Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The story of the destruction of Sodom, Gomorrah, and Jericho--three cities situated along a major fault line extending 1,100 kilometers from the Red Sea to Turkey--is the oldest such description in human history. In this book, noted geologists K.O. Emery and David Neev have revisited that story to shed light on what happened there some 4,350 years ago. With all the benefits of modern geological and forensic science techniques at their disposal, the authors explore an area where earthquakes, volcanic activity, variations in the Dead Sea's level, and oscillations between arid and wet climates have affected life there for over 10,000 years. In reviewing the geology, biblical paleogeography, and limnology of the region, the authors have produced fascinating insights into the tectonic and climatic changes that have occurred in the region over the last 6,000 years and how those changes have affected cultural life in the Middle East. The Destruction of Sodom, Gomorrah, and Jericho is the first book to combine modern science and biblical archaeology to produce an authoritative account of the of these three great cities. It will fascinate students and researchers in geology, geophysics, and archaeology alike.

Book excerpt: Armed with only six passages in the Bible—often known as the "Clobber Passages"—the conservative Christian position has been one that stands against the full inclusion of our LGBTQ siblings. UnClobber reexamines each of those frequently quoted passages of Scripture, alternating with author Colby Martin's own story of being fired from an evangelical megachurch when they discovered his stance on sexuality. UnClobber reexamines what the Bible says (and does not say) about homosexuality in such a way that sheds divine light on outdated and inaccurate assumptions and interpretations. This new edition equips study groups and congregations with questions for discussion and a sermon series guide for preachers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most evangelical Christians believe that those people who are not saved before they die will be punished in hell forever. But is this what the Bible truly teaches? Do Christians need to rethink their understanding of hell? In the late twentieth century, a growing number of evangelical theologians, biblical scholars, and philosophers began to reject the traditional doctrine of eternal conscious torment in hell in favor of a minority theological perspective called conditional immortality. This view contends that the unsaved are resurrected to face divine judgment, just as Christians have always believed, but due to the fact that immortality is only given to those who are in Christ, the unsaved do not exist forever in hell. Instead, they face the punishment of the "second death"--an end to their conscious existence. This volume brings together excerpts from a variety of well-respected evangelical thinkers, including John Stott, John Wenham, and E. Earl Ellis, as they articulate the biblical, theological, and philosophical arguments for conditionalism. These readings will give thoughtful Christians strong evidence that there are indeed compelling reasons for rethinking hell.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1947, a Bedouin shepherd literally stumbled upon a cave near the Dead Sea, a settlement now called Qumran, to the east of Jerusalem. This cave, along with the others located nearby, contained jars holding hundreds of scrolls and fragments of scrolls of texts both biblical and nonbiblical—in Hebrew, Aramaic, and Greek. The biblical scrolls would be the earliest evidence of the Hebrew Scriptures, or Old Testament, by hundreds of years; and the nonbiblical texts would shed dramatic light on one of the least-known periods of Jewish history—the Second Temple period. This find is, quite simply, the most important archaeological event in two thousand years of biblical studies. The scrolls provide information on nearly every aspect of biblical studies, including the Old Testament, text criticism, Second Temple Judaism, the New Testament, and Christian origins. It took more than fifty years for the scrolls to be completely and officially published, and there is no comparable brief, introductory resource. Core Biblical Studies fulfill the need for brief, substantive, yet highly accessible introductions to key subjects and themes in biblical studies. In the shifting tides of biblical interpretation, these books are designed to help students locate relevant meanings in conversation with the text. As a first step toward substantive and subsequent learning, the series draws on the best scholarship in order to provide foundational concepts and contextualized information on a broad scope of issues, methods, perspectives, and trends.

Book excerpt: This volume is a reformatted printing of the Ph.D. dissertation of Phillip James Silvia for Trinity Southwest University in Albuquerque, New Mexico. It is a scientific study of the occupation history of the Middle Ghor, the nearly circular plain that lies just north of the Dead Sea in the Great Rift Valley. This study documents the existence of a major urban center (Tall el-Hammam) from the Chalcolithic Period through Middle Bronze Age (roughly 4600 to 1650 BCE) and significant human presence distributed across multiple nearby sites that came to a sudden and violent end, leaving the area unoccupied for 600-700 years. Evidence is presented to support the author's hypotheses that the source of destruction was a meteoritic airburst event, and that the cause of the extended occupational hiatus was depletion of the topsoil and poisoning of the remaining subsoil with Dead Sea salts by the airburst. Although it was not the author's purpose in presenting this data to defend the Biblical story of the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah and the cities of the plain, the evidence, analyses and conclusions presented in this volume clearly support the claim of Dr. Steven Collins that Tall el-Hammam is Sodom.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Has Sodom been discovered? The Bible describes the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah in Genesis 19 in terms of fire and brimstone falling from heaven. But what actually happened to these cities? Where are they today? Did they survive the cataclysmic destruction? Two archaeological sites have recently been identified as Sodom, but which is the best candidate for the location of Sodom: Tall el-Hammâm, at the northern end of the Dead Sea in the Jordan Valley, or Bâb edh-Dhrâ, at the southern end of the Dead Sea in the Ghor? Trying to navigate the maze of arguments can be a daunting task. Graves provides a useful tool for reader in their quest for the location of this illusive biblical city. This work provides sixty-two helpful facts grouped together in methodological, hermeneutical, geographical, chronological, archaeological, cataclysmal, and geological chapters, which set the stage for further research and consideration.

Book excerpt: The 120 Days of Sodom is the Marquis de Sade's masterpiece. A still unsurpassed catalogue of sexual perversions and the first systematic exploration of the psychopathology of sex, it was written during Sade's lengthy imprisonment for sexual deviancy and blasphemy and then lost after the storming of the Bastille during the French Revolution in 1789. Later rediscovered, the manuscript remained unpublished until 1936 and is now introduced by Simone de Beauvoir's landmark essay, 'Must We Burn Sade?' Unique in its enduring capacity to shock and provoke, The 120 Days of Sodom must stand as one of the most controversial books ever written, and a fine example of the Libertine novel, a genre inspired by eroticism and anti-establishmentarianism, that effectively ended with the French Revolution.
