Book excerpt: Escape from the Everglades is the first book in the High Water series and blends contemporary mystery and suspense, dramatic situations, and high adventure that both boys and girls will love. A park ranger’s son hates the Everglades, and he thinks he’ll just die if he doesn't escape Southern Florida soon . . . and he’s right. After Parker Buckman is mauled and nearly killed by an alligator, he sees the glades as a place of death. All he wants to do is get out of the area, and he’s convinced he won’t truly be okay until he does. But he can’t leave until he finds a friend who goes missing. Escaping a bad situation isn’t a matter of a geographical change. Sometimes the best way to a brighter future is to face the darkness of your past.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Before 1947, when Marjory Stoneman Douglas named The Everglades a "river of grass," most people considered the area worthless. She brought the world's attention to the need to preserve The Everglades. In the Afterword, Michael Grunwald tells us what has happened to them since then. Grunwald points out that in 1947 the government was in the midst of establishing the Everglades National Park and turning loose the Army Corps of Engineers to control floods--both of which seemed like saviors for the Glades. But neither turned out to be the answer. Working from the research he did for his book, The Swamp, Grunwald offers an account of what went wrong and the many attempts to fix it, beginning with Save Our Everglades, which Douglas declared was "not nearly enough." Grunwald then lays out the intricacies (and inanities) of the more recent and ongoing CERP, the hugely expensive Comprehensive Everglades Restoration Plan.

Book excerpt: With his New York Times bestselling Doc Ford novels, author Randy Wayne White has been hailed as “the best new writer since Carl Hiaasen” (Denver Post). But decades ago, under the pen name Randy Striker, he was already delivering non-stop thrills with ex–Navy SEAL Dusky MacMorgan, who is about to go to war in a most lethal battleground. MacMorgan is living the good life on his stilt house a mile off Fleming Key. The skies are as blue as the sea, and there’s not a cloud in the sky. But there’s a storm coming in the form of the beautiful April Yarborough. She’s the daughter of an old pal, and she’s come to ask for the kind of help only MacMorgan can provide. The Yarboroughs have been in Florida longer than anyone can remember. Even today, many of them live off the grid, deep in the Everglades. Now, someone is waging a campaign of violence and destruction to drive them off their cherished swampland. And when MacMorgan dives into the fray, he finds that the deadliest danger in the swamp isn’t quicksand or ’gators, but big money—armed with some big guns.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many may not realize that the Everglades National Park is cut off from the water that gives it life. Its ecosystem begins well above the park's boundary, extending more than three hundred miles from the Kissimmee River (near Tampa and Orlando) southward through Florida Bay. It is the most endangered ecosystem in North America. The Book of the Everglades is a story of how much was changed when the vast river of grass was drained and converted to agriculture, its natural plumbing channeled so that nearby towns and farms would be protected from flood and saved in drought. It's a story of how one of North America's largest freshwater lakes ended up with a moat around it. A story of the sugar barons who were kicked out of Cuba and settled in what is now known as the Everglades Agricultural Area. A story of the largest subdivision in the world, platted on drained wetlands. A story of the soil that is no longer replenished and gives way at the rate of one foot every ten years. It is a story told by writers who know how to tell a story, and who convey the workings of the entire Everglades ecosystem and the impact of its inhabitants. ... Publisher description.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1915, the road system in south Florida had changed little since before the Civil War. Travelling from Miami to Ft. Myers meant going through Orlando, 250 miles north of Miami. Within 15 years, three highways were dredged and blasted through the Everglades: Ingraham Highway from Homestead, 25 miles south of Miami, to Flamingo on the tip of the peninsula; Tamiami Trail from Miami to Tampa; and Conners Highway from West Palm Beach to Okeechobee City. In 1916, Florida's road commission spent $967. In 1928 it spent $6.8 million. Tamiami Trail, originally projected to cost $500,000, eventually required $11 million. These roads were made possible by the 1920s Florida land boom, the advent of gasoline and diesel-powered equipment to replace animal and steam-powered implements, and the creation of a highway funding system based on fuel taxes. This book tells the story of the finance and technology of the first modern highways in the South.
