Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Natural Method Readers: A Second Reader The mechanics of reading are not in evidence There is little or nothing to suggest that words have been strung together merely as school exercises. The progressive dificulties are well hidden from view, while being easily surmountable if the lessons are followed consecutively. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The American School Readers: Second Reader The Second Reader is Book Three of the American School Readers Series. It carries out the principles laid down in the First Reader. It is purely literary. That is, every selection is representative of standard children's literature. The Primer and the first part of the First Reader are devoted to teaching children to read their already familiar vocabulary. At the same time by slow degrees they are made acquainted with the form and appearance of simple folklore and its word. When this point has been reached, no "made up" lessons are used. The authors believe that the whole time given to reading books in school should be spent upon worthy literature, in cultivating taste for good reading. They follow this creed consistently throughout the series. This book especially makes much use of the "repetitional" story, in which words and phrased occur repeatedly. The more difficult words are given before the lessons in which they occur. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ‘Pen, Pencil, and Poison’ is one of Wilde’s most intriguing essays. Part biography, part social commentary, and part philosophical debate, he writes the biography of an art critic, who was also convicted of murder. However, in true Wildean style, there’s more to the essay than meets the eye. While documenting the life and crimes of Thomas Griffiths Wainwright, Wilde explores the ideas of dual identity, sin in the formation of the personality, and the relationship between crime and culture. ‘Pen, Pencil, and Poison’ is a fascinating insight into some of the conventions of the time. Oscar Wilde (1854 – 1900) was an Irish novelist, poet, playwright, and wit. He was an advocate of the Aesthetic movement, which extolled the virtues of art for the sake of art. During his career, Wilde wrote nine plays, including ‘The Importance of Being Earnest,’ ‘Lady Windermere’s Fan,’ and ‘A Woman of No Importance,’ many of which are still performed today. His only novel, ‘The Picture of Dorian Gray’ was adapted for the silver screen, in the film, ‘Dorian Gray,’ starring Ben Barnes and Colin Firth. In addition, Wilde wrote 43 poems, and seven essays. His life was the subject of a film, starring Stephen Fry.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Greek Prose Composition Part I contains, in graded lessons, the principal points of Greek syntax, the unusual and non-essential being purposely omitted. These lessons are designed for use at the beginning of the second year's study of Greek, thereby serving as a partial review of the first year's work and as an introduction to the composition work in connection with the reading of Xenophon's Anabasis. Part II contains short, simple English sentences, based on Books I - IV of the Anabasis. These should be used daily in connection with the reading of the text. Part III contains connected English prose, based on Books I - IV of the Anabasis. This is carefully graded, so that the stu dent who performs faithfully the work outlined here will be able to pass the entrance examination of any of the American colleges. The method of writing Greek at sight used in this book needs a word of explanation. It is the outgrowth of the author's personal experience in the classroom, and his belief that the best results can be obtained only by systematic practice in connection with the regular work.
