Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines some of the ways in which sexuality has been described and interpreted in the West. The main models examined are: the Christian view of sex as sinful; the psychoanalytical model, including such notions as the sexual drive, infantile sexuality, the Oedipus complex, and the distinction between male and female sexuality; the 'social construction' model, which proposes that 'sexuality' is a modern concept; and the links between sexuality and spirituality. There is also some consideration of feminist and gay approaches to sexuality, and the complicated subject of male sexuality.

Book excerpt: Is heterosexual sex inherently damaging to women? This is the central question of Straight Sex, Lynne Segal’s account of twentyfive years of feminist thinking on sexuality. Covering the thought of sixties-era sexual liberationists, alongside the ensuing passionate debates over sex and love within feminist and lesbian communities, Segal covers certain shifts toward greater sexual conservatism in the eighties. Straight Sex examines an array of issues, including sex as a subversive activity, the “liberated orgasm,” sex advice literature, gender uncertainties, queer politics, anti-pornography campaigns and the rise of the moral right.

She addresses these issues from both the viewpoints of literary theory and theatre studies, shifting Shakespeare out of straightforward performance studies in order to address questions about his plays and to consider them in the context of current theoretical debates on historiography, post-colonialism and canonicity.

Book excerpt: Spain in the twentieth century gave birth to an array of astounding artistic and literary talent, including the passionately iconoclastic writer Federico Garcia Lorca. But his works were ill received in the homophobic atmosphere of institutionalized Spanish criticism. Because of this atmosphere, even today's critics have effectively marginalized and disavowed intimations of homo-affectivity and homoeroticism in the great Spanish works. This book first appeared in Spain in 1991 as counter-discourse against those prevailing ideological structures. Before its appearance, no significant work had focused on the position of Spanish culture towards homosexuality or on how homosexuality could affect the works of canonical writers. Engaging with homosexuality as an imperative source of meaning in artistic work, this volume rigorously studies the works of Federico Garcia Lorca and several of his marginalized homosexual contemporaries, including Emilio Prados, Luis Cernuda, Juan Gil-Albert, and Salvador Dali. The study relies on the textual evidence presented by these authors to define the homosexual culture as one plagued by the realities of rejection, fear of the law, self-doubts, the lack of an authorized language with which to convey emotions, the awareness of disgust around the individual, the need to accept marginality to find sexual or emotional satisfaction, and the knowledge of one's own social divergence, all of which have an enormous influence on any artist's work. With this new and updated translation, this work offers English-speaking readers the opportunity to focus on formal aspects of literary expressions of homosexuality.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years there has been a massive upsurge in academic, professional and lay interest in mortality. This is reflected in academic and professional literature, in the popular media and in the proliferation of professional roles and training courses associated with aspects of death and dying. Until now the majority of reference material on death and dying has been designed for particular disciplinary audiences and has addressed only specific academic or professional concerns. There has been an urgent need for an authoritative but accessible reference work reflecting the multidisciplinary nature of the field. This Encyclopedia answers that need. The Encyclopedia of Death and Dying consolidates and contextualizes the disparate research that has been carried out to date. The phenomena of death and dying and its related concepts are explored and explained in depth, from the approaches of varied disciplines and related professions in the arts, social sciences, humanities, medicine and the sciences. In addition to scholars and students in the field-from anthropologists and sociologists to art and social historians - the Encyclopedia will be of interest to other professionals and practitioners whose work brings them into contact with dying, dead and bereaved people. It will be welcomed as the definitive death and dying reference source, and an essential tool for teaching, research and independent study.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume explores the social constructions of sexuality in South Africa as articulated in the tensions between margin and mainstream during the transition to democracy. The nuances between how people experience their own sexuality, how that sexuality differs over time, and how they speak about it are discussed in the context of the homosexual communities of South Africa. Using the hierarchy of heteronormativity, this work argues that centralized constructions of sexuality are generally taken for granted, and tend to gain invisibility through their pervasiveness, while marginalized social positions are often visibly pathologized.

Book excerpt: Lesbians have lived through the porn wars, the sex wars and the dildo wars but, asks Tamsin Wilton, isn't it time to start making love, not war? For all the hype and visibility around lesbians in the mass media, lesbian sex is under attack from all sides -- a consequence of the resurgence of the far Right, the revival of religious fundamentalism, the increase in fascist activity and the construction of 'family values' as a political and social totem. While the combined might of the political and religious Right attempt to marginalize and eradicate lesbian sexuality, a number of feminists have joined them. This controversial book is primarily an exploration of political struggles around lesbian sex within lesbian communities, which sets out to expose the profoundly damaging influence of the lesbian sex 'police', and to argue for unity between feminists and queers who share a political commitment to transform the institution of gender itself. Queer feminist Tamsin Wilton has written this book as an act of resistance, 'tomcatting around the field of sex, marking out the territory for the dykes'. Bringing a forthright, fresh perspective to debates around Lesbian sadomasochism, butch-femme, dildos, lesbian porn and the lesbian sex prefects, she draws interesting conclusions. Is the dildo-wielding dyke a victim of false consciousness, or the ultimate radical feminist rebel? Who is the real 'fascist', the SM dyke or the revolutionary feminist who castigates her?
