Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Separate Technical High School Nor would it seem proper to include under the head of the separate technical high schools those which boast of complete manual-training departments, but whose courses still are dminated by the universities and the colleges. Very few, even of the schools terming themselves technical high schools, have been able to divorce themselves from a curriculum which has for its fundamentals those studies usually pre scribed in the literary schools and which devote less than 2 5 per cent of the time to handwork. A glance at the course of study of the manual training high schools shows a course including English, mathematics, a language (either classical or modern), some history and science, plus shopwork and drawing unrelated to the rest of the course. In most of these schools even technical subjects have very little interdependence one with the other. Such schools should not be included under the head of separate technical high schools. Those pf the above type being then eliminated, he schools that could be included would be only those which have a course of study where English, mathematics, science, shopwork, and drawing are the fundamentals and where the foreign languages and history play less important parts. Of schools of this nature there are comparatively few in the United States. Among the best examples are the related schools in San Francisco, namely, the California School of Mechanical Arts and the Wilmerding School of Industrial Arts for Boys. Another school of this nature is the Technical High School of Cleveland. Certain courses in the Technical High School in Chicago and the Stuyvesant High School in New York would entitle these institutions also to representation. In some of these courses the aim seems to have been not so much to meet college requirements as to fit boys and girls to go out into industrial life. In this connection the Williamson Free School of Trades, in Penn sylvania, might also be included, as the academic work of the school is at least of high-school grade and the technical courses are scarcely to be approached by those of any of the public technical high schools. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The British created a system wherein the social identity of civil servants clearly influenced their position on official matters. This privileged class set the tone for major policy decisions affecting all members of society. Savage addresses this social construction of power by analyzing the social origins and career patterns of higher-level civil servants as a backdrop for investigating the way four different social service ministries formulated policies between the two World Wars: the Board of Education, the Ministry of Agriculture, the Ministry of Labour, and the Ministry of Health.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: • Choice 1988 Outstanding Academic Book • Named one of the Best Business Books of 1988 by USA TodayA veteran reporter of American labor analyzes the spectacular and tragic collapse of the steel industry in the 1980s. John Hoerr's account of these events stretches from the industrywide barganing failures of 1982 to the crippling work stoppage at USX (U.S. Steel) in 1986-87. He interviewed scores of steelworkers, company managers at all levels, and union officials, and was present at many of the crucial events he describes. Using historical flashbacks to the origins of the steel industry, particularly in the Monongahela Valley of southwestern Pennsylvania, he shows how an obsolete and adversarial relationship between management and labor made it impossible for the industry to adapt to shattering changes in the global economy.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Intergenerational income mobility is of great societal importance due to its relevance to equal socio-economic opportunity and future economic efficiency. In her book Dr Hou explores the potential role of education policy in reducing intergenerational transmission of poverty and promoting intergenerational income mobility in China. Her research investigates the extent to which intergenerational income persists in China, the mechanisms behind intergenerational inequality, and premises for policy intervention. The interaction between families, labour markets, and public policies that structure a child’s opportunities and determine the extent to which income is related to family background are discussed in detail. The book comprises of three separate empirical studies examining the relationship between parents’ income and the long-term welfare of their children for two birth cohorts; the role education plays in the intergenerational income relationship; and possible policy intervention channels to facilitate intergenerational income mobility. The lessons learnt from the empirical studies in this book offer the basis for a discussion of current educational policies and provide guidance for developing more appropriate public policies to promote intergenerational income mobility in China in the future. This book contributes to the international discussion by providing evidence in Chinese context, and also provides guidance for policymakers attempting to develop more appropriate public policies to promote intergenerational income mobility in China.

This study looks at the parity and prestige factors in English secondary school education and initially written in 1955. It looks at the desired aim of the secondary school as ensuring that every child receives the education most suited to his or her capacities and interests, irrespective of social class or occupational destiny, with the reality that some school may acquire prestige from the social standing either of the majority of his pupils or from the occupations for which they to be prepared.
