Book excerpt: The Uncommercial Traveller is a collection of literary sketches and reminiscences written by Charles Dickens, published in 1860-1861.In 1859 Dickens founded a new journal called All the Year Round and the Uncommercial Traveller articles would be among his main contributions. He seems to have chosen the title and persona of the Uncommercial Traveller as a result of a speech he gave on 22 December 1859 to the Commercial Travellers' School London in his role as honorary chairman and treasurer. The persona sits well with a writer who liked to travel, not only as a tourist, but also to research and report what he found visiting Europe, America and giving book readings throughout Britain. He did not seem content to rest late in his career when he had attained wealth and comfort and continued travelling locally, walking the streets of London in the mould of the flâneur, a 'gentleman stroller of city streets'. He often suffered from insomnia and his night-time wanderings gave him an insight into some of the hidden aspects of Victorian London, details of which he also incorporated into his novels.

Book excerpt: The Seven Poor travellers is a classic Charles Dickens Christmas short story full of love, loss, regret, and reuniting. The story begins by relating the hardships the English were enduring at the time of the writing and tells of a dear soul who had endowed an inn for poor travelers to give room and board to destitute visitors for one night. Dickens ironically points out that the travelers got about 1/30th of the value, while the management and lawyers of the trust got the other 29/30ths. The narrator tells a story about Richard Doubledick, saved by an officer friend, after a Christmas Eve feast, who became his friend for life until his death at Waterloo. Richard later met the French officer who killed his friend and used forgiveness to get over it, which lead to them and their children becoming lifelong friends. This is a classic story about generations of salvation and friendship.

Book excerpt: The story starts in a charity hospice in Rochester-a place that Dickens himself was familiar with from his own childhood. According to the will of the founder, Richard Watts, at Christmas the hospice must provide lodgings and entertainment for one night as well as some money to six poor people, an amount that is substantial enough to allow the travelers to buy a hearty meal. On Christmas Eve there are six people in the inn and the novels is composed from the six stories of the travelers who find shelter in the hospice, plus the narrator himself. The stories told by the travelers and the meal shared create a kind of harmony and a sense of community between the seven people-they all leave the inn the following day and life will probably take them to different places, but they will all cherish the memory of this one serene evening.

Book excerpt: How is this book unique? Font adjustments & biography included Unabridged (100% Original content) Illustrated About The Seven Poor Travellers by Charles Dickens A short and inspirational work by Charles Dickens written as a Christmas story. Outshined by Dickens much more well known Christmas story, this story has received scant notice. Written in the first person, Dickens tell of being a "poor traveller," and discovering a humble inn during his travels. Set up as a charitable hostel by a gentlemen deceased over a century previously, the inn offers to "six poor traveller's," true in heart, free lodging for one night plus enough money to purchase a simple meal. After satisfying himself of the bona fides of this charitable work, the "seventh poor traveller," as Dickens refers to the narrator, determines to contribute his own gift to his fellow "traveller's," it being Christmas Eve. Securing a sumptuous meal for the holy occasion, and preparing his own secret recipe of wassail, he shares a most satisfying Christmas Eve meal with his fellows, topping off the night with a personal story that befits a Christ-like life of humble service to the meanest among us. The story told, and following activities, serve to illustrate well the concept Dickens wishes to drive home, which is that at best we are all "poor traveller's" together in this life, and make the best of it all by sharing with a true heart whatever good and honest fare comes our way. Without the burden of judging harshly those whom we encounter who seem beneath our station, true happiness may be achieved before we, too, depart this veil of tears.

Download or read book Best of Dickens: The Chimes (Illustrated) written by Charles Dickens and published by SeaWolf Press. This book was released on 2020-10 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A nice edition of this Christmas classic with 20 original illustrations. The Chimes was first published in 1844, one year after A Christmas Carol. It is the second in Charles Dickens' series of "Christmas books," five novellas with strong social and moral messages that he published during the 1840s. In addition to A Christmas Carol and The Chimes, the Christmas books include The Cricket on the Hearth, The Battle of Life, and The Haunted Man and the Ghost's Bargain. It was written during Dickens' year-long visit to Italy. Dickens was struck one day by the clamor of the Genoese bells audible from the villa where they were staying. The chimes are old bells in the church on whose steps Trotty Veck plies his trade. The book is divided into four parts named "quarters", after the quarter chimes of a striking clock.
