Book Synopsis A History of the AbaThembu People from Earliest Times to 1920 by : Jongikhaya Mvenene
Download or read book A History of the AbaThembu People from Earliest Times to 1920 written by Jongikhaya Mvenene and published by African Sun Media. This book was released on 2020-10-02 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is an account of the history of the abaThembu, from the reign of uKumkani Nxeko in c.1650 to the death of uKumkani Dalindyebo in 1920. The importance of this cut‑off date lies in the fact that uKumkani Dalindyebo’s reign was characterised by relative stability compared to those of his predecessors. His prestige, however, was demeaned by the Department of Native Affairs’ Secretary whose instruction was that uKumkani Dalindyebo should not be addressed as a ‘paramount chief’ as that title applied exclusively to the government, thereby strengthening the government’s position and elevating it to be above customary law. AbaThembuland was – and still is – central to the history of the former Transkei region and South Africa. Not only does it form part of the former Transkei region, but it also constitutes South Africa, and so divisions, conflicts, developments and/or underdevelopments in abaThembuland inevitably affected not only the former Transkei region but also the greater part of South Africa in no small measure. Thus, the history of abaThembuland and the divisions thereof overlap with the history of the former Transkei region and South Africa.

This book was released on 2021-05-06 with total page 558 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a visual and narrative history of two communities, Māori and Pākehā, during a hundred years of settlement in New Zealand. It reveals how the two cultures saw their history through very different eyes: for Pākehā, it was a story of establishing an ‘English island’ in the Pacific; for Māori, a tale of loss and exclusion. But by setting out these conflicting understandings of the past, the book also seeks to bridge cultural differences through the sharing of knowledge. Written by three leading historians and lavishly illustrated, it is a stunning presentation of New Zealand’s history.

Book Synopsis Christianity in South Africa by : David Chidester
Download or read book Christianity in South Africa written by David Chidester and published by Greenwood. This book was released on 1997-08-07 with total page 510 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In all its diversity, Christianity has been a powerful force in South African life. From the history of colonial missions, through the development of denominations, to the emergence of African initiated churches, Christianity has assumed a variety of distinctively South African forms. This comprehensive guide offers detailed reviews of over 600 works that have established the importance of Christianity in South African history, society, and religious experience. Of interest to scholars and students of religious studies, cultural anthropology, African Studies, and history, this volume, together with African Traditional Religion in South Africa and Islam, Hinduism, and Judaism in South Africa (both Greenwood, 1997), will become the standard reference work on South African religions. In each section—Christian Missions, Christian Denominations, and African Initiated Churches—an introductory essay identifies significant themes in the literature. The annotations are concise yet detailed essays, written in an engaging and accessible style and supported by an exhaustive index. The book therefore provides a full and complex profile of Christianity as a religious tradition in South Africa.
