which this log-drawn fiction mainly rests was not vividly present to me. The idea, reduced to its essence, is that a of young person conscious of a great capacity for life, but early stricken and doomed, condemned to die under short respite, while also enamoured of the world; aware moreover of the condemnation and passionately desiring to "put in" before extinction as many of the finer vibrations as possible, and so achieve, however briefly and brokenly, the sense of having lived. Long had I turned it over, standing off from it, yet coming back to it; convinced of what might be done with it, yet seeing the theme as formidable. The image so figured would be, at best, but half the matter; the rest would be all the picture of the struggle involved, the adventure brought about, the gain recorded or the loss incurred, the precious experience some how compassed. These things, I had from the first felt, would require much working-out; that indeed was the case with most things worth working at all; yet there are subjects and subjects, and this one seemed particularly to bristle. It was formed, I judged, to make the wary adventurer walk round and round it - it had in fact a charm that invited and mystified alike that attention; not being somehow what one thought of as a "frank" subject, after the fashion of some, with its elements well in view and its whole character in its face. It stood there with secrets and compartments, with possible treacheries and traps; it might have a great deal to give, but would probably ask for equal services in return, and would collect this debt to the last shilling.
