Book excerpt: In a world where we’re more connected than ever, why is it that we’re also more lonely? Dip into this anthology of classic writing to reclaim the pleasure of your own company. Part of the Macmillan Collector’s Library; a series of stunning pocket size classics. These beautiful books make perfect gifts or a treat for any book lover. This edition is edited and introduced by writer and academic, Zachary Seager. The Art of Solitude shows some of the myriad ways in which people throughout history have understood their experiences of solitary life, or have counselled others to benefit from solitude. It contains poetry, essays, autobiographical pieces and short stories from writers such as Virginia Woolf, Edgar Allen Poe, Emily Dickinson and Ralph Waldo Emerson. These diverse works can teach us how to think in freedom, how to enjoy a profound inner life and how best to cope with the fact that, as the novelist Joseph Conrad put it, we live, as we dream – alone. Above all, they show how we might truly connect with ourselves and, in the process, how we can meaningfully connect with those around us, including the earth itself. Looked at in this way, solitude is always focused both outward and inward, towards the self and towards the world. The cure for loneliness is, in the end, the art of solitude.

Book excerpt: You may ask, "What is the importance of solitude?", and the answer to that question is legion. It has been said that ninety-five percent of our human species are takers, and only five percent of us are givers. In anyone's calculation, that is very extreme, and...questionable, but...perhaps we should ask our individual self, am I a taker or a giver? If we study the great achievers and givers throughout history, whether they were inventors, scientists, philosophers, artists, authors, teachers and many others who have contributed greatly to the benefit of mankind, we will learn that most all of them, created their contributions IN SOLITUDE. Perhaps you are an author or a painter. Can you write a book or create a painting in the midst of other people? No... I think not. You must have solitude to think, gather your ideas and then...create. And that does not diminish the joy and importance of spending quality time with other people. It's about priority, balance and discipline in our lives at certain times. But if you know of anyone that you admire and respect that is a creator, you will, no doubt, learn that what they created, which you greatly enjoyed and appreciated, it had been created in solitude, where there were no interruptions or disturbances. IN SOLITUDE is where we go to pray and meditate, and...to be able to connect and commune with the Spirit world. Perhaps we have all heard of 'the still small voice.' And that 'voice' cannot be heard in the midst of disruptions, noise and confusion. It has been said that prayer is us talking to Great Spirit/ Creator/God, and Instinct/Intuition is Great Spirit/Creator/God talking to us, and again, that must take place in solitude. To be a truly Spiritual person, which entails listening to, understanding, hearing and connecting with the Spiritual realm, that must take place in solitude, in order to achieve the greatest benefit. One of mankind's greatest fears is the "unknown." And many people are afraid of being alone; they feel safer around others, but whenever they experience the great benefits, they receive from being in solitude, they will soon seek it at every opportunity, and that need not dismiss quality time spent with family and friends. Perhaps one of the greatest gifts we can receive from being in solitude is when we are able to see, feel, and truly appreciate some of the smaller things around us, whether it's a small flower by the sidewalk, or the bird in a tree, but by being in a crowd or with a group of other people, we overlook or totally miss those things that great thinkers, and creators see, feel, appreciate, love, and incorporate into their wonderful creations which we enjoy and appreciate. Being in solitude does not mean that we should not be around and spend time with other people, and it does not mean being lonely; basically, in solitude means where great and important lessons are learned, and inspiration and creations are created. Loneliness and solitude seem very similar on the outside, but the only characteristic both have in common is the state of physical solitude.

Book excerpt: The poet and author’s “beautiful . . . wise and warm” journal of time spent in her New Hampshire home alone with her garden, her books, the seasons, and herself (Eugenia Thornton, Cleveland Plain Dealer). “Loneliness is the poverty of self; solitude is richness of self.” —May Sarton May Sarton’s parrot chatters away as Sarton looks out the window at the rain and contemplates returning to her “real” life—not friends, not even love, but writing. In her bravest and most revealing memoir, Sarton casts her keenly observant eye on both the interior and exterior worlds. She shares insights about everyday life in the quiet New Hampshire village of Nelson, the desire for friends, and need for solitude—both an exhilarating and terrifying state. She likens writing to “cracking open the inner world again,” which sometimes plunges her into depression. She confesses her fears, her disappointments, her unresolved angers. Sarton’s garden is her great, abiding joy, sustaining her through seasons of psychic and emotional pain. Journal of a Solitude is a moving and profound meditation on creativity, oneness with nature, and the courage it takes to be alone. Both uplifting and cathartic, it sweeps us along on Sarton’s pilgrimage inward. This ebook features an extended biography of May Sarton.

