Book excerpt: Differentiated book- It has a historical context with research of the time-The Seven Poor Travelers by Charles Dickens.Starting with the Christmas bonus number for 1854, The Seven Poor Travelers, Dickens put the stories into a general framework by adding special openings and endings and providing brief links between the segments. Dickens himself usually wrote two of the segments (although he did write one, sometimes three). He always set the general theme, and usually wrote the entire framework. At first, the setting was sober and utilitarian (although the dramatic situation was often whimsical); The typical strategy was to gather a group of strangers and have them out of their time telling stories (the dramatic situation generally required such fun). In the latest Christmas issues, Dickens paid more attention to the setting and creating a realistic and sometimes suspenseful situation for the narrative. The Seven Poor Travelers takes place on Christmas Eve in Rochester at the charity hospice founded in 1579 by Richard Watts, a royal hospice that Dickens knew well from his childhood days. According to Watts's will, his hospice was to provide six poor travelers (provided they were not rogues or supervisors) with free accommodation and entertainment for one night and four pence. In the opening section of The Seven Poor Travelers, titled 'The First', the narrator, he brings travelers up to seven,

Book excerpt: In his 1852 novel Basil, Wilkie Collins' narrator concludes that "those ghastly heart-tragedies laid open before me ... are not to be written, but ... are acted and reacted, scene by scene, year by year, in the secret theatre of home." Taking this memorable quote as her starting point, Jenny Bourne Taylor demonstrates how Victorian psychology is central to an understanding of the complexity and vitality of Collins' fiction, exploring the boundaries of mind/body, sanity/madness, and consciousness/unconsciousness. Taylor's depth of research and thoughtful analysis establishes the importance of Collins as a writer whose fiction challenges the cultural constructions of the nineteenth century, and proves "the impossibility of drawing a precise boundary between fictional and psychological codes". Going beyond conventional discussion of the sensation genre, here we see the depth and range of Collins' writing and gain an understanding of its relation to Victorian medical thought. The study includes close readings of five novels: Basil (1852), The Woman in White (1859-60), No Name (1862-3), Armadale (1864-66), and The Moonstone (1868). Consideration is also given to Man and Wife (1870), The New Magdalen (1872), The Law and the Lady (1875), Jezebel's Daughter (1879), Heart and Science (1882-3), The Fallen Leaves (1879), and The Legacy of Cain (1889). CONTENTS Foreword by Andrew Mangham Introduction - Collins as a sensation novelist Chapter 1 - The psychic and the social: Boundaries of identity in nineteenth-century psychology Chapter 2 - Nervous fancies of hypochondriacal bachelors - Basil, and the problems of modern life Chapter 3 - The Woman in White - Resemblance and difference - patience and resolution Chapter 4 - Skins to jump into - Femininity as masquerade in No Name Chapter 5 - Armadale - The sensitive subject as palimpsest Chapter 6 - Lost parcel or hidden soul? Book excerpt: The Seven Poor Travellers is one of Charles Dickens's Christmas stories that was first published in the 1854 Christmas issue of the Victorian Novelist's periodical Household Words. It follows the adventures of six travelers in addition to the story of the seventh traveler who is none but the narrator himself. The narrative is divided into three chapters. In the first chapter entitled "In the Old City of Rochester," the seven heroes meet at the old Richard Watts's Charity and start telling stories to each other at a Christmas dinner. In the second and most important chapter entitled "The Story of Richard Doubledick," the narrator entertains his companions by telling a story within a story whose hero is a strange twenty-two-year-old man who comes to Rochester to fall in love, enlist in the military and become the most "dissipated and reckless soldier in Chatham Barracks." The final chapter of the booklet is entitled "The Road." It speaks about the narrator's journey home the following morning as each of the seven travelers goes his own way. Dickens's conclusion of the story is skillfully woven in a way to let the readers long for more Christmas dinners and for more Christmas stories.

Book excerpt: The story starts in a charity hospice in Rochester--a place that Dickens himself was familiar with from his own childhood. According to the will of the founder, Richard Watts, at Christmas the hospice must provide lodgings and entertainment for one night as well as some money to six poor people, an amount that is substantial enough to allow the travelers to buy a hearty meal. On Christmas Eve there are six people in the inn and the novels is composed from the six stories of the travelers who find shelter in the hospice, plus the narrator himself. The stories told by the travelers and the meal shared create a kind of harmony and a sense of community between the seven people--they all leave the inn the following day and life will probably take them to different places, but they will all cherish the memory of this one serene evening.
