Download or read book Sustainable Land Management in the Tropics written by Fred Zaal and published by Ashgate Publishing, Ltd.. This book was released on 2012-11-28 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bringing together case studies from Kenya, Benin, Cameroon and the Philippines, this volume provides a multidisciplinary overview of the economics of natural resource management in Tropical regions, at household and village level. By comparing a wide array of climatic and economic conditions, it examines the effect of location and access to the market - as well as the importance of national policies - have on soil and water conservation. The book not only analyzes the benefits of soil and water conservation based on econometric studies, but also assesses the costs involved. In doing so it challenges commonly held assumptions about poorer community's ability to finance such measures.

Download or read book Arid and Semiarid Land Stewardship written by Peter F. Ffolliott and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page 84 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The International Arid Lands Consortium (IALC) was established in 1990 to promote research, education, and training activities related to the development, management, and restoration or reclamation of arid and semiarid lands worldwide. The IALC, a leading international organization, supports ecological sustainability and development of arid and semiarid lands. Building on a decade of experience, IALC continues to increase the knowledge-base for managers by funding research, development, and demonstration projects, and special initiatives. The results from the scientific and technical projects enhance management and stewardship of arid and semiarid ecosystems for sustainable use, while maintaining the integrity of the ecological processes. The publication presents a review of the accomplishments and contributions of IALC's science and technical programs through a synopsis of the projects and initiatives. We group the projects and initiatives into soil and water resources development and conservation, land use and reclamation, processes enhancing the management of ecological systems, and inventorying and measurements techniques and monitoring.

Book Synopsis Sustainable Land Management by : World Bank
Download or read book Sustainable Land Management written by World Bank and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2006 with total page 87 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Land is the integrating component of all livelihoods depending on farm, forest, rangeland, or water (rivers, lakes, coastal marine) habitats. Due to varying political, social, and economic factors, the heavy use of natural resources to supply a rapidly growing global population and economy has resulted in the unintended mismanagement and degradation of land and ecosystems. Sustainable Land Management provides strategic focus to the implementation of sustainable land management (SLM) components of the World Bank's development strategies. SLM is a knowledge-based procedure that integrates land, water, biodiversity, and environmental management to meet rising food and fiber demands while sustainaing livelihoods and the environment. This book, aimed at policy makers, project managers, and development organization, articulates priorities for investment in SLM and natural resource management and indentifies the policy, institutional, and incentive reform options that will accelerate the adoption of SLM productivity improvements and pro-poor growth.

Book Synopsis Land Management Strategies in the Humid and Subhumid Tropics and the Role of MAB Therein by : Frank B. Golley
Download or read book Land Management Strategies in the Humid and Subhumid Tropics and the Role of MAB Therein written by Frank B. Golley and published by . This book was released on 1981 with total page 92 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The humid and subhumid tropics face a series of environmental problems associated with population growth, demand for food, housing, and services, industrialization and modernization. The environmental sciences provide a theoretical framework within which to understand and to correct such problems. MAB has made progress during its first ten years of activity as an environmental science program, especially in the survey of knowledge, organization of a network of cooperators, and development of pilot research projects. However, contradictions and problems in MAB have also become apparent during this period. For example, it has seldom been possible to build effective research teams of natural and social scientists so that a holistic approach to problems can be made. It has also been difficult to reconcile the need for general theory applying to many situations and the local variation inherent in natural and cultural systems. Finally, MAB has had difficulty creating an environment where governments could interact effectively. As MAB grows into a mature operation it should reorganize itself to deal with these kinds of internal problems and enlarge further its perspective. UNESCO provides a unique setting for a program such as MAB: it is a challenge to utilize this setting effectively.
