Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1994. What is a self-reliant manager? The self-reliant manager is one who can grow an organization by exploiting his or her role in the management of people. Not every manager is involved in top-level decision-making and the development of global strategies. Every manager is, however, by being involved in managing the people in an organization, empowered to take the company forward. The book covers key topics such as empowerment, motivation, performance appraisal, the development of management learning systems, environmental awareness, ethics, and management style. It presents a model to show how managers can improve their own effectiveness. To succeed with people, managers need to understand themselves, the internal framework of their organization and the external environment in which their business operates. They have become self-reliant to develop the leadership and vision needed to influence their organization.

Global trade has transformed drastically and will only continue to do so as countries vote on export and import decisions based on global competition. Many countries would be compelled to reconsider multi-country trade deals as internal interests will push and dictate them. More important than ever, it is imperative that self-reliant economies be investigated specifically in the post-COVID-19 era in order to understand the impacts made on international ties and trade agreements. Transitioning From Globalized to Localized and Self-Reliant Economies is a comprehensive reference source that looks at how economies are now moving towards becoming self-reliant, especially in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic. Covering topics such as digitalization, technological innovation, and personal finance, this is a beneficial resource for economists, executives, managers, government officials, policymakers, entrepreneurs, IT departments, human resource managers, CEOs, students, researchers, and academicians.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the Complementary Management Model. Building on extensive theoretical considerations on management and leadership, it outlines the seven elements of the model: the management actors (1) jointly fulfil management tasks (2) serving two management functions (3) by performing management routines (4) and applying formal management instruments (5), which requires management resources (6) and management unit structures (7). The key mechanisms of Complementary Management include the primacy of employee self-leadership, compensatory interventions of the line manager in the absence of such self-steerage, and active roles for senior managers and HR advisors in the management/leadership process. The Complementary Leadership Model is practice-oriented and offers a coherent conceptual basis for corporate models (= principles and guidelines) of management and leadership. The book describes the process for developing and introducing such guidelines and backs this up with project recommendations. It is aimed at all those interested in theory, but especially HR professionals and managers who shape management and leadership in their organizations and are looking for compelling theoretical foundations for their work.

Book excerpt: The book brings out an encyclopaedic picture of the potential areas of transformative Indian agriculture through innovations in science, technology, institutional and policy affairs directed in building a self-reliant India (Atmanirbhar Bharat). The book has addressed the challenges to make India free from hunger, poverty and undernutrition, and suggested interventions with focus on all-inclusiveness and sustainability, peace and prosperity, and resilience to climate and other volatilities. Most of these propositions are analogous to the Sustainable Development Goals – Agenda 2030, which India has committed to achieve. The book especially covers critical needs for development on different fragile ecosystems such as coastal, desert, hill, ravine and other marginal ecosystems. The book will act as very useful guidance for the policy makers, and development communities, and a reference document to academicians as well. It originates from a deficiency of precipitation that results in a water shortage for some activity or some group. Africa has suffered the most dramatic impacts from drought during the past several decades the recent droughts in the southern and eastern portions of the continent are testimony to that fact. However, the vulnerability of all nations to extended periods of water shortage has been underscored again and again during this same time period. In the past decade alone, droughts have occurred with considerable frequency and severity in most of the developed and developing world. Significant parts of North and South America, Australia, Europe, and Asia have been plagued recently by extended periods of severe drought, often resulting in far-reaching economic, social, and environmental consequences. In the western United States, for example, vast areas are facing the prospects of a sixth or seventh consecutive year of drought in 1993. Concern by members ofthe scientific and policy communities about the inability of governments to respond in an effective and timely manner to drought and its associated impacts exists worldwide. Numerous "calls for action" for improved drought planning and management have been issued by national governments, professional organizations, intergovernmental organizations, nongovernmental organizations, and others. The United Nations' International Decade for Natural Disaster Reduction (lDNDR) is yet another example of an international call for action to reduce the impacts that result from drought and other natural hazards.

Book excerpt: Understanding Organization Through Culture and Structure: Relational and Other Lessons From the African American Organization presents an innovative view of organizations and the communication processes that constitute them. Arguing that human beings are communicatively embedded in their cultures, Anne Maydan Nicotera and Marcia J. Clinkscales, working with Felicia R. Walker, examine issues concerning task and relational orientations and the ways they and other cultural dimensions connect with organizational structure and function for predominantly African American organizations. Utilizing the results of their own research on organizations, they develop a set of humanistically-based models that illustrate how hidden cultural processes suffuse organizational life and are manifest through communication. Emphasizing the development of alternative theories and models of organizing which are rooted in African-American culture, such as team-based versus hierarchy-based interactions, this book explores such organizational functions as leadership and management, power, authority and control, communication and interpersonal dynamics, and cultural identity and human development. Applying their findings in a broader analysis of contemporary practices in organizational restructuring, the authors present research that serves as the foundation for generating several emergent models with significant implications for organizational systems. Understanding Organization Through Culture and Structure stimulates and inspires current researchers of organizational communication, and is certain to raise greater awareness of the operation of culture in organizing. The text is intended for scholars and students in organizational communication, management, organizational psychology, African studies, and related areas.
