Book Synopsis What the Best College Students Do by : Ken Bain
Download or read book What the Best College Students Do written by Ken Bain and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 2012-08-27 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The author of the best-selling What the Best College Teachers Do is back with more humane, doable, and inspiring help, this time for students who want to get the most out of college—and every other educational enterprise, too. The first thing they should do? Think beyond the transcript. The creative, successful people profiled in this book—college graduates who went on to change the world we live in—aimed higher than straight A’s. They used their four years to cultivate habits of thought that would enable them to grow and adapt throughout their lives. Combining academic research on learning and motivation with insights drawn from interviews with people who have won Nobel Prizes, Emmys, fame, or the admiration of people in their field, Ken Bain identifies the key attitudes that distinguished the best college students from their peers. These individuals started out with the belief that intelligence and ability are expandable, not fixed. This led them to make connections across disciplines, to develop a “meta-cognitive” understanding of their own ways of thinking, and to find ways to negotiate ill-structured problems rather than simply looking for right answers. Intrinsically motivated by their own sense of purpose, they were not demoralized by failure nor overly impressed with conventional notions of success. These movers and shakers didn’t achieve success by making success their goal. For them, it was a byproduct of following their intellectual curiosity, solving useful problems, and taking risks in order to learn and grow.

Book Synopsis Making College Work by : Harry J. Holzer
Download or read book Making College Work written by Harry J. Holzer and published by Brookings Institution Press. This book was released on 2017-08-15 with total page 163 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Practical solutions for improving higher education opportunities for disadvantaged students Too many disadvantaged college students in America do not complete their coursework or receive any college credential, while others earn degrees or certificates with little labor market value. Large numbers of these students also struggle to pay for college, and some incur debts that they have difficulty repaying. The authors provide a new review of the causes of these problems and offer promising policy solutions. The circumstances affecting disadvantaged students stem both from issues on the individual side, such as weak academic preparation and financial pressures, and from institutional failures. Low-income students disproportionately attend schools that are underfunded and have weak performance incentives, contributing to unsatisfactory outcomes for many students. Some solutions, including better financial aid or academic supports, target individual students. Other solutions, such as stronger linkages between coursework and the labor market and more structured paths through the curriculum, are aimed at institutional reforms. All students, and particularly those from disadvantaged backgrounds, also need better and varied pathways both to college and directly to the job market, beginning in high school. We can improve college outcomes, but must also acknowledge that we must make hard choices and face difficult tradeoffs in the process. While no single policy is guaranteed to greatly improve college and career outcomes, implementing a number of evidence-based policies and programs together has the potential to improve these outcomes substantially.
Book Synopsis Academic Success by : James Klemaszewski
Download or read book Academic Success written by James Klemaszewski and published by . This book was released on 2014-08-15 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book can be used outside of the classroom, or as an in-class textbook. As a textbook, it can stand alone (e.g., for a first-year experience course) or be used as a supplemental text for any course. The book is developed on the successes and experiences of the author and the people (students and professionals) who have contributed ideas and quotes. The book is divided into two parts, with fifteen chapters in each part, which is consistent with the length of traditional college semesters. One chapter from each part can be read each week over the course of a semester, or the book can be read sequentially. The assignments at the end of each chapter can be used in a variety of ways. They can serve as discussion prompts to introduce a topic, or as thought questions after a chapter has been read. The questions, as well as the content of each chapter, may be supplemented with your own experiences as well as those of the class. The material in the chapters can be presented by the course instructor, or can be used to allow students the opportunity to develop their presentation skills at times during the semester. Assignment questions can be answered verbally as part of class discussions, or, alternatively, answers can be written in order to assess and develop students written communication skills. However you use this book, as a teacher or a student, may your endeavors be successful "
