Book excerpt: A doorway to the past reveals a warning for the future in this time-travel adventure by the author of Michael’s Wife Just released from prison after serving time for a false drug charge, Aletha Kingman decamps to Telluride, Colorado, for a fresh start. One day when she’s sketching an abandoned miner’s shack, she encounters a young girl, Callie, who’s been transported from the turn of the century. Aletha follows Callie back in time to the rough-and-tumble mining town where the impoverished girl faces a future of disrepute and her brother Bram is caught in the bloody conflict between hard-working miners and their bosses. Together with her newfound friend, the enigmatic Cree, Aletha is determined to use her foresight from the future to make a difference in the past. Suffused with the social and political history of the American West, The Threshold crosscuts between the disparate worlds of glitzy modern-day Telluride and its past incarnation as a gritty, turbulent mining town, brilliantly posing the question of whether we can—or should—alter the course of history.

Everything Prissie thought she knew is about to change ... again! “He was trembling, which frightened Prissie even more than the pitch black. Crouching down, she made herself as small as possible against the tunnel wall. From somewhere in the darkness ahead came a sour note, off-key and unpleasant. She held her breath, listening with all her might. A dull clink was followed by a crunching sound that reminded Prissie uneasily of a barn cat eating a mouse. She cupped her hand around her little passenger and curled more tightly, hiding her face on her knees as her heart sent up a silent plea for help.” -from The Hidden Deep Praise for The Blue Door A fantasy with a wholesome message and down-on-the-farm twist. -Kirkus

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hermann Beckh (1875-1937) was one of the co-founders of The Christian Community. A remarkable linguist and universal scholar, he mastered six European and six Oriental languages and published more than twenty works on the humanities, dealing with Christology, Cosmology and Musicology. Having first studied Law, he later channelled his extensive research of Hinduism and Buddhism into a renewal of sacramental Christianity. ‘Without the Professor’, wrote his colleague Rudolf Meyer, the beginnings of the new religious movement were ‘unthinkable’. Gundhild Kačer-Bock – daughter of Beckh’s priest-colleague and fellow author Emil Bock – creates a lively picture of a unique personality. Beginning with his birth in Nuremberg and education in Munich, she reviews Beckh’s manifold studies and writings, his meeting with Rudolf Steiner in 1911, the founding of the Movement for Religious Renewal in Stuttgart in 1922, and the seminal Christmas Conference in Dornach in 1923. Having known Beckh personally, she builds on her own memories as well as Beckh’s recorded memoirs, and utilizes newly-discovered letters and documents. This new edition contains Beckh’s fairy-tale ‘The Story of the Little Squirrel, the Moonlight Princess and the Little Rose’ (featuring colour illustrations by Tatjana Schellhase), with additional appreciations of the author and an illustrative plate section. ‘A University Professor, who had been a Judge and Orientalist, now became a priest with us. He actively took part in carrying the birth of the new ritual words; he was an expert in the mysteries of language… An abundance of books came into existence whose significance perhaps will only be properly appreciated in the future.’ – Emil Bock (1959)

Book excerpt: Following the success of The Wayfarer Redemption series, Sara Douglass brings us a beautifully crafted novel in Threshold, a standalone prequel to the Darkglass Mountain trilogy. Over the hot southern land of Ashdod looms the shadow of Threshold, a massive pyramid which the Magi of Ashdod are building to propel themselves into Infinity, a plane of existence that holds the promise of technological magics and supposedly unimaginable power. For decades, thousands of slaves have lost their lives in the construction of this edifice. Now that this construction is almost complete, the Magi need only to add the finishing touches, and they will let nothing stand in the way of achieving their desire. The Master of the Magi, a young and ambitious man, ready to do anything for power, sees the glassworker slave Tirzah as a plaything, a trifle to relieve the tensions of the day. He senses that under her placid façade Tirzah is hiding something, but try as he may to see beneath her surface, she remains an enigma. What he does not know is that her secret is the knowledge of forbidden magic. That she senses the inherent power in glass and can communicate with it-and that the glass in Threshold screams to her in pain. For it knows what neither Tirzah nor any of the Magi suspect. That something waits in Infinity, watching, biding its time, and when the final glass plate is laid and the capstone cemented in blood, it plans to use Threshold to step from Infinity into Ashdod... Suzanne Rannoch has tried to ignore rumors that her new husband, Malcolm, is also one of Tatiana's lovers. Blavatsky’s The Secret Doctrine is the foundational text for the dissemination of the esoteric tradition, as promulgated by the Masters of Wisdom for this new epoch. The Theosophical Society, the writings of Alice Bailey, Helena Roerich and other esotericists, are founded upon the basis of the advanced esoteric doctrines promulgated in that text. Here, for the first time, a proper exposition of the mode of the coding of the esoteric texts presented by the Masters is revealed. The object being to assist serious students of the esoteric doctrines to gain much deeper insights as to the nature of the hidden wisdom of the revelatory writings emanating from the Hierarchy of enlightened beings. This book consequently presupposes that the reader is familiar with the context of the writings of the above authors, and also my writings, because of the nature of the advanced esotericism that needs to be explicated. The focus of this analysis is upon the Stanzas of Dzyan (stanzas for meditation), the backbone of The Secret Doctrine. Those that take the time to properly study the texts will comprehend the vastness of the philosophy and awareness attained by enlightened beings, and so hopefully aspire to likewise gain enlightenment.

EUROCRI’PT ’89 was the seventh European conference and was held in Houthalen, Belgium on April 10-13, 1989. With close to 300 participants, it was perhaps the largest open conferencr on c:rypt, ogra.phy ever held. The field of cryptography is expanding not only because of the increased vulnerability of computer systems and networks to a11 increasing range of threats, but also because of t1ic ra.pid progress in cryptographic methods, that t,he readers can witness by reading the book. The present proceedings contain nearly all contributions which were presented including the talks at the rump session. The chapters correspond to the sessions at the conference. It wa5 the first time that a rump session was organized on a Eurocrypt conference. Sixteen impromptu talks were given, and the authors were invited to submit short abstracts of their presentations. Because of the special character of this session, the editors have taken the liberty to shorten some of these.

Book excerpt: 10 lectures, Vienna, June 1-11, 1922 (CW 83) This challenging set of lectures attempts to lift the veil from modern social and spiritual problems as experienced in the contrasts between East and West. By ascribing to human thinking only a shadowy, subjective validity, modern science tries to invalidate the very faculty that gives us our human dignity. At the same time, however, this "unreality" of thought images makes possible an inner freedom that scientific doctrine tends to deny in principle. The need arises from these contradictions to extend the limits of ordinary scientific thinking to new investigative faculties. In part one, "Anthroposophy and the Sciences," Rudolf Steiner esplains that this can be achieved in a healthy way through two kinds of meditative excercises, very different in character from yoga and asceticism and other older paths to higher knowledge. These disciplines lead to the discovery of a paradoxical truth: "If you would know yourself, look into the world. If you would know the world, look into your self." The spiritual-scientific philosophy thus presented provides a framework within which the second half of the book ("Anthroposophy and Sociology") considers how a healthy social life can be understood and shaped. Today the old social instincts of humanity have grown uncertain, and the rational intellect is proving unsuited to comprehend and foster a humane social life. While admitting that we are only beginning to discover the right relationship between individual and community, Steiner describes how a conscious spiritual life is able to give the same social certainties as did the earlier "instictive" life. He then explains how we might find a way from our highly developed sense of personal self into the worldwide social organism. This volume is a translation of Westliche und östliche Weltgegensätzlichkeit - Wege zu ihre Verständigung durch Anthroposophie.
