Download or read book Al Sieber written by Dan L. Thrapp and published by University of Oklahoma Press. This book was released on 2012-11-28 with total page 574 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: General George Crook planned and organized the principal Apache campaign in Arizona, and General Nelson Miles took credit for its successful conclusion on the 1800s, but the men who really won it were rugged frontiersmen such as Al Sieber, the renowned Chief of Scouts. Crook relied on Sieber to lead Apache scouts against renegade Apaches, who were adept at hiding and raiding from within their native terrain. In this carefully researched biography, Dan L. Thrapp gives extensive evidence for Sieber’s expertise, noting that the expeditions he accompanied were highly successful whereas those from which he was absent met with few triumphs. Perhaps the greatest tribute to his abilities was paid by a San Carlos Apache who, no matter how miserable life might become, because, he said, Sieber would find him even if he left no tracks.

Book Synopsis White Justice in Arizona by : Clare Vernon McKanna
Download or read book White Justice in Arizona written by Clare Vernon McKanna and published by Texas Tech University Press. This book was released on 2005 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "McKanna takes to task Arizona Territory's justice system during the 1880?90s." ?True West"A stark, sharply critical, and edifying look at the iniquities of false justice." ?Midwest Book ReviewThough trials in open court suggest impartiality, White Justice in Arizona reveals how, time and again, the judicial system of nineteenth-century Arizona denied Apaches justice. The Captain Jack, Gonshayee, Apache Kid, ?Carlisle Kid,? and Batdish murder cases offer a sad, compelling commentary on injustice for Native Americans. That these trials all ended in Apache convictions, Clare V. McKanna Jr. argues, proves the unfairness of applying the American legal tradition to a culture that lived by very different social and legal codes. Conquered and forced from their lands by white outsiders, Apaches found their customs and methods of maintaining social control dramatically at odds with a new and completely alien legal system, a system that would not bend to integrate Apache or any other Native American culture.Through case studies of these very different murder trials, White Justice in Arizona probes the federal and state governments? treatment of America?s indigenous populations and the cultural clashes that left justice the greatest casualty.?Clare V. McKanna Jr. analyzes the matrix of race, criminal law, and justice in nineteenth-century Arizona and finds fair trial for Indians absent. This is an important book advancing our understanding of race and justice in the American West by one of our most insightful historians.? ?Gordon Morris Bakken, editor of Racial Encounters in the Multi-Cultural West

Download or read book Globe written by Wilbur A. Haak and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2008 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: According to Arizona folklore, "Globe City" was named for an extremely large globe-shaped silver nugget found along Pinal Creek in the 1870s. The town site, nestled in the foothills of the Pinal Mountains, was laid out in 1876, and miners and prospectors soon flooded the camp, joining ranchers already in the area. In 1881, Globe was named the county seat of Gila County, allowing for the continued growth and development of mining, ranching, and commerce. Many Arizonans who helped shepherd the Territory of Arizona into statehood came from Globe, including the state's first governor, businessmen George W. P. Hunt. Today Globe is a thriving community of 7,500 residents who take pride in their town's unique historic legacy.
