Book Synopsis The Cybersecurity Dilemma by : Ben Buchanan
Download or read book The Cybersecurity Dilemma written by Ben Buchanan and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2017-02-01 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why do nations break into one another's most important computer networks? There is an obvious answer: to steal valuable information or to attack. But this isn't the full story. This book draws on often-overlooked documents leaked by Edward Snowden, real-world case studies of cyber operations, and policymaker perspectives to show that intruding into other countries' networks has enormous defensive value as well. Two nations, neither of which seeks to harm the other but neither of which trusts the other, will often find it prudent to launch intrusions. This general problem, in which a nation's means of securing itself threatens the security of others and risks escalating tension, is a bedrock concept in international relations and is called the 'security dilemma'. This book shows not only that the security dilemma applies to cyber operations, but also that the particular characteristics of the digital domain mean that the effects are deeply pronounced. The cybersecurity dilemma is both a vital concern of modern statecraft and a means of accessibly understanding the essential components of cyber operations.

Book Synopsis Security and Stability in the New Space Age by : Brad Townsend
Download or read book Security and Stability in the New Space Age written by Brad Townsend and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-07-12 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the drivers behind great power security competition in space to determine whether realistic strategic alternatives exist to further militarization. Space is an area of increasing economic and military competition. This book offers an analysis of actions and events indicative of a growing security dilemma in space, which is generating an intensifying arms race between the US, China, and Russia. It explores the dynamics behind a potential future war in space and investigates methods of preventing an arms race from an international relations theory and military-strategy standpoint. The book is divided into three parts: the first section offers a broad discussion of the applicability of international relations theory to current conditions in space; the second is a direct application of theory to the space environment to determine whether competition or cooperation is the optimal strategic choice; the third section focuses on testing the hypotheses against reality, by analyzing novel alternatives to three major categories of space systems. The volume concludes with a study of the practical limitations of applying a strategy centered on commercialization as a method of defusing the orbital security dilemma. This book will be of interest to students of space power, strategic studies, and international relations.
Book Synopsis Alliance Politics by : Glenn H. Snyder
Download or read book Alliance Politics written by Glenn H. Snyder and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2007 with total page 436 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Glenn H. Snyder creates a theory of alliances by deductive reasoning about the international system, by integrating ideas from neorealism, coalition formation, bargaining, and game theory, and by empirical generalization from international history. Using cases from 1879 to 1914 to present a theory of alliance formation and management in a multipolar international system, he focuses particularly on three cases--Austria-Germany, Austria-Germany-Russia, and France-Russia--and examines twenty-two episodes of intra-alliance bargaining. Snyder develops the concept of the alliance security dilemma as a vehicle for examining influence relations between allies. He draws parallels between alliance and adversary bargaining and shows how the two intersect. He assesses the role of alliance norms and the interplay of concerts and alliances. His great achievement in Alliance Politics is to have crafted definitive scholarly insights in a way that is useful and interesting not only to the specialist in security affairs but also to any reasonably informed person trying to understand world affairs.
Book Synopsis After Engagement by : Jacques deLisle
Download or read book After Engagement written by Jacques deLisle and published by Brookings Institution Press. This book was released on 2021-04-20 with total page 390 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: " From cooperation to a new cold war: is this the future for today's two great powers? U.S. policy toward China is at an inflection point. For more than a generation, since the 1970s, a near-consensus view in the United States supported engagement with China, with the aim of integrating China into the U.S.-led international order. By the latter part of the 2010s, that consensus had collapsed as a much more powerful and increasingly assertive China was seen as a strategic rival to theUnited States. How the two countries tackle issues affecting the most important bilateral relationship in the world will significantly shape overall international relations for years to come. In this timely book, leading scholars of U.S.-China relations and China's foreign policy address recent changes in American assessments of China's capabilities and intentions and consider potential risks to international security, the significance of a shifting international distribution of power, problems of misperception, and the risk of conflicts. China's military modernization, its advancing technology, and its Belt and Road Initiative, as well as regional concerns, such as the South China Sea disputes, relations with Japan, and tensions on the Korean Peninsula, receive special focus. "

Book Synopsis India-China Maritime Competition by : Rajesh Basrur
Download or read book India-China Maritime Competition written by Rajesh Basrur and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-05-03 with total page 259 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This edited volume critically examines the concept of the “security dilemma” and applies it to India–China maritime competition. Though frequently employed in academic discussion and popular commentary on the Sino-Indian relationship, the term has rarely been critically analysed. The volume addresses the gap by examining whether the security dilemma is a useful concept in explaining the naval and foreign policy strategies of India and China. China’s Belt and Road Initiative and its expansive engagement in the Indian Ocean Region have resulted in India significantly scaling up investment in its navy, adding ships, naval aircraft and submarines. This volume investigates how the rivalry is playing out in different sub-regions of the Indian Ocean, and the responses of other powers, notably the United States and prominent Southeast Asian states. Their reactions to the Sino-Indian rivalry are an underexplored topic and the chapters in this book reveal how they selectively use that rivalry while trying to steer clear of making definite choices. The book concludes with recommendations on mitigating the security dilemma. This work will be of great interest to students of strategic studies, international relations, maritime security, and Asian politics.

Book Synopsis The Post-Colonial Security Dilemma by : Rebecca Strating
Download or read book The Post-Colonial Security Dilemma written by Rebecca Strating and published by ISEAS-Yusof Ishak Institute. This book was released on 2018-11-20 with total page 402 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the development of Timor-Leste’s foreign policy since achieving political independence in 2002. It considers the influence of Timor-Leste’s historical experiences with foreign intervention on how the small, new state has pursued security. The book argues that efforts to secure the Timorese state have been motivated by a desire to reduce foreign intervention and dependence upon other actors within the international community. Timor-Leste’s desire for ‘real’ independence — characterized by the absence of foreign interference — permeates all spheres of its international political, cultural and economic relations and foreign policy discourse. Securing the state entails projecting a legitimate identity in the international community to protect and guarantee political recognition of sovereign status, an imperative that gives rise to Timor-Leste’s aspirational foreign policy. The book examines Timor-Leste’s key bilateral and multilateral diplomatic relations, its engagement with the global normative order, and its place within the changing Asia-Pacific region.

Download or read book North Korean Foreign Policy written by Yongho Kim and published by Lexington Books. This book was released on 2010-12-16 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Threat does not inherently matter unless it is perceived, and, on the other hand, anything that is perceived as threat matters, whether or not the threat rings true. North Korean Foreign Policy: Security Dilemma and Succession, by Yongho Kim, posits security dilemma and political succession as the two main factors that North Korea perceives as threat, and that these external and domestic threats constitute Pyongyang's provocative foreign policy. North Korean Foreign Policy suggests that an effective policy for countries relating to North Korea, whether dovish or hawkish, should deal directly with Kim Jong-il's political survival, and not with Pyongyang's failed economy.
Book Synopsis Understanding China’s Behaviour in the South China Sea by : Klaus Heinrich Raditio
Download or read book Understanding China’s Behaviour in the South China Sea written by Klaus Heinrich Raditio and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-08-25 with total page 221 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book analyses the origins of security dilemmas in the South China Sea (SCS) and the significance of China’s actions in asserting its claim from the perspective of defensive realist theory. In its analysis, the book argues that security dilemmas in the SCS first arose between China and other SCS claimants, and then between China and the United States. Research in this book provides significant support to the defensive realist theory vis-à-vis offensive realism. It encourages adopting a reassurance policy to reach a peaceful resolution to the SCS disputes between China, the other claimants, and the United States. The book will be useful for policymakers, academics, researchers and students.