But why of late do serenity and peace of mind seem further from reach than ever before? The world appears very busy, and finding moments to catch up with ourselves looks to be almost impossible. Something has occurred to change life's circumstances, to make peaceful, restorative time terribly elusive. Alonetime is a great protector of the self and the human spirit. Many in society have railed against it. Some have overused its healing potential. Others have kept it as a special resource both knowingly and unknowingly. ... (Yet) the only way we shall achieve ... ideal love is if we are allowed to flower in the due course and pace of our inner life. Whether or not we were fortunate in our growing up to blossom this way, plenty of time -- alone-times -- awaits us now to make the necessary readjustments.

Book excerpt: From the lonely, rain-swept piazzas to silent rows of empty gondolas, one of the world's busiest and most beautiful cities lies frozen in time in this stunningly illustrated book that captures the city without people. Whether you're a first-time tourist or seasoned traveler, it's virtually impossible to find yourself alone in Venice. The city's many architectural splendors, its winding canals, ancient piazzas and charming markets are marvelous to visit--and crowded with people in every season. In these hauntingly beautiful photographs, Crhistopher Thomas takes readers on a solitary tour of the city Lord Byron once called the Most Serene Republic. As he did with his previous volume, New York Sleeps, Thomas uses long-term exposures and a now discontinued large-format Polaroid film to capture places bereft of humans in the early hours of the day. Readers can almost feel the ghosts of Titian, Shakespeare, Vivaldi, and Henry James wandering these canals and cobblestones; and they can experience the city as it was intended to be: an ingeniously planned, aesthetically delightful oasis of beauty, light, shadows--and serenity.

Book excerpt: In Koch's Solitude, both solitude and engagement emerge as primary modes of human experience, equally essential for human completion. This work draws upon the vast corpus of literary reflections on solitude, especially Lao Tze, Sappho, Plotinus, Augustine, Petrarch, Montaigne, Goethe, Shelley, Emerson, Thoreau, Whitman and Proust. "Koch uses the work of philosophers, historians, and writers, as well as texts such as the Bible, to show what solitude is and isn't, and what being alone can do to and for the individual. Interesting for its literary scope and its conclusions about all the good true solitude can bring us." —Booklist "Reading this book is like dipping into many minds, fierce and gentle. The author reveals his long study of great philosophers, and interprets their thoughts through the lens of his own experience with solitude. He traces our early brushes with solitude and the fear it can engender, then the craving for solitude that comes with full, adult lives." —NAPRA Review

Book excerpt: One of the twentieth century’s enduring works, One Hundred Years of Solitude is a widely beloved and acclaimed novel known throughout the world and the ultimate achievement in a Nobel Prize–winning career. The novel tells the story of the rise and fall of the mythical town of Macondo through the history of the Buendía family. Rich and brilliant, it is a chronicle of life, death, and the tragicomedy of humankind. In the beautiful, ridiculous, and tawdry story of the Buendía family, one sees all of humanity, just as in the history, myths, growth, and decay of Macondo, one sees all of Latin America. Love and lust, war and revolution, riches and poverty, youth and senility, the variety of life, the endlessness of death, the search for peace and truth—these universal themes dominate the novel. Alternately reverential and comical, One Hundred Years of Solitude weaves the political, personal, and spiritual to bring a new consciousness to storytelling. Translated into dozens of languages, this stunning work is no less than an account of the history of the human race.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thoughtful and eloquent, as timely (or timeless) now as when it was originally published in 1956, Thoughts in Solitude addresses the pleasure of a solitary life, as well as the necessity for quiet reflection in an age when so little is private. Thomas Merton writes: "When society is made up of men who know no interior solitude it can no longer be held together by love: and consequently it is held together by a violent and abusive authority. But when men are violently deprived of the solitude and freedom which are their due, the society in which they live becomes putrid, it festers with servility, resentment and hate." Thoughts in Solitude stands alongside The Seven Storey Mountain as one of Merton's most uring and popular works. Thomas Merton, a Trappist monk, is perhaps the foremost spiritual thinker of the twentiethcentury. His diaries, social commentary, and spiritual writings continue to be widely read after his untimely death in 1968.
