Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Second Battalion Royal Dublin Fusiliers in the South African War: With a Description of the Operations in the Aden Hinterland The 2nd Battalion Royal Dublin Fusiliers is one of the oldest regiments in the service. It was raised in February and March, 1661, to form the garrison of Bombay, which had been ceded to the Crown as part of the dowry of the Infanta of Portugal, on her marriage with King Charles II. It then consisted of four companies, the establishment of each being one captain, one lieutenant, one ensign, two sergeants, three corporals, two drummers, and 100 privates, and arrived at Bombay on September 18th, 1662, under the command of Sir Abraham Shipman. Under various titles it took part in nearly all the continuous fighting of which the history of India of those days is principally composed, being generally known as the Bombay European Regiment, until in March, 1843, it was granted the title of 1st Bombay Fusiliers. In 1862 the regiment was transferred to the Crown, when the word 'Royal' was added to its title, and it became known as the 103rd Regiment, The Royal Bombay Fusiliers. In 1873 the regiment was linked to the Royal Madras Fusiliers, whose history up to that time had been very similar to its own. By General Order 41, of 1881, the titles of the two regiments underwent yet another change, when they became known by their present names, the 1st and 2nd Battalions Royal Dublin Fusiliers. The 2nd Battalion first left India for home service on January 2nd, 1871, when it embarked on H.M.S. Malabar, arriving at Portsmouth Harbour about 8 a.m. on February 4th, and was stationed at Parkhurst. Its home service lasted until 1884, when it embarked for Gibraltar. This book was released on 2014-03 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Royal Dublin Fusiliers (RDF) was formed in 1881, as a result of the Cardwell reforms, by the linking of the 102nd Royal Madras Fusiliers with the 103rd Royal Bombay Fusiliers, which became respectively the 1st and 2nd Battalions of the regiment. Both battalions traced their origins back to the Honourable British East India Company, the 2nd Battalion being descended from the Bombay Regiment, formed in 1661, the first of the Company's European regiments. When the South African War broke out in 1899 the battalion was already in the country, having arrived in Natal from India in 1897, and so it had had time to get acclimatised and learn the topography of that colony. It remained in South Africa till the end of January 1902 and took part in the actions at Talana Hill, Colenso, Venter's Spruit, Ladysmith, Hart's and Pieter' Hills and elsewhere. This book claims only to be a plain soldier's narrative of the part taken by 2nd RDF - the fighting, the long and weary marches across the Transvaal and the monotonous life of constant vigil in fort, blockhouse and on escort duty. The appendices contain, among extracts from Battalion Orders, letters, telegrams etc, a detailed breakdown of casualties and this will be of great interest to medallists. There is also a description of the armoured train in which Winston Churchill was a passenger as a war correspondent just before he was captured by the Boers. The long list of those who died from disease gives place and date of death as well as the cause of death, e.g. dysentry, enteric fever and, interestingly enough, one struck by lightning and one suicide. The long list of the wounded not only gives date and place where wounded but also in most cases details of the wound; (in every case bar two shell splinter casualties, the wounds were caused by gunshot, which is a truibute to the accurate Boer marksmanship). There are lists of missing, reported at various dates, including 43 missing following the attack on the armoured train.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One hundred years after the Boer War, the British continue to debate what went wrong, while the war has significant nationalist overtones in today's South Africa. This book examines changes in interpretations of the war and provides a bibliography of major sources on the Boer War, now sometimes called the South African War. The bibliography focuses on the military history, but also includes some historical accounts of the political debate. The first part of the book provides an extended historiographical essay, while part two provides an annotated bibliography of the titles discussed in part one. Historiographical questions concerning the Boer War are numerous. Discussions of military operations focus on the early use of modern weaponry and the effect of guerrilla tactics on a traditional force, while other historians debate the question of British military leadership and organization. Questions also revolve around British imperialism and the scramble for Africa. Frequently called the second war for freedom by South African authors, the war was the reason that South Africa, unlike other British colonies, gained independence without majority rule. This makes the war of continuing relevance to the turmoil in South Africa, the collapse of the minority government, and the continuing problems of the current government. This book will provide a useful tool for those wishing to research the war.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the second volume of a two-volume work entitled The British Army on Bloomsday. It contains detailed explanations of the military allusions in James Joyce’s groundbreaking novel, Ulysses, as well as an in-depth look at the two principal, fictional military characters: Major Brian Tweedy and his daughter, Marion (Molly Bloom). Also included are chapters on the minor military characters and personages that appear in the novel, the Royal Dublin Fusiliers (Tweedy’s old regiment), Gibraltar of the nineteenth century, and the British Army in Ireland on Bloomsday. The appendices contain period photographs of 1880s Gibraltar (where Molly Bloom spent her formative years) and barracks and other army facilities in Late-Victorian Dublin. While the first volume focuses on the British Army, this volume, The British Army in Ulysses, narrows in on the novel. The chapters on Molly Bloom and Major Tweedy present new findings that will likely provoke controversy among Joyceans. From the Introduction: James Joyce spent a good deal of his youth, and all his university years, in a British Army garrison city: Dublin. Throughout that period, 4,500 to 5,500 soldiers were quartered in that city of 250,000 residents. Barracks and former barracks were situated all over “dear, dirty Dublin” and probably one-in-eleven of the young men out in town during the evening and late afternoon was in uniform. The British Army was a major part of Dublin life and so it appears throughout Ulysses in characters, places, and references to wars and battles. Additionally, Joyce worked on Ulysses between 1912 and 1922. During that period, two wars were fought in the Balkans in 1913, and a "Great War" raged throughout Europe from 1914 through 1918. These conflicts, particularly the Great War, certainly influenced Joyce and his writing. As noted by Greg Winston in Joyce and Militarism, “it is not surprising that in Joyce's writings the martial element is frequent and ubiquitous.”

This new edition includes an enlarged addendum to that given in the 1988 reprint. It is, quite simply, indispensible.
