Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In more than nine decades of Girl Scouting, a vast popular and material culture has given rise to a wealth of Girl Scout history collections. More than an identification guide to uniforms, insignia, and other Girl Scout objects, this work also documents when changes occurred and why new items were introduced. Placing these objects in context, this essential guide provides a discerning look at the history and development of the Girl Scout Movement in the United States. Scholars and aficionados of Girl Scout history, costume history, women's studies, popular culture, and dress will welcome this indispensable and definitive resource. This new, expanded edition, with hundreds of illustrations, photographs, and tables, is indisputably the go-to source for information on all Girl Scout uniforms, insignia, awards, and handbooks, as well as dolls, postcards, posters, calendars, and more--from the founding of the Girl Scouts in 1912 through the present day. "An invaluable resource to Girl Scout councils managing a history collection. And, beyond that . . . an informative and intriguing glimpse . . . into the evolution of a Movement that . . . today is the world's preeminent organization dedicated solely to girls." --Cynthia B. Thompson, chair, National Board of Directors, and Kathy Cloninger, national chief executive officer, GSUSA "An indispensable reference for collectors; a fascinating resource for anyone interested in Girl Scouting, this comprehensive guide to Girl Scout memorabilia is firmly grounded in the history of the Girl Scouts of the United States. Mary Degenhardt and Judith Kirsch show us what Girl Scouts wore and read, and explain how changes in uniforms, insignia, and publications reflect the evolution of Girl Scout programs and the expansion of opportunities for American girls. Reading this book is like walking through a fine museum where material culture brings the past to life." --Anastatia Sims, author of Negotiating Boundaries of Southern Womanhood

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The astonishing first-person account of Mississippi pioneer woman struggling to survive, protect her family, and make a home in the early American South. Near the end of her life, Mary Mann Hamilton (1866 - c.1936) began recording her experiences in the backwoods of the Mississippi Delta. The result is this astonishing first-person account of a pioneer woman who braved grueling work, profound tragedy, and a pitiless wilderness (she and her family faced floods, tornadoes, fires, bears, panthers, and snakes) to protect her home in the early American South. An early draft of Trials of the Earth was submitted to a writers' competition sponsored by Little, Brown in 1933. It didn't win, and we almost lost the chance to bring this raw, vivid narrative to readers. Eighty-three years later, in partnership with Mary Mann Hamilton's descendants, we're proud to share this irreplaceable piece of American history. Written in spare, rich prose, Trials of the Earth is a precious record of one woman's extraordinary endurance and courage that will resonate with readers of history and fiction alike.

Book excerpt: The novel The Eclipse Blues is a tale of reverse power and fortune that comes about in the United States thirty years into the 21st Century as a result of massive global warming that's referred to by scientist as "the global warming mega-effect". As a result of the "global warming mega-effect" many diseases such as tuberculosis, the West Nile virus, and malaria are widely manifested. The most extensive debilitating disease is metastasis skin cancer that grows into a pandemic and greatly impacts and destroys the lives of people with pale and fair complexions - mostly Caucasians - who, as a result, become gravely ill and suffer a high mortality rate that subsequently makes them the minority in the United States to people of color who discriminate against them and prompt Caucasians to fight for their civil rights and equal justice much like people of color did during previous decades. Two influential personalities, Lutheran Minister Jerry Hines and newspaper owner Dewey Washington, come to the forefront in the story as protagonists who work diligently to end discrimination, inequality, and injustice toward pale-skinned citizens. These men put a lot on the line, including their own well-being, and in the case of Washington, the life of his daughter who is kidnapped by deranged David Butterfield, who is the diabolic leader of the Pale-skinned People Warriors Party that has declared vengeance and therewith violence against people of color.

Book excerpt: Phoebe Judson was a young bride in 1853 when she and her husband crossed the plains from Ohio to the Puget Sound area of Washington Territory. She was ninety-five when this book was first published in 1925. The years between were spent in “a pioneer’s search for an ideal home” and in living there, when it was finally found at the head of the Nooksack River, almost on the Canadian border. Phoebe Judson’s account of the journey west is based on daily diary entries detailing her fear, excitement, and exhaustion. At the end of the trail, the Judsons encountered hardships aplenty, causing them to abandon a farm and business in Olympia before their arrival in the Nooksack Valley. During the Indian Wars they holed up in a fort at Claquato. In time, Phoebe overcame her fear of the Indians, learned the Chinook language, and won their friendship. All this is told in vivid detail by a woman of great dignity and charm whom readers will long remember. Susan Armitage, professor of history at Washington State University, calls A Pioneer’s Search for an Ideal Home a “classic pioneering account,” important for its woman’s point of view.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the period when Russia was under Stalin, a young boy namedPavlik Morozov informed the OGPU (now called the KGB) that his fatherwas an enemy of the regime. As a result, Pavlik's father wasarrested and disappeared in a Soviet concentration camp. Enemies of theparty later killed the boy, whereupon people proclaimed him a hero.Informer 001 is the first independent study of the Morozovaffair. In book after book, author Druzhnikov discoveredinconsistencies on every fact relating to Morozov. As Druzhnikov piecedtogether the story about Morozov's life, death, and legacy, itbecame clear that the campaign to keep Morozov a hero was centrallydirected. Informer hero number 001, remained a fearful reminder to all;to those who inform, and those who become the victims of denunciations.
