Download or read book The Dime Novel in Children's Literature written by Vicki Anderson and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2004-11-23 with total page 275 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With their rakish characters, sensationalist plots, improbable adventures and objectionable language (like swell and golly), dime novels in their heyday were widely considered a threat to the morals of impressionable youth. Roundly criticized by church leaders and educators of the time, these short, quick-moving, pocket-sized publications were also, inevitably, wildly popular with readers of all ages. This work looks at the evolution of the dime novel and at the authors, publishers, illustrators, and subject matter of the genre. Also discussed are related types of children's literature, such as story papers, chapbooks, broadsides, serial books, pulp magazines, comic books and today's paperback books. The author shows how these works reveal much about early American life and thought and how they reflect cultural nationalism through their ideological teachings in personal morality and ethics, humanitarian reform and political thought. Overall, this book is a thoughtful consideration of the dime novel's contribution to the genre of children's literature. Eight appendices provide a wealth of information, offering an annotated bibliography of dime novels and listing series books, story paper periodicals, characters, authors and their pseudonyms, and more. A reference section, index and illustrations are all included.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There comes a time in every child's life when they are expected to grow up and put away their childish fantasies and beliefs. By the time children enter formal school, they are discouraged from using their imagination or believing in magic and miracles. The fairytales they once believed in are replaced with math and science. No longer are they encouraged to believe in Santa Clause or the Easter bunny. In teaching children that imagination and fantasy are childish activities that we must outgrow, we have created a people who find it difficult to have the kind of faith that moves mountains and allows one to walk on water. We find it difficult to understand that our realities are created within our own imagination and attitudes. Cinderella's Secret takes a look at some of the valuable life lessons that are contained in simple childish fairytales in hopes of helping adults rekindle their passion for finding happily-ever-after.

Book Synopsis Plotted, Shot, and Painted by : J. Cheryl Exum
Download or read book Plotted, Shot, and Painted written by J. Cheryl Exum and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 1996-11-01 with total page 261 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: '... introduces the reader to an extraordinarily rich variety of critical experiences, which far transcends the limitations of conventional biblical scholarship' (Prooftexts). This provocative collection of essays begins where Exum's earlier literary-feminist study, Fragmented Women, left off: with the questioning of the androcentric bias of the biblical text and with the aim of subverting its patriarchal perspective. It moves on to stake out new territory for feminist biblical criticism by considering what happens to biblical women in popular culture, in art, and in film and by foregrounding questions about the ways gender interests affect interpretation and about the roles and responsibilities of commentators and readers. Six essays approach gender bias in representation and in interpretation from various angles: 'Bathsheba Plotted, Shot and Painted'; 'Michal at the Window, Michal in the Movies'; 'The Hand that Rocks the Cradle'; 'Prophetic Pornography'; 'Is This Naomi?'; and 'Why, Why, Why, Delilah?''
