Book excerpt: Online bullying has become a catchphrase for our day. No longer the traditional bullying in the schoolyard, it casts a much wider net. In The Sharpies, the stereotypes of bully and victim are far more nuanced. When a violent act occurs, suspicion is cast on all the characters, for nothing is as simple as it appears. A documentary crew descends on a suburban city in Ohio, centering on four young women who'd been dubbed the Sharpies ten years before. The interviews disclose the story of three close friends—Andi, Shaye, and Phoebe—who come across a new girl, Mabel. Andi is sharp-witted; Shaye, dramatic and beautiful; and Phoebe, kind and welcoming. Mabel is poor, from a dysfunctional family, and craves their friendship. They attend the same church, and Phoebe invites Mabel to their youth activities. Andi and Shaye soon resent the time Mabel spends with Phoebe and becomes suspicious of the attention she demands of her. Throughout the summer, tensions rise. Mabel relishes the comforts of the Doon family while Andi considers her manipulative and strange. When school begins, things only erode further. Phoebe becomes wary of Mabel as she continues to dominate, but for the most part, they view her as harmless. Yet when the girls are sent to the principal's office with evidence of photos posted from Phoebe's computer, and then later, a violent crime, it begins the onslaught of public opinion and criminal charges. Andi is as passionate about Phoebe's innocence as Mabel is about her own. Also dispersed are recollections from the youth pastor, a police investigator, and school officials, which cast enough doubt about who the real culprit is. There are those who know more to story and those who are willfully blinded to the truth.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Sharpie Book traces the development of the sharpie from its earliest days to the latest plywood-and-epoxy designs; gives comprehensive instructions that can be used to build sharpies of all types and sizes; and includes more than a dozen designs and plans for sharpies from 15 to 40 feet from the likes of Chapelle, Kunhardt, Munroe, Boiger, Clapham, Kirby, and the author. A sharpie is a long, narrow, flat-bottom craft that evolved in the 19th century along the Connecticut shore as an oyster fisherman's boat. An 1880 report by the U.S. Census Bureau characterized the sharpie as "so good a fishing boat and so fast a yacht that it has been adopted in a great many other localities throughout the United States." To this add three more superlatives--easy, cheap, and fast to build--and you have the keys to the sharpie's almost cultlike popularity among backyard boatbuilders.

The heart of the guide is the many short creativity exercises.” —Library Journal Bold and sharp, brilliant and vivid, Sharpie markers can be found in art, office, and stationery supply stores, drugstores, mass-market and crafts chains—almost anywhere writing utensils are sold. Sharpies can be used on virtually any surface, from the traditional (paper and canvas) to the unexpected (fabric, plastic, ceramics, glass, wood, stone, metal). In addition to the original fine point version, Sharpies are produced in five tip widths, several formulations, and in more than thirty colors, plus silver metallic. Their familiarity, accessibility, and clean, bold, dense line—especially the graphic impact that can be achieved with classic black—have made Sharpie markers the go-to medium for creatives of all stripes. In Sharpie Art Workshop, designer, artist, and art director Timothy Goodman explores Sharpie writing products, the materials and supplies that can be used to enhance or modify them, and the range of creative techniques and effects that can be achieved. Through a series of examples and exercises, Goodman demonstrates how to make different kinds of marks, patterns, and images on a variety of surfaces. Inspiring works by noted artists from all over the world who use Sharpie in interesting and innovative ways are also included. Sharpie Art Workshop offers ideas and inspiration to anyone who’s looking to explore the creative potential of this exciting medium. So when you make your mark, what will you create? “Slim and unique, this ‘catalog of inspiration’ enthusiastically celebrates the mighty marker.” —Publishers Weekly

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Paintings by two of Canada's most influential contemporary fine artists Animals with Sharpies is a collection of paintings with hand-lettered texts. In each painting, Michael Dumontier and Neil Farber have depicted an animal holding a Sharpie, ostensibly writing a message. These messages are varied in nature: political and religious tracts, confessions, recipes, arithmetic problems, and more. Above all, these paintings are funny, but they are also startlingly poignant and jarring for the humanness of the suffering and longing depicted in these animals' simple words. Dumontier and Farber, two of the founding members of the highly influential art collective the Royal Art Lodge, have been collaborating on art projects for more than fifteen years. Their collaborative style is unique from that found in their individual works and is respected internationally: they've exhibited together in France, Switzerland, Canada, the United States, Belgium, Spain, England, and Germany. Dumontier and Farber have a strong sense of the absurd, but they are also deeply insightful about the world in which their art is created. Animals with Sharpies is a mixture of new, previously unseen pieces and older pieces.

Book excerpt: The task of researching gangs is fraught with difficulties, central to which are issues of definition and reliance on certain forms of data for analyses. These methodological issues have been acknowledged as limitations in most of the existing research, but they have not been explored as being potentially serious flaws contributing to the proliferation of myth, or as aggravating factors that exacerbate what is essentially a relatively uncomplicated social process. Also unclear from existing studies is the extent to which suppositions about gangs feed moral panics or contribute to the misidentification or over-specification of a problem. This captivating volume focuses on gangs, their formation, identity and behaviour with a view to developing a preventive strategy.

Book excerpt: Aesthetics is no longer the preserve of art historians and philosophers of art. Changes in society, culture, economy, urban dynamics and everyday life, push us towards considering the aesthetic components of traditionally non-aesthetic domains. Today it is not only legitimate but necessary to query the relationship between the social as a cohesive and encompassing form of community and human institutions and the aesthetic, that is the sensual, sensory, or, perhaps better, the sensible. Increasingly the social seems to emerge from the sensible and sentient meaning of objects. The volume SocioAesthetics: Ambience – Imaginary collects scholars from social science, aesthetics, arts, and cultural studies in case-driven debate, ranging from biometrics to luxury commodities, on how a new alignment of aesthetics and the social is possible and what the possible prospects of this may be.
